I’ve purchased both and tried them both thoroughly and the winner was easily the 85, surprisingly. My guess is that the soundsurge 90 is mostly made of components that are a few years old and was supposed to be the predecessor to the soundsurge 55. With that being said, the 85 sound a little better, but the main reason why I kept them is because they’re a hundred times more comfortable than the 90 are. Their passive noise cancelling is better than the passive noise canceling on the 90s, but ANC on the 90s is amazing and blows the 85s out of the water. If you ask me, I’d recommend the 85s
over the 90s 9/10. The only time I’d say to get the 90s is if you’re on an airplane all day but that’s it. If you guys have any more questions feel free to ask

Alexis Nguyen I have to go with the Anker life q20. Better noise cancelling (Best for the price), Better customer service as well which is always something that is nice down the road. Sound quality is about the same. The only thing is that I like the styling of the ss85 a lot more, but for home or travel use, there’s no reason not to go with the q20. Just also a little note, if you keep an eye out and check daily, you’ll find both the ss85 and q20 go on sale about weekly

@@ayuwisea9660 if you find the 85s uncomfortable, you will definitely hate the 90s. I didn't really get ear fatigue with either for hours but the 90 definitely will give you ear fatigue first, and probably in under an hour since the ear cups only swivel in one direction so they are won't contour to your head comfortably and they clamp harder on your head to trick you into thinking they have good ANC. If you have any other questions feel free to ask!

Ive bought both of these and tested them out to see which one i wanted. Things ive noticed; 90s are heavier, so when you wanna work out with them..get the 85s. The 90s def have a wider soundstage and can compete with the sony level of sound the 85s are good but nothing of a wow factor. When you play music on the 90s you hear quality. Then the anc..it just works better on the 90s. Also the blue blinking lights on the 85s annoyed me haha. I went with the 90s with usb c in the end and im satisfied. I do have to say wish they were 50 grams lighter then they would be perfect but in return you do get sturdy metal pieces on the cups. If you have questions go ahead. Like the video JdL as always

I discovered your channel exactly 2 days ago when I approached to make my final decision on the bluetooth headphones. For the very long time I was pretty sure to buy the Edifier W820BT, although then I found the reviews on the MPOW H12 and was almost sure to buy these. But then, apparently you showed up with your stupid accurate reviews and comparisons between some models that I started to be interested in. I am in Europe, a small country called Lithuania. Recently got the 85's from german amazon with some special offer, now it is gone and price is higher. So it is my first "big" on-ear type of earphones. I use it with a hi-res bluetooth FiiO player, a cheap one, nothing fancy. And 85's work absolutely good :) i have nothing to be sorry. For roughly 50 EUR it is cheap. Maybe my expectations was too high how the noise cancelling should work, but anyways it is good. I really love type C charge, long lasting battery and very fast bluetooth connection to any device. If money is an issue (as it is for me), go for it and don't try to compare to the others. I did so and not interested to change or upgrade for the next 2 years. I hope the 85's will last for this period. Thumbs up, and you all keep healthy!

I've owned the 85s for nearly 2 years and this review is absolutely bang on... Even down to the fact that you mentioned it takes a little while to "feel" for the on/off button, but once you memorise where it is, you can do it without looking.
I'm a producer and mastering engineer. I can't mix on these headphones, but they are my go-to pair for checking a mix to see if it sounds balanced on a hi-fi type sound.
Personally, I think that the noise cancelling doesn't just block the outside out, I think it also activates some sort of basic amplifier as well because the bass becomes more solid and open sounding.
I've owned loads of cans, including £1000 Sennheisers and Slate VSX for music studio mixing etc. etc.
They're all kinda a different vibe. The Sennheisers 800s and 650s are really detailed and like a magnifying glass on quality. It depends on whether you enjoy critical listening or not. The taotronics 085s I can and do listen to them ALL day long. They're comfortable and the sound is not fatiguing at all.
I was thinking of upgrading, but I don't know where to go from the 085s. Its not that I want more quality, in fact, for my every day listening, I think comfort and fatigue are really important.
In terms of fatigue.. Being in a studio mixing music, I've had speakers that make you feel worn out after just a few hours. Thsts not comfortable.
Considering the 85s are in and out of my bag and on and off my head all day long. They have lasted SO well. I (stupidly) never used the hard case, but they're still durable enough and have sustained no damage at all in 2 years.
If the 90s have all the se quality as the 85s and maybe a little more. I'd be totally happy to switch over any time.

