I think a similarly good essay could be made on Bart and Marge. Absolutely everyone in his life seems to think he’s a bad person and will amount to nothing: his teachers, for a larger part his sister and father, even his friends, but not Marge
Yeah Bro, it's crazy how loyal Marge is both to Homer and Bart.
Although he kinda does from the picture a day thing.

Bart is at least personally for me, one of the most misunderstood Simpsons characters.
1. He has major learning and behavioural difficulties which make him more likely to misbehave, fall behind in class as well as Make it harder for him to succeed at most things in life.
2. Bart began school by discovering his peers enjoyed his antics and loved the attention and popularity it gave him. Why should he behave well when misbehaving made him famous.
3. Bart does try to do the right thing in episodes like Bart sells his soul, the problem come about from a misunderstanding, whereas other Simpsons family dilemmas usually come about from multiple people being involved. He is pinned as a devil child or is a usual suspect. Mainly by his antithesis Principal Skinner.
4. Bart has to depend on his antics and misbehaviour to get attention at home. It’s become his personality. Episodes were he may become a nerd, go to a different school. His personality and thus overall happiness decreases.
Look at almost any future episode, any episode where part becomes famous, part of a team or club and you see his long list of failure only grows.
I mainly made this just so I could talk about one of my favourite episodes not just of the Simpsons but probably all of media.
Bart gets an F.
I felt this episode. Everything that happened to Bart, hit me like a truck. When Bart starts falling behind and is faced with repeating the year, I knew his desperation. It had happened to me. His teachers saying that would be the day sarcastically. His parents while supportive, couldn’t fully understand. After all they can’t just fix the problem.
His need to work and catch up forces his popularity to decline and he just becomes a normal student with Martin replacing his former role.
Bart trying and failing to resist procrastination and his lack of attention skills. Even resorting to isolation, hitting himself and even missing out on social activities and a snow day in July for crying out load.
Not to excel but just to pass. To get the bear minimum.
Bart tries and tries but he fails. He’s so broken and exhausted he just cries. He of course passes due to extra knowledge and his test is hung over Lisa’s A +’s to everyone’s happiness and pride, Bart even thanks God he passed.
It’s quite obvious by now that I identify with Bart. Less so as a troublemaker, not until I was 17 anyway. But a struggling boy who really just needed help and self confidence. Even at university I have struggled. But I believe I still know that boy, whenever I see this episode I watch it all the way through. I start to remember school days, reading my texts books in the forest trying to concentrate without my mind wondering, staying inside during sunny days after neglecting studying for so long and years of bad luck and despair that I had long forgotten come flooding back.
This is the episode that beat captures Bart. The real Bart Simpson. Not the misbehaving child. Not the tear away. The El Barto or Bartman.
Watch the episode and you just might understand why Bart Simpson is Bart Simpson.

This was alot more warm-hearted then I expected, paired with some of the saddest Simpsons it really was the most wholesome thing I've seen in weeks

Now juxtapose this with the sheer toxicity of Homer and Bart's relationship and you've got a formula for a very real family dynamic, and the answer to the question "how did The Simpsons touch so many people and last so long?"

Spending 11 hour days in the writers room for two weeks to write one episode, not just jerking it out.
There's a lot of heart and love between Homer and Bart as well, it's just different from Homer and Lisa.
Homer and Bart have a similar humour that he neither shares with Marge or Lisa. Bart would feel truly isolated growing up without Homer.
I always thought Lisa and Homer had a very unique bond and their father and daughter relationship was so sweet even though they are so different from each other. However I never heard anyone express how perfect this duo is and I haven't heard anyone analyze their relationship before. Thank you for putting words to my thoughts.
I have been surprised that they never examined where Lisa got her musical talents from. (unless they did it in a recent season, as I have stopped watching a few years back.) Homer repeatedly shows his musical ability, singing, piano, guitar, etc. This would make an excellent episode that would bring the two together over a common interest.
Homers mom can play guitar and sing. Homer was also in a barbershop quartet. There’s also the piano in the house.
@@lh9591 I meant they never had an episode where Lisa feels she has nothing in common with Homer, which then centers around their love for music. There are a ton of episodes where Lisa can't connect with her father, i am just surprised no episode has examined it further.

