  • Forrester Savell shows how to work with drum room tracks when mixing metal drums using the raw multi-tracks for "Deadman" by Karnivool from their 2009 album "Sound Awake" -- and why you DON'T have to use all the tracks at your disposal.

Forrester is a wonderful engineer, among the best in the world. I loved is work with Karnivool, as well as his work with The Butterfly Effect, Sky Harbor, Animals as Leaders, Dead Letter Circus, and many more.
I wish he could get Karnivool back into his studio and force them to make another album. It's been too long since Asymetry, and way too long since Sound Awake when he had his hands in the mix.

Wow how am I just seeing this. Sound awake is one of my favorite albums ever. And I'm a drummer who is also sucker for a wide stereo image.
I'd love to see a similar breakdown for Aenima. The drums sound so good on it and I'd love to know what went into going into creating it. I also read Danny Carey's trigger pads were mic'd into a PA while recording to make the sound stronger.

Should we worry about the bass spill over the drums causing phase issues on the bass channel or nah ?

I found that interesting too, he explains it in the full mix video.
