Fire Chief Tim Duncan said on Tuesday morning that one person died in the explosion - a 19-year-old. The person was hit by a projectile from the explosion.

I hated the fact that I fought where I am going and how to get to work at the last minute. My neighbor scared the shit outta me when she came to my car window to tell me I can't go out of my way out. I had to go somewhere around Groesbeck. She's right, I had to go to Gratiot and make a u-turn on Metro hwy. Made it to work without being late. smh

I am a retired firefighter captain from a highly petrochemical industrial shipping port city and I have had my share of major fires and explosions...it is a difficult decision to keep the troops back a mile while the 500 + fireballs subside before going in to fight!!! Li-Ion fires cannot be suppressed easily (if at all). Most firefighting outfits aren't prepared; they don't have the newer technologies to combat it. Water is nearly worthless against Li-Ion chemistry--somewhat like vs. napalm.

In news video in other videos in one corner there is a continuous fountain of water from beneath the rubble. Presumably that is where the fire protection system riser was located. FPS can get overwhelmed quickly.