That episode always struck a cord with me. Sometimes your best won't get stuff done. That's a bitter pill to swallow
I think it's a really interesting jump as a S2 premiere. The show was really finding its voice at the backend of Series 1 (excluding Some Enchanted Evening which was a holdover first episode due to production errors) with shows like 'Crepes of Wrath', 'Krusty Gets Busted' and 'Life on the Fast Lane' but I think the start of Series 2 was so confident in comparison to the series.
The jokes are notable upped in quantity and I always remember the moment Lisa scolds Bart for contemplating throwing away his chance to study. It's very 'SERIES 2' in that it's very realistic and grounded but I don't think people give it enough credit for how much more confident an episode it was.
Oh yeah, there was an F bomb on The Simpsons.
That one rlly made me sad. I can understand and retain information if I want to but it made me sad to think how many students do their best and study a lot but still have trouble understanding or retaining the information. It must be so frustrating since many of them feel ashamed of it
Yeah that episode really struck a cord with me personally. Back in elementary and half of highschool I didn’t quite figure out my study strategy, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to study like the average person and get a good grade, I had to get a little more creative and extremely repetitive with it. I eventually fully figured out my routine in university and now I don’t have much problems.... I will still never get math though, that’s just the one thing I could never get, I’d stay up studying till 2am for days and I would still get at most a C. But at least I don’t need it for the career I’m choosing.

If only the Simpsons maintained its quality throughout the years, then we may have been able to see their relationship developed even more

Their relationship dynamic is directly opposite to that of Peter and Meg from Family Guy
Thinking of Meg and Family Guy, there's *one* episode where they're friends, where Peter realizes that his daughter is cool, and at the end he mocks her but then peeks out the door to wink at her to let her know that now she's in on the joke that he hates her, when in reality he loves her.
It's sweet, but there's been nothing to repeat that or comment on it afterwards, not in all the years that the show's been running. Every time I see a clip of FG on youtube where Meg is in it at all, I'm lowkey readying myself for the obvious torment that is gonna follow. I feel bad because I am all for comedy and running gags, but Meg being absolutely hated by her entire family no longer feels like something funny, if it ever did. instead it feels like the sickest, nastiest voyeurism.
There actually is one other newer age episode where Peter genuinely is just nice to Meg. It was one where she almost drowns.
I think we could talk at length about how crappy Peter is to Meg as a father. But you got it when you said that watching episodes nowadays whenever she comes on screen I sorta flinch just waiting for some bad shit to happen to her.
Homer is without a doubt an idiot through and through, but he wouldn’t dream of doing a quarter of the things Peter does to his daughter. (Mostly because Lisa is a kid and I don’t think Homer could get away with torturing a kid on primetime tv) but because he genuinely really likes his daughter. I don’t think Peter even likes himself let alone Meg.
The difference between the Simpson family and the Griffins is that the Simpsons seem more like an actual family (where everybody tolerates each other despite their differences) whereas it feels as if the Griffins are always competing against each other.

So even when she is tempted to suppress Meg's superior talent in the one thing she's most passionate about, she ultimately doesn't. She decides to try and encourage Meg anyway even if Meg might eventually surpass her with her saxophone skills. Peter is a huge dick as always in the end and ruins it but Lisa's instinct was to turn to kindness and sacrifice because that's the example Homer has set for her. Peter, on the other hand, is literally an abusive father and the gag hasn't been funny for a long time.
The Maggie and Homer relationship is probably the second best in the show.
I'd love to see it when Maggie grows up. She seems to have more of Bart's attitude in flash forwards whilst still having Lisa's intelligence and interest in music which Homer shares. They both like rock and she's the only one to call him daddy.
Homer's scene at the end of Lisa's Substitute makes me cry far more than Bergstrom leaving.

The ending of Lisa's Wedding made me cry, it's beautiful in what it's simplicity states. Great analysis guys! I marvel at The Simpsons' brilliant humour, but it's heart makes it deeper, more relatable, and more profound, and is a superb addition to the show.

Homer and Lisa episodes are usually the best ones. That said, one of my favourite episodes is Marge Be Not Proud. Granted its a Bart/Marge episode but you know, the dynamic is similar

I don’t know if anyone else touched on this, but I just realized that the episode "Lisa’s Substitute" is a fitting name, and well thought out, because he’s a new substitute "dad" for Lisa. Double entendre. It’s probably obvious to most, but I missed it lol
Oooh I just realized that. Lisa's Substitute can also mean her "substitute" father figure. But like all substitutes he eventually leaves for Homer to return as her real fathrr figure.

