In this episode, we're back with more Dexter Gordon licks! This time, we'll be looking at some choice phrases from his solo on Cole Porter's classic tune, Love For Sale. There's lots to learn from any transcription, but in this one, we'll be looking at how Dexter handles the same chord progression multiple different ways.
Through this kind of study, we can see not only multiple ways that we can handle common chord changes, but we can also learn how we can use call backs or motifs to develop a solo and give our improvisations a sense of cohesion.
This solo is also a fantastic example of an improvisation that doesn't need to be absolutely BURSTING with bebop language in order to sound good. There's lots of really tasty melodic playing here that uses nothing more than some simple scales.