    •  Před 2 lety

I just got a pair of 90s after using the 85s for 14 months, so maybe I can help you out with this a bit. From my short time with the 90s, I'd say that there's definitely a noticable difference in sound quality - while the 85s punch way above the price, I feel like the 90s deliver a wider stage, more detail, better separation and most of all a clearer, better defined bass. The 85s have always mudded the bass too much for me. The 90s are a bit heavier, though, with metal outer shell on the cups, and, unlike the 85s, I definitely feel the weight on top of my head after a while. I still prefer them when going outside because I feel like they don't protrude as much sideways, even though they are larger. Now, the reason I still have both? The 85s are much better for casual, on the go and office use: they support multi point (90s don't), they have low latency AptX (90s don't), and the CVC8.0 mic sounds way better than CVC6.0 on the 90s. Also, I feel like the ANC messes with the music way more on the 90s.

    • @MOSMASTERING
      @MOSMASTERING Před 2 lety

@ Interesting! Thank you very much for your reply.
I could quite easily afford to get some more expensive or interesting cans than these budget ones. But, as you say, they punch way above their weight - more importantly for me, I'm very used to the sound when it comes to 'mix checking', where I can make notes and then take them back to the studio for tweaks on the song I'm working on.
I've actually tried mixing an entire record on the 085's and it was a disaster. They are definitely 'listening' speakers as opposed to flat monitors required to make records specifically.
I've never noticed the 085s muddying the bass too much - I mean, it's not completely accurate in terms of transients or punch, a little texture - and I guess you could say that its lacking in extreme low end extension and a touch smeared. But whatever crossover they are using, it's seamless from top to bottom. But it is beautiful in that its not overpowering. The worst headphones I've ever tried - especially for the money - are Beats. It's like having 2 dreadful subwoofers attached to your head with a tiny tweeter. To say they're unbalanced is an understatement. I've heard people say they're designed to enjoy bass music like Hip Hop. But any decent producer already mixed the song as well as possible, so to take that mix and skew it completely into the realms of unbalanced absurdity is an insult to music!
I think that bass reproduction on the 085s MASSIVELY depends on the genre and the production. I say that because short, sharp EDM pluck type bass sounds are excellent - but lower sub bass, (ie Breaks, Drum and Bass, some Hip Hop type sub wobbles - thinking "Dead Prez - Hip Hop" etc.) doesn't go low enough to reproduce the chest rattle 20hz - 50hz ish range. If there is anything down there anyway. But, they've done an excellent job of rolling off the low end so it doesn't abruptly feel like there is a chunk of sound missing.
So, bottom line for me - if I upgrade, is the new sound a total departure from the 085s, or is it similar but with more detailed low end - because I think that, I would absolutely love.
Do you agree with me regarding the amplification effect of the ANC ? Because in a completely quiet room, just switching between on and off, definitely adds some tightness and seemingly more extension into the highs. That's my perception anyway.
The weight of the 085s is just incredible. They're so comfortable I don't even know they're on my head sometimes. Did you say that you notice the difference in that department? 90s are a bit heavier?
Additionally, latency has never bothered me - I don't know where it would make a difference listening to music - I guess it would watching videos on your phone if the video and audio go out of sync - but is it not compensated for?
      What is multipoint?
I hate taking calls on the headphones - I always turn back to phone speaker. So nothing about the microphone would interest me really.

    •  Před 2 lety

@@MOSMASTERING I listened to a ton of different genres on the 85s and you get used to them, but then again - I used to own a pair of Koss PortaPros and I have a pair of KZ ZS6 in ear monitors with 4 drivers each, so I like to compare between these various architectures, and I was definitely missing the details in the mids and the bass the most, and then the separation - the sound is great for everyday use but the stage is very narrow.
The ANC on the 85s does have a positive effect, I agree, and that's where (on my pair at least) I'm most disappointed with the 90s - the ANC slashes the bass a bit, but most of all it somehow constrains the sound inward, if that makes any sense, but it also puts it behind a wall, where it loses a bit of definition and volume. I'd definitely only recommend in situations where the noise is really terrible, because even in the street with cars and all passive isolation is more than enough for me.
Weight - yes, the 90s are heavier, but not uncomfortable. They're just not almost unnoticeable like the 85s.
Latency is important for videos, yes, but AptX support on the 85s means better sound because of how it's processed, and low power usage when compared to AAC, for example. Also, it's better for Android phones... although I've been using AAC without issue on my Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite.
Multipoint is simultaneous connection to two devices - it's been amazing for work, because I could be on Zoom on my PC and instantly switch to a call on the phone. And yeah, I've gone through a whole year of working from home on the 85s, that's why the mic is important - I could be on a Zoom or group call and go about my business around the house, and chip in when needed. It's a game changer for me.