Long story short i am a child of divorce because of reasons. before my parents split when i was a lot younger i had a really close bond with my dad. He was the person that got me really into music from the start due to him being a DJ, a radio presenter on a local station and also playing the drums. i was young though and when your that age you just get a little blinkered and you don't see how different people really are. after my parents split i lived with my mum and older brother. I bonded so much more with my mum in the years i lived with her. i found we had respect for each other and she supported me through every decision and realised i was growing up and wasn't a little girl anymore i was a young woman. i also realised that my dad wasn't like that. he still sees me as a little girl and has no clue who the person i am now is. these days i feel my dad doesn't know me at all. i know his intentions are honourable and he just wants me to have a stable future but my current life situation is not what i want but it saddens me that i know he won't like the choice i have made in my life to leave my home city and go back to college full time and stuff. Not all of us have a Homer. my mum gets me more and that's what means a lot to me. My Homer is my mum. we are different people and we don't try to make the other be like each other but we get each other and as long as my mum is happy i am happy and as long as i am happy my mum is happy.
This video got me to nearly cry thinking of the loss of my father. Cheers to a great series and video!

Whenever I think about Homer and Lisa's relationship one of the episodes I think of is that Lego episode (can't remember the name) where Homer and Lisa start building a Springfield together until Lisa becomes more interested in another topic.

My favorite Homer and Lisa episode is when Lisa has an out of body experience and sees the world through Homer's eyes. She then understands how hard she's been on Homer, when all he's been doing is trying to spend time with her. He may get along with Bart better, but it's sweet to see him try to spend time with his daughters.

It's the only way to truly do justice to your channel name - The fat one would have to appear onscreen at some point, of course. Your answer confused me, so this would also aid in differentiating which one of you is better looking (No fat shaming here! Honestly this is why I prefer Simpsons over Family Guy, not only is it funnier, but it has a heart, which is something that Family Guy just lacks.

One of my favourite channels, love these video essays!
For me the episode that illustrates Homer as having the biggest heart is Maggie makes three, the ending destroys me and I always dread when it's on with family around.
As a father to very smart little girl I appreciated this man. I can’t help but relate to homer sometimes but I do my best. Well done on this video man.
My favorite episode of the entire series is the episode of Lisa and Homer involving that museum. I also have a soft spot for the shoplifting episode that focused on Bart and Marge's relationship.
Homer and Lisa's relationship always reminded me of "The Odd Couple," in the same sense you mentioned in your video. They may not see eye to eye but deep down their love toward each other shines through.
My favourite Homer and Lisa moment is when they both go into the sensory deprivation chamber and Lisa realizes that while Homer doesn't like ballets, classical concerts and such, he loves going to them with Lisa because he loves spending time with her. It was a really heartwarming but also highlights the importance of sacrifice and appreciation in a very clever and not preachy way. Classic simpsons is a goddamn gem.

And this is another reason why the Lady Gaga episode is so hated. On that episode the plot resolves itself when Lisa ignores what Homer says and it's played off as a gag.

I love how hard Bart takes it when he disappoints Marge and how much he depends on her spoiling/pampering him. Marge's ability to overlook everything that others even Homer and Lisa view him as to see her special little guy is the absolute embodiment of a mother's love and the thing a troubled, underachiever who acts out for attention needs.

