  • The NTSB will likely board the cargo ship for the first time today and interview crew and really begin an intense investigation into the cause of the horrific collapse of the Key Bridge in Baltimore. Maritime attorney Liindsey Brock, who represented Florida when a ship hit the Mathews Bridge in 2013, explains what's next in the investigation.

Seems steering gear failure when emergency power came on, resuming power supply to the steering , in the meantime dropped the port anchor to slow down the momentum that was at about 8 to 9 knots & gave a stern thrust on the engines for the reason of the smoke , causing the ship Canting/swing to St bd /right to the Bridge pillar , so tried to use the electrical driven forward bow thruster to correct it , It should be noted that whith the ship making a forward headway, using neither the stern movement nor bow thrust would have any effect , That seems to have been the mistake,
It should be noted that according to international maritime law the resposibility rests on the Captain & not the piliot who is only to assist the Captain , in fact as soon as the pilot boards the vessel he takes an indemnity, signed by the Captain,

Not so sure about the Dames Point Bridge. Yes, the southern pillar seems to be in shallow enough water that a ship couldn't get to it - and the northern pillar has two big dolphins. What's next? My guess would be that there will be several months of pissing and moaning about who's at fault and who gets blamed which are often not the same entity. Once that is determined we'll get into the who pays phase of the project. Once that's determined we can spend all the money on environmental studies and feasibility evaluations to determine if it's actually possible to have a bridge there at all. IF a new bridge is actually built I'd bet it's at least 5 years out and will be at least double the original cost estimate and will take at least twice as long to be completed as the original schedule. This will be a financial wind fall for some folks and a financial disaster for many more.

They are certainly more of an expert than you. It wasn't a barge - it was a container ship. Also, ships that size don't accelerate that you would be able to distinguish - it takes a long time to either speed up or slow down because they are so heavy. It was being navigated by a local harbour pilot who gives navigational orders to the helmsman. The captain is on the bridge and can override the pilot if he thinks a navigational order is not correct. There are probably others on the bridge, too. Plus personnel in the engine room who would be involved in any orders relating to engine power.
