Installing Yamaha CommandLink Gauges with an NMEA Network

In this video, Eric shows you how to install these gauges in your boat, replacing the standard factory gauges. Instead of using a CommandLink network, we use a standard NMEA network with the "Golden Channels Better Connected Yamaha CommandLink Digital Gauge Set" to obtain engine data from our Yamaha Outboard.
There is also tips on how to get speed from your GPS or fish finder and how to make proper connections.
A major fishing advantage of these gauges is the ability to adjust the idle speed to increase or decrease the speed at which you troll. You should check that your model of engine has this ability prior to installation. These digital gauges allow you to adjust your trolling speed +/- 50 rpm at a time, to match the exact speed where the fish are hitting.
In addition to this feature, you can display instantaneous fuel consumption to allow you to optimize fuel consumption / speed while on plane. This feature will quickly pay for the upgrade for the gauges by increasing your fuel economy on the water. - Auta a dopravní prostředky

Nice video! I just purchased this 6Y8 gauge set, on a new motor 2013, it has a speed pickup tube that you have the option of adding a pressure sensor that can be plugged to the harness for the 6Y8 electronic speedometer.

Something else we do for many of our customers installing the Yamaha Speedos, 6Y8 or 6Y5, is to help them wire from the GPS signal on their MFD/Fish Finder. Many fish finder models have the wiring readily available, plus we can connect their VHF radio at the same time, if they have one. Then, their speedo displays GPS speed.
I currently have 6y8 gauges that I purchased used for my 2014 115hp the gauges came with a orange wire that clips on to motor and has a black and yellow wire bullet connector then as it goes down it hooks up to tac gauge and speed gauge and now on the second connection on fuel gauge I have one white - and blue + 1pink 1pink with black and 2 black not sure what to do here I guess I hook up the black and yellow to ignition bullet connections and the second connection with all the pink and black wires I’m assuming I don’t need unless I have a fuel tank connection . And I’m assuming if I have the harness hooked up to the motor I can’t hook up the Nema connection from motor because the harness for the gauge is currently in use so it’s one or the other
Good video, I'm about to install an nmea2000 network from my lowrence elite fs7 to Yamaha 2021 50hp outboard. I don't have any current gauges as I'm converting an open boat to side console. What do I need to be able to show speed, trim? I have an nmea starter kit and Yamaha cable so far. only disappointment so far is I won't be able to see any warning lights.

Adding NMEA give you the following data on the fishfinder: fuel consumption rate, oil pressure, engine temperature, RPM, alternator voltage, fuel pressure, water pressure, and engine hours as long as the Fish Finder chooses to display them.

There is a wrinkle with a few fish finders on the market regarding GPS speed to the speedo (yours included) where there is only NMEA 2000 connections, and the Yamaha Speedo requires the older NMEA 0183 standard. To fix this, our engineering group created a very specific cable that is a converter between the two networking standards:

This third cable is required to get speed from the GPS in the fish finder to display on the Yamaha Speedo. This is specifically for the 6 pin connector only on the Yamaha Speedo.

@@bgun326 Absolutely. That is what the list of cables I gave you does. I assumed there was a speedo, too. You don't need CommandLink at all. My boat (the one in the video) does not have any CommandLink components. We do it all with our cables. Plus, you can add other components later, like an additional fish finder, etc.
I have been stumped trying to get my Garmin Echomap to read my 2011 Yamaha 150. I have the Command link hub and have purchased wire to go from the hub to the Garmin N2K input. However the only thing I can read is the engine hours. It does read fuel remaining since I listed the tank size onto chart plotter. But I do not get any other engine info.... I can not seem to find any reference for Command link hub to N2K... What I have read is the hub is just Yamaha's N2K solution with their connectors, but it doesn't seem to work with the cable connected to the Chartplotter... Any ideas?
Curtis, is your CommandLink hub in the stern of your boat, or the helm? Also, do you have the Yamaha 6Y8 series Tach (in this video) in your boat?

You are correct that CommandLink is electrically identical to NMEA2000. However, power distribution rules in the cable systems themselves and if you are running backbone or spur connections, plus proper termination design is still required.
Does the fuel usage guage give a proxy measurement based on speed? Or does the engine have a built it flow meter?
Mike, that is an excellent question and this needs to be clear to anyone installing the Yamaha 6Y8 Speedometer. Speed comes into this speedometer on NMEA 0183 signals on a second cable (goldenchannels.com/product/yamaha-6y8-8356n-01-00-equiv/) which also provides the analog fuel level signals to the speedo. Most fish finders with NMEA 2000 also provide a NMEA 0183 output, except the Raymarine Element. We're more than happy to help you determine how to hook up your fish finder to provide speed prior to you ordering.
It is likely based on intake vacuum pressure like most cars, they know the fuel air mixture so they are pretty accurate.

Will 6y8-0e83r-81-00 work on a 2020 VMAX SHO 200hp? It’s going on a StarCraft pontoon? I just don’t know what all I will need.
Justin, this part number is a kit that assumes you already have a CommandLink hub at the back of your boat. Is this the case?
A much more cost effective measure is to just go NMEA everywhere. We also need to talk about how you will get speed. Do you have a chart or a fish finder now?
@@GoldenChannels I don’t have the hub. I have a Humminbird Helix 5 CHIRP DI G2 NAV+ GPS Fish Finder installed but nothing hooked up to the engine. I’m trying to get something to display the engine hours. I’ve taken it to several boat dealers and they act clueless.
@@justinabbott1155 The Helix 5 unfortunately is not capable of NMEA. You need at least a 7" version. If you install the 6Y8 Tach, you will see engine hours on the Yamaha Tach. Here is what you need to order:

@@justinabbott1155 The Helix Series is very specific about not only the G7 series, but also the version of the G7 you are after. Any model other than the G7-G4N specifically, can be NMEA connected, but the cost for Humminbirds cables is ridiculous. Is the Helix G4N an option for you? @@farkasrado First, you can't damage anything using the wrong connection or polarity.
From your GPS, you need the Transmit output (Tx) Colors of these vary between different manufacturers, but should be listed in the fish finder manual.
On the Yamaha speedo cable you need blue and white, which are the longer pair in the cable bundle.
You should connect GPS Tx + to Yamaha + and GPS Tx - to Yamaha -.
You will know your connection is correct if you see the icon "GPS" shown on the Speedometer with the fish finder GPS locked on to satellites, and knowing it's position. You will not see 0 displayed as a speed.

How to calibrate a new fuel level gauge?
Hi Dêmius. The Yamaha digital speedo only displays 7 different levels, so it is not very high resolution. The only adjustment or setting for the speedometer is to set the type of sending unit that is in the fuel tank.
Many fish finders or MFDs have better fuel features and displays based on using the fuel flow and settings for fuel tank size to determine things like distance to empty, etc.

My yamaha 60hp is not showing the tring angle on the display
There is a single wire that needs to be connected in the Outboard to "route" the trim to the digital display. If you have a separate trim gauge on your dash, it will stop working and you will only get trim on your new 6Y8 gauge. Can you use these digital gagues with a 2002 Yamaha 2 stroke engine?
Pablo, it is unlikely there is a connection on that year of two stroke, but if you let me know the HP, I can do further research for you.

It looks like only the larger 2 strokes in 2003 were given the HPDI system. I'm afraid this cable won't help you.

@@GoldenChannels I recently bought a bay boat and the onboard meters the glass is cracked from the sun and it seems like the gas unit isn’t measuring correctly or is improperly set. I have Humminbird units networked with the one boat network onboard and if I can get the sending unit to go NMeA2k then I can see all my info on the displays instead of the gauges.