I really do love The Simpsons, pretty much more everyday. One thing I always loved about this show was how the relationships worked in it. The Homer/Lisa one worked out great, for pretty much the same reasons you explained. Homer would always sacrifice something he loved for Lisa's happiness, and in return Lisa accepts who he is and would give up her own happiness to show her love for Homer, like in "Lisa' Wedding." I'm also a fan of the other Simpson family relationships too. Bart and Lisa, despite getting involved in sibling rivalries (like almost anyone else with siblings like myself, honestly), they usually work together, like in some of the Sideshow Bob episodes or when one of them is in danger/trouble. Bart is usually the one who notices the problem and Lisa would be the one who figures out how to solve it. One of the examples for the relationship in my opinion are "Sideshow Bob Roberts" where Sideshow Bob wins an election. Bart and Lisa work together to figure out what is going on, only to realize that Sideshow Bob rigged the election by putting in votes under the names of a lot of deceased people/pets. Bart and Marge is another good one I'd say. Marge would always be there for Bart, seeing that he is good in the inside, and Bart would always sympathize with her in certain situations. I always look up to "Marge Be Not Proud" as the best episode to use the relationship. In the beginning Marge treats Bart with great affection until he was caught shoplifting, which left her to distrust Bart entirely and to distance herself from Bart. Bart realizes that Marge pretty much no longer loves him so he tries to make things right by retaking his picture since Marge desperately wanted a great family photo for Christmas. Maggie usually works well with any other Simpson, although her relationship with Homer is the only one that gets more than one episode, with Homer really getting along with Maggie when he doesn't forget her during father and baby moments. Maggie usually enjoys her time with Homer once she plays with him. It's a great relationship that doesn't get mentioned a lot. I recommend "And Maggie Makes Three" for a great reason why the relationship is great, the ending alone explains it all. Finally, I want to mention the relationship I personally love, the relationship between Homer and Marge. They have great chemistry for most of the series but their relationship episodes are where it really shines. Whenever Homer does something that would ruin the relationship, he is usually oblivious to his own selfishness before eventually realizing that he needs to fix the situation, showing how much he loves Marge and how loyal he can be to her. Marge usually would not be happy with the selfish action Homer takes in the specific episode. However, Marge knows how that in the end, she truly loves Homer and she would forgive him, and also defend him when people like her sisters Patty and Selma put Homer down for who he is. I feel that "Secrets of a Successful Marriage" is an underrated yet, phenomenal example of the relationship. Homer starts a new job as a marriage teacher and has nothing to say so he spills secrets about Marge so his classmates will listen to him instead of quitting the class. Homer is oblivious to Marge's frustration about her secrets being told and makes Homer promise not to spill anymore secrets, which he brakes pretty much the next day. Marge rightfully kicks Homer out for his selfishness and nearly considers a divorce. Homer then reappears, already in bad shape and tells Marge that he is dependent on her. It may not sound that great, but without her love, Homer will die in poverty really quick, he needed someone, and realizes his mistakes earlier in the episode. They then reconcile. I'm glad you put this video up, and maybe if possible, do a video on another Simpson relationship? I personally enjoy this topic as a whole!

I love the relationship between Homer and Lisa! 💜 Even in the episodes when it’s not central to the plot there can be some small endearing moments between them.
The only thing is I didn’t care for Hugh. I didn’t find him sympathetic.

This is exactly the Homer/Lisa content I needed and I'm so happy this video exists. I've been trying to explain for years and years why I love their relationship so much and this video nailed it. Well done~
There's also two more moments you didn't touch on in this video but Lisa's comment during the tribute video about Homer where he checks for monsters under her bed. Also one random episode where their relationship isn't even the focus but there's a great moment where Homer comes to talk to Lisa in her bedroom and they're both grumbling under their breaths over what they think the other is thinking where it gradually just comes to a mutual make up between them and it's legit the best thing.
A lot of Lisa and Homer moments are among my all-time faves!

My favorite Homer and Lisa episode is probably Bart on the Road. This is one of the only episodes that makes it seem as if Homer and Lisa actually do have shared interests. They spend the whole episode enjoying each other's company, and when the time comes, Homer even promises not to get mad at Bart for Lisa's sake. The episode expanded on their relationship in an interesting way, by introducing Bart to the mix.
I'd say Homer has a more better relationship with Lisa than Bart. They're are completely different but their love for each other is just the most heartwarming thing ever on this show.

I do love how Lisa turns to Homer for help after Bart gets into trouble during spring break. He sets up a whole charade that makes sure that Lisa is off the hook and Bart is still okay with Marge.

I love Lisa and Homers relationship and it is really real and mine and my dad are like this and I loved how this show makes the family seem real and alive.
I'm really crying over a Simpsons analysis video
God this show was so good, it's smarter and has more heart than most TV. Growing up I really identified with Lisa, I even wanted to learn to play the saxophone (but my family was too poor for that). I also really liked Wednesday Addams, I think it was important for me as a boy to see female characters who weren't just defined by their gender. They were smart, confident, and had a fully realised personality. I find when it comes to difficult family relationships in fiction the situation is oversimplified and one person is the clear bad guy. But with Homer and Lisa it's really nuanced and they're both trying their best.
