To prevent anyone from mislabelling the DLC practices shown in the franchise as delibaretely malicious, here is a video analysing what the additional content includes, why people are angered by it and what we can do to avoid similar complications down the line. Support the games, not the industry-mandated practices. This goes for all of our favourite franchises. Thank you for your time.
    Cheers!

Please watch the video to its conclusion. This is not a critique of Ishin nor its creators. This is a critique of DLC practices that are forced onto everyone in the industry and what we can all learn from it. The DLC here has many missteps that I wish won't be repeated (or worsen) with new releases.
That being said, please keep the discussions in the comments civil.
And yes, I still think this is a game genuinely worth your time, but more on that when I make the full review.
    Thank you.

What I'm not a fan of is all the customization being locked behind DLC. In other yakuza games, once you finish the story, you unlock several bonus outfits. In here, you can only switch between the normal outfit and the haori. You don't even unlock the black outfit Ryoma wore in chapter 1. If you want way more options, you gotta get the DLC. I mean, come on now.

The difficulty one... is in fact an issue. It kinda reminds me of the Japanese dub DLC from Lightning Returns, where they charged you extra for the Japanese voices because... well, because, eh... Why did they charge you, again? It didn't cost 'em a single extra cent.
This is similar. The way they programme the Yakuza games, it's not like they put a ton of money into crafting the perfect difficulty mod. It's pretty ridiculous to make people pay for that.

I really appreciate your passion on this and admire your optimism. You mentioned that you studied economics and I suspect that this model exists because the market can (sadly or fortunately, depending on your perspective) support it. That said, shoehorning gacha mechanics into story driven games always feels gross. It's yet another in a long line of examples of how "late stage capitalism" or whatever you want to call it is more concerned with tricking people into spending money than providing something cool, innovative, and of value to consumers. The lust for money has ruined many creative endeavors in the past, but I will carry your optimism that the powers at Sega will realize that optimizing art for profit is a short term, culturally shallow strategy. As much as I love RGG I won't support the art anymore if it gets too exploitative.

great video, i never understood why people were so pissed off about Ishin's DLC.
id say having to pay for Ishin difficulty does suck, but the way they handled the other DLC is great. Cosmetics really dont matter, it's not really extra content, and the total being only around 13 bucks is nice, and it gets you a lot, especially compared to some other companies and their DLC.
Stop supporting companies like Activision with their horrible battle passes, overpriced cosmetics and games fully built to keep people playing and nothing else (game literally fucks with your stats to make the game "fair to everyone" so bad players dont get frustrated and leave. it's a massive, frustrating rabbit hole).
Start supporting studios like RGGS who make their DLC affordable and not necessary to buy for the full experience, and who are genuinely passionate about creating art.
25 dollars in Call of Duty gets you a single pretty mediocre skin with maybe a useless gun and an account emblem.
5 dollars in Ishin gets you 16 alright to amazing looking cosmetics for not only the protagonist but tons of NPCs too, and an entire difficulty option (selling a difficulty may be bad but 5 bucks for all that is a steal).
RGGS is doing great. Huge respect to them.

big agree for the most part, especially with how often i see RGG games on sale (at least on playstation store) so you can probably get the digital deluxe for pretty cheap in just a couple months, only thing is, i heard for some reason you can't claim the consumable DLCs again on other save files for some reason even though you could in every other game, so that's a pretty lame and unnecessary change
other than that though, yeah it definitely could be worse, i just hope us buying this stuff doesn't convince them to cut more stuff for "DLC" in something like a kenzan remake and charge even more, that's when it'll be really out of hand and i'll be very sad if RGG ever gets to that point

This whole process of the DLC being usable only once is just baffling, really. Personally my issues with Ishin Kiwami more lie with it's gameplay changes, even if you don't use the cards, the game has been fundamentally changed to support them. And I don't care much for said changes, making bosses less aggressive and having them stagger less, for example. As well as the giant enemies, my vote for worst enemy type in the series, somehow outpacing those obnoxious grabbers in Kenzan.

I did get all DLC since I bought the Digital Deluxe Edition, but I believe you are absolutely right that the best way to support the franchise is to show support for the games, and not for the DLC. I always knew about the Majima saga in kiwami 2, and after I installed kiwami, I was so ready to go buy the Majima saga thinking it was a DLC. But honestly, I was absolutely surprised you unlock it for free while playing the main story. Also Majima using the Legend style throughout the game made it so easy to make money from beating up gangs, and you can send money to kiryu from Majima, which made getting money so easy also for the main story. So it’s absolutely baffling that in ishin you can’t even unlock an outfits (which was in the main story) unless you buy a DLC. But I absolutely don’t blame RGG for this change, the industry keeps putting profits before the experience, and RGG had given us so much experience for free and it’s time them to make the profit to keep up with the industry.

Now, as someone who has little to no knowledge in economics but is extremely pessimistic, isn't it also possible that investors decide that videogames aren't worth it when they're not raking in money hand over fist, and investing into videogames slowly starts declining and eventually stops?

I think everybody would have been fine with a regular port of the game. I don't believe RGG Studio will permanently switch to Unreal Engine, especially considering that the Dragon Engine is still fairly new, but I'm certain they used UE for this game because it was easier for them to repackage assets from the original into this engine. I would say that it is malicious. How do I know it's malicious? They made microtransactions, put them as DLCs and didn't inform the consumer. Then they placed them as a value add (Aka justifying the price of the Deluxe edition) in the Deluxe edition, again without telling the consumer. It's one thing to strategize ways to monetize and implement it. It's another to not inform consumers so they can make informed decisions on purchases. Add that on top of all the other DLC controversies surrounding Ishin and at a certain point there's no benefit of the doubt to give them. There are just too many different controversies to look at.

If it's a budget issue why did they cast new roles instead of reusing the old ones?

Those who control the market are always responsible for the negative outcomes of it, not the consumer. A live service provider giving consumers an irresistable deal which undercuts swathes of the competition makes them responsible.
We aren't the ones responsible for the thousands of tons of fishing nets left out in the ocean simply because we eat fish, those who failed to do their duty and succumbed to greed and neglected their responsibility are the ones who hold the fault.
We don't control the capital, we have very little slices of money and we have to make it work how we can. The system is designed that way specifically SO they can make you buy the cheaper product which was made in the more devious, hand-over-fist and profitable way.

You use games launching on game pass as a negative example leading to the DLC practices seen here, but then use two examples of games that have not launched on game pass and isn't on game pass (Ishin) and a game that has never been on game pass (Cyberpunk 2077).

Blaming dlc trends on suscription services is disingenuous taking into account this kind of dlc has been around way years before the rising of that kind of services.

I mean. No one forcing you to pay. Its a non issue really. Yall too entitled really. Bonus OP gear that makes game easier, or cosmetic skins, is optional. You dont need it to enjoy the game. Cant complain coz some people willing to pay extra to play easier or look different.

I don't really think your worst case scenario future of all games being glorified gambling sims will happen, especially since indie games are a section of the industry. And even if it does, there are more old games worth playing (and emulating) than I can finish in my lifetime.

This is a very naïve way to look at this. SEGA want more money, they aren't being forced to be predatory to stay in business.
LaD could be a bigger series than Call of Duty and they would still be pushing dlc and microtransactions

Avoiding the micro transactions, even collectively, doesn't result in better games. For starters, the whale will still support them. "Vote with your dollar" is the old saying, but that just means people with more dollars have more voting power. And if they don't sell, rather than publishers giving in and not having them later, we'll just not get games at all, which I'm fine with when this is the future they are pushing. This is how capitalism has ruined gaming.
