Cactus repotting surprises | Cactus seedlings rescue, Rebutia

  • I was into a real surprise the other day while repotting some of the cacti from the genus Rebutia in my cactus & succulent plant greenhouse collection! Hidden inside the pot of a Rebutia spegazziniana was an entire batch of seedlings that had germinated and grown in the shade and protection of their mother plant. They had obviously germinated from seeds of the previous spring and summer blooming period that had formed and then fallen off the mother plant.
    Cacti from the cactus genus Rebutia are wonderful cacti to be growing, and are very suitable both for beginners as well as experienced growers! I am showing some of the wonderful blooms and also providing some growing tips.
    I hope you enjoy this unexpected surprise rescue of an entire cactus kindergarten!
    Cheers,
    Joe

    Lovely Rebutia, Joe. Love these cacti but for me they are a real spider mite magnet. Thank you for sharing with us my friend. Have a wonderful evening and weekend from Edith & myself and happy growing as always 👍🏻🌵☀️🌸🌼🌺🏜

      Thanks Daz, very happy that you liked the Rebutia! Thanks so much for watching and also commenting, appreciated as always my friend! Yes indeed, some of these cacti appear to be quite tasty to spider mites, haha, and require frequent checks and treatment if and when the alarms go off. In my experience they are less prone to attack in a location with lot's of air movement and slightly higher humidity, ...but I'm not 100% sure about that yet. Any experiences your end? And also, if you do get spider mites, how do you treat? Sending you and Edith very best cactus greetings and a wonderful weekend! 🙏😊👍🌞🌵🪴🌵🏵🌺🌻💚😎

    Nice little bonus Joe!!! I've found seedlings like this also in my greenhouse. Both Euphorbia and Cactus!! The Euphorbias when I don't catch the seed capsule on time , hahaha!! Or sometime with cactus when a fruit falls and I don't notice it. Or I laid a trichocereus fruit aside in a pot that had soil, forgot it and a few months later found a bunch of nice seedlings growing in it!! Always a surprise somewhere!!! Thanks for sharing Joe!!! Great little Rebutia seedlings!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, out to Bavaria, Germany 🇩🇪, have a wonderful weekend!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌️💖🌵🥀🌳🏵🌿🌷🌱🌴🌸🌲🌹💐🍀🌻🌾🪴😃👍

      Thanks so much Clyde, very happy you liked the little Rebutia seedlings surprise! Yes indeed, as you say, this occasionally happens when we are too late catching a falling ripe cactus fruit, often though the cacti are really very quick to sow themselves, haha! Some cacti & also Euphorbia, as you point out, are pretty fast and stealthy with this, including many Rebutia, Parodia, etc. Wishing you a great week ahead and sending lots of cactus greetings to you at Morris Park in the Ozarks!!😊👍🌵🌱🌵🌼🌺🏵💚😎

      @Cactusfield hi there, many thanks for watching and commenting! Glad you liked the Rebutia blooms and also found the story in the video interesting about the little seedlings that have grown inside the pot of their motherplant all summer without me discovering them...until I repotted a week or so ago, haha!
      Yes, when you think of it, that is actually exactly what goes on in nature all the time of course, the seeds that ripen in the fruits on cacti will either eventually drop to the ground to germinate there, somewhere near or around the base of the mother plant, ...OR be transported some distance first by e.g. insects, birds, other animals, or even by the wind, to germinate in that spot some distance away. Of course it rarely happens in our plant collections since we tend to collect the seed before they fall off the plants and into the pots. Also, the growing conditions in our collections are often not so ideal for seedlings to easily germinate in the open pots...which is why instead they will normally be grown from seeds in special and protected growing conditions. Anyways, glad you found the video and topic interesting! Have a wonderful day, Peace, and Happy Growing!!

      Hi Nick! Yes indeed, I try as much as possible to grow most of my cacti & other succulents in terracota pots...in fact, after my experiences during last year's very hot summer i replaced almost all my plastic pots. Just kept the very large ones, mainly for weight reasons. And like you, I also water more often the smaller pots than the larger ones...obviously they dry out so much faster! Thanks, super to read your comments and your experiences & best practices, thanks so much for sharing! Cactus greetings to Denmark and happy growing of course!👍👍😊🙏🌵🌵😘🌺🏵🌺💚😎

      @@cactusjoe Hello there Joe :) Black plastic pots seemed to get way to hot last summer indeed, i wrapped them in tin foil, but it looked really bad. So also changed everything to terra cotta. Just i was a bit worried about the 7cm pots being to small and drying out, also i added a bit more organic in those to keep the humidity longer. Thank you for your wonderful long answers! You are such an lovely guy to watch, and your English are amazing for an German :p Best regards from Denmark :)