    • @MOSMASTERING
      @MOSMASTERING Před 2 lety

@ I really appreciate you taking the time to discuss your experience.
That's very interesting about the ANC on the 90s. Are you suggesting that inversely to the 85s, its actually better with the noise cancelling OFF on those headphones?
I use Bluetooth with AptX on my android phone, but if I was going to try and get the best quality, I'd happily switch to minijack. Then just go to Bluetooth for the gym or something so I don't get twisted in cables!
I don't think I'd ever use Multipoint really..
I have it on a set of studio speakers - I never knew what it was called.
It's really annoying - I'll be listening to something.. suddenly, my girlfriend's call to her family (whilst she is in a different room) will connect by bluetooth at random to my speakers and I'll be able to hear the conversation mixed into what I'm. I have no idea why it does this, because it can be anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes into the call before bluetooth decides to reach out and connect at random to my device with no warning.

You put out great content! I got the 90s based on your comment about the sound (and at the time the 85s were out of stock). You're right, they sound fantastic! A note to other viewers: my wife and I have very different sized heads - these fit me fine with some slack to go, but they're too big to fit her. Part of me wonders if I should have got the lighter 85s once in-stock, but these def feel nice and plush and the sound really is beautiful based on my limited experience. I wanted these especially for listening to audio clips for language learning, music, and of course, CZcams. So far it's been handling all of these very well and I think I got a great value for the money. ANC works well, but it's not really a feature I plan to use much since I wear these out walking and I want to be able to hear cars coming when crossing the street and such.

My soundsurge 90's arrived and they look great! The issue that I have is that my head is too small for the headphones so they hang down almost an inch past my ears. In the video, it almost seems like the 85's are a smidge smaller. Propping the 90's up won't be suitable long term so I'd like to see if you could compare them to see if they really are smaller in the height of the head piece. I have previously purchased some Insignia headphones from Best Buy, but after hours of use, they hurt my ears. That's why I'm on the search for a solid pair of budget headphones that fit.

Hi, I'm your fans from Malaysia. I know it's impossible but I'm a bit greedy haha. I'm thinking to get a perfect headphone that have great performance on sound quality, durability and also mic clarity. A lot of youtuber recommend Soundcore Life Q30, which have really impressive performance on everything but the mic sounds bad (is it fixed after the software update?). Then I found Soundsurge 90 & SoundPEATS A6 are not bad too after I watched the reviews, at least the mic sounds clearer than the Q30. But I didn't test any of them so I am here to ask for your suggestion, which headphone is better? Previously I was struggled because there's too much of good headphones, like Soundcore Life Q30, Steelseries Arctis 5, Hyperx Cloud II, Edifier W820NB and so on. I will be using the headphone for music, movies, discord call and little bit of gaming.

He's right about feeling satisfied regardless of what you buy. I bought the 85's and they are fantastic headphones for such a low price. The attic fan in the hallway makes it sound like an airplane at my desk, but these 85's cancel out 80-90% of the noise. So much nicer. They'll be a daily companions for a while. They fit great, and so far I haven't felt any ear fatigue. Very light headphones, I will definitely be able to work out in these.
Update: My 85's stopped turning on a few months back. The ANC still works, and I can still use them with the aux cable, but the bluetooth is out the window. Don't know how common this is. They still charge and everything. They just won't turn on with the power button. Ended up buying a used pair of 90's to give them a shot. They are definitely more refined than the 85's. The 85's are a newer, cheap set with good quality with a minimalistic setup, but the 90's have better functionality and noise cancelling. I still would say get the 85's though because if the 85's break you still have a good pair of wired noise cancelling headphones, whereas the 90's will lose their noise cancelling if they ever bite the dust.
