- As I mostly work alone I wanted to find a good, safe way to install the subframe single handed. This little fixture that I made for the Trolley jack made all the difference. It enable a controlled lift and the ability to guide the frame home without the worry of it falling.
Not only are you a very capable mechanic and restorer, but you also a genuine inventor/ problem solver of the highest degree.
To also explain and film it all in a very calm methodic way says a lot of your caliber .
Cheers mate👍
Thank you for your very nice comments. I actually find filming helpful. Because I want to explain as clearly as possible each step, it helps me plan my approach to various problems that come up. It does slow the process sometimes, but I think that can be beneficial.
Thank again. Cheers John.
My pleasure entirely John👍@@mercedesmaintenance.6339
Hi John, great video series. I'm in the middle of replacing king pins and and bushings. Your videos are priceless as how to instructions
Thank you so much. Glad they of some help. I'm still working on getting that 4.5 bodywork done, can't wait to see how the front end feels now:) Cheers John.
Well, as we have discussed already 😂 your patience is commendable ………but your ingenuity in making “bibs and bobs” as you would say also deserves top marks. I think it must all come from being in the furniture making business. Not only did you need the capability to make the bracket for the trolly jack but you first needed to have the brains to figure out if you could actually use the trolly jack on your own. I wonder how often you have been tempted to yell out for your wife to come out and help you by being that other pair of hands you need for a few seconds to be on the other end of something. Congratulations on finally getting that frame installed.
I do call for the Wife on Occasion, but its normally to put the Kettle on. 😄 Thank you for all your kind words. Nearly done with this project:) Cheers John 🍻
Always with new ideas to do the job. It comes to me at just the right time because I cracked the aluminum oil pan in my 3.5 and I will have to do the same job by myself. Thanks for all the tips!!!
Sorry to hear about the Oil Pan. Are you going to be able to repair it? Or look for a replacement? Happy to hear the videos may help. Cheers John.
I will try reaping it. It is a small crack. Thanks
Hi John! Congrats. Very well done (your way😊). Though I am not such a fan of all the new medias available I am more than surprised how many follwers you got during your more than welcome videos. Respect. I wish you even more attention whilst showing how interesting our hobby is (around the world). TOP!
Thank you Oliver!! Really appreciate your comments. It is certainly a fun hobby. I hope everything is going well with you. All the best Cheers John.
Well done John. I've been loving following this. Everything seems fine subframe wise on my 108 at the moment (famous last words!) but I am sure this will all be very useful to me at some point. All the best, from "the homeland" 🤗
Thank you Richard! I just subscribed to you. That's a very nice collection you have there. Where are you in the UK? Hope the Old w108 is running well. Cheers from California. John.
@@mercedesmaintenance.6339 w108 is running great thanks. Good old German engineering unlike the British stuff I have 🤣 Based in Essex. Now you’ve subscribed I’ll have to start thinking about doing some actual videos! 😊
Well done! I can't help but wonder how many cuss words came out during
all of this, fun or not. I am definitely looking forward to seeing you fix the
fender. I still find it hard to believe the person hit you and ran.
Not to many cuss words. A few cups of tea though:) Yes, bodywork up next. Should be fun. I'm doing the hood and cowl too so it matches the fenders. Eventually the whole car will need doing. But that's going to have to wait. I'm itching to get back to the 6.3 project. Cheers John 🍻
congratulations!
Thank you! I'm happy it's finally in. Cheers John.
Nice work! When I rebuilt my subframe, I only installed the subframe itself and the upper control arms and bolted all other parts back on afterwards. I nowadays try to avoid working with heavy sub assemblies. 😊 But both ways work fine. A comment about the PS pump; the internals can be reassembled in multiple different ways, most of which negate the function of the pump. Unless you are confident in your abilities, I recommend testing the pump before reinstalling it at the car, simply install the reservoir, fill it with some ATV and use an impact to turn the pump - oil should “shoot” out of the high pressure outlet. If it doesn’t, the pump was assembled incorrectly (ask me how I know :-)). One last question: I didn’t see how you suspended the engine (no engine bar) - with the jacks underneath?
It is actually in now. I'm pretty confident on the pump. I promise if I have problems I'll let you know. After I clean the mess up:) I held the engine up by means of two jack stands and a steel bridge with wood on top to protect the pan. They were set far enough apart so I can wheel the jack in between.
All the best Cheers John.
Hi John, love your attention to detail and quality! I started working on and admiring Benz's in 1971 when my dad bought a 280SE. Now I live in Uganda and I have a friend here who is trying to restore an '84 230 CE that his dad bought in Dallas as a gray market car in '85 or '86. Most of our parts supplies here are exhausted so he asked me to inquire about where he can find stuff in the states. He is coming there on a visit in a few weeks. Can you share some good sources for used parts who deal reputably? Thanks John :)! Blessings, Philip
Hi Phillip. Thank you for your comments. Glad you're enjoying the channel. As far as parts, do you know where and how long he'll be here? Also what kind of things is he looking for? Have him join our Mercedes maintenance group on facebook and post there a list of what he needs.

I have a few friends there that maybe able to help him. All the best cheers John.
Thanks John :)! He will be in the LA area for a few days and then Chicago. He said he will be in Chicago a few weeks. He needs hardware for the sunroof. He said he wants to buy an entire sunroof. He needs floor/rocker panel sections if possible - lots of rust damage. 123 chassis. All the best from Uganda :)! Phil