    Brilliant Joe 😎 My very first seedling also slid down the cactus (Owcho, the one in my avatar) and grew in the pot without me knowing till the next season. It flowered for the first time last year. I lost quite a few Rebutias last summer, I gave them shading in the hot summer but I think the pots got too hot and damaged their roots. Will watch out for that if it gets as hot this year. Good video and a good find my friend, have a lovely weekend 😊😊🌵🌵

      Sorry to hear about you losing some of your Rebutias in that dreadful heat of last summer. I'm curious, were they in terracota or in plastic pots? Let's hope the coming summer is a bit more forgiving, although I suppose we will all be better prepared this time, if it did become such a scorcher again! @@cactusjoe Yep, Owcho is a Parodia, he's now the mother of about 2,000 babies 😁The Rebutias were in plastic pots, the ones in the cactus house in teracotta did much better. Folk won't usually pay extra for the pots though so plastic will have to do in the for sale section. If it gets that hot again I'll rake gravel up around the pots. Hope you're having a good weekend my friend 😊😊🌵🌵

    Hi from Colorado, Joe! your Rebutia babies are so tiny and so darling!! Im sure theyll do well in your care! I have a question: Is there a general " rule of thumb" on telling the difference between cacti and succulents! The growers who supply big box stores in my area (Home Depot and WalMart) do not label their plants nor does one of the private garden centers I buy from,!! 👎👎 I know some require brighter light and drier soil and conditions than others!! Hope you can give me an "easy, simple way" to tell the difference!! haHa😂😂 Thanks for your help!!

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  Před rokem

      Hi Cherie, greetings to you from Bavaria! Thanks for watching and I'm really happy that you enjoyed these little cactus seedlings! Thanks also for your question, which is a really very good one, as it is not always that easy to say, especially if one is relatively new to the hobby.
      Generally speaking, and botanically, all plants that have specially adapted, thick, fleshy stems that are able to store water for prolonged periods of drought are called succulents - so all cacti (plants belonging to the family of Cactaceae) are succulent plants ...but, hence, not all succulents are cacti, as there are also succulent plants in other plant families...e.g. in the family of spurges or Euphorbia. Many of these succulent Euphorbias can resemble cacti at first sight, however, once you get your eye in, especially their "spines" look quite different (and are actually thorns, not spines, the latter of which only cacti have).
      if you are interested, I actually have a video on this topic on my channel...it is about Cacti vs. Euphorbia and Convergent Evolution (which is the scientific phenomena behind their somewhat similar appearances! ...similar environmental conditions can result in similar morphologies, as a result of adaptation to these similar environments...hot, dry and arid in the case of our cacti and other succulents!
      Hope this all makes a bit of sense and is useful. Have a great weekend, happy growing!

    Hi Joe,I am watching you here in USA Indiana to be exact,love all the video's great job,just have question since March is here,we will turn clock's ahead for spring in a week,can I start to water the cacti plants that I do keep dormant some look a little shrunk up.What do you suggest? Thank you so much!

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  Před rokem

      Hi Catherine, awesome, thanks for your wonderful feedback, I'm super happy to hear that you are enjoying the videos!!🙏😊 Also, thanks for your question, and whether/when to start watering wil depend a little on the location that you have your cacti currently in. But it sounds like you have kept them dormant, so dry and cool, over the winter. So as the sun comes out more often, and the temps in your growing location start to rise, you could indeed gradually start to "wake up" your cacti during the month of March. What I do, is to start with just some very small amounts of water in every pot, so not a full drenching, but instead some very light "spring rain", and I do that on warmer, sunnier days. I do that in the mornings, so the plants can dry off by the end of the day, but no problem if the soil itself is still a little damp then. These light, gradual waterings will signal to the plants that spring is coming and that they can slowly start to develop their new roots for the upcoming season. After a few of these lighter waterings, and as you see the cacti become more plump and less shrivelled again, then you can go ahead with the regular and full drenching waterings, i.e. "sumer rain", haha! For me, in my location, that would not be before April. So you will just need to adjust a bit to your own setting and climate. Hope this helps a little bit and is not confusing!
      Thanks so much for watching and also for commenting, much appreciated! Sending lot's of cactus greetings out to you in Indiana, USA, enjoy your weekend and happy growing of course!👍🌞🌵🪴🌵🏵🌺🌻💚😎
