You're judging the entire concept of the character based solely on the first part of a 300+ issue run. And it's the first part of a brand new character at that. It took time to work out the details and it's a slow burn series. It gets drastically better after the mid way point. And yes the "collectability" of the first issue is poor because of a high print run. But it wasn't just printed out the rear for no reason. You have to consider the fact that it sold an insane amount of issues based on speculative hype. Especially when you take into consideration the launch happened at the "peak before the crash" of the comic industry so people were buying it like crazy hoping it would be worth a ton in the future. Obviously that didn't pan out. But there are tons of issues throughout the run worth relatively good money due to low print run and or character appearances. Etc. But those don't happen until the post 100ish. I respect your attempt to reviewing the character. I just feel your grading criteria and "downsides/negatives" of the comic are unjust and some potentially irrelevant once you zoom out to the bigger picture of things or get more details. No disrespect or anger directed. Just pointing out my opinion on the issues with the character put forth in the review.

Spawn is a somewhat quirky product, but has clear greatness as a horror-adventure title! Yes, Macfarlane is not a comicwriter on par with Alan Moore, but very few are. This simply cannot be a criteria as Alan Moore sits high almost without peers. Macfarlane offers instead an eccentric gothic take on the american superhero that is found nowhere else. And so what Spawn lacks in sophistication of narrative, it has in vibe, world-building and visual expression. I find it a highly original contribution.

It was a ground breaking series for the first 30-40 issues. After that it was a cash grab. HBO animated series.. at least season 1 & 2 did it right. You had to be there when it came out… like so many other great comic moments.. like when Frank Miller’s Dark Knight or Year One or buying Claremont/Byrne’s X-Men out of the back issue bins. So glad I was a kid when that all went down. From about 78 to 93 was a golden age of comics that we will never see again. Todd McFarlane helped redefine comics and comic entrepreneurship with Spawn.

Dude you are an absolute tool
None of the Spawn comics are cash grabs
      I'm on issue #58
And the story and artwork just keeps getting better and better.
Every little detail that happens in every past Spawn comic
Eventually plays a bigger part in future spawn stories.
Just when you think you have his character figured out and what the plan is or spawn and what his end game is going to be
Completely slaps you in the face with another surprise.
And the HBO series was good but it did not follow the storyline of the comics.

I recently started reading it, i’ve read 40 issues and as a an 18 year old, I’d say I enjoy it. It isn’t a mind blowing story but for someone who hasn’t read too many comics besides a lot of popular stories, it’s an enjoyable series with great art. I love the art and the world building, I just enjoy being in “the world” of Spawn every now and then.

Respectfully no, Spawn unlike other runs is a "slow burn" you get to the exciting stuff well after 120th issue. Most people who stop reading Spawn do not see the eventual pay offs from story/character building. I'm mainly a DC fan myself, but Spawn is my favourite out of all, is the story slow ? Yes, but it picks up and gives you a reason to why it was slow. Obviously this is subjective.

If it wasn’t for the McFarland toy line Spawn wouldn’t have been as big as it is. The Spawn story is all over the place . He had to many writers in the beginning that added to much lore but none of it connected. The Art was A1 though. Overall Spawn is still one of the most successful American creator own comic but not because of the actual comic but because of the business mindset of Todd.

Spawn comics are definitely not overrated
Especially when you consider the absolute crap that is pumping out of the mainstream comic book line today.
I'm currently rereading the spawn series
And I am on issue 58.
And the story just keeps getting better and better along with the artwork
And the stories keep getting darker and darker
But what's even more cool is that all the little things that happened in the past spawn issues eventually end up playing a huge part in future issues.
    There's no forced identity politics
    No forced lgbtq politics
No messages will ever be shoved down your throat.
    My only complaint?
Some of spawns side stories that are actually pretty important to the main spawn series, are in one shot comics that are hard to find and no longer in print.
Some of these side stories existed just to sell whatever one shot comic or series that was doing poorly by having bigger brand named character in it.
This will know they'll leave a lot of people confused
    Especially the infamous shoelace face
    Which was because of Batman
Throwing a batarang straight into Spawns face.
This will no doubt leave many people confused
Because it is no longer a part of the main series.
Anyways terribly sorry for the long rant.

As someone who started reading spawn with #6 (also picked up Wildcats #2) as a sixteen year old, I'll say it was revolutionary. The story was good, the art was great (Art beats stories in comics) and nothing could compete with the early Spawn comics. Plus in comparison to the majority of today's mainstream comics, the early Spawn books are vastly superior in art and story.

Spawn is definitely not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, i like it for what it is. This might be a controversial opinion, but I don’t think the movie was that bad. Is it the best thing ever? Hell No, not by a long shot. If they didn’t try to go for a PG-13 and tried to stay closer to the comics, it would have been significantly better than what the final product ended up being. The movie did end up with an R-rating anyways, but was edited even more to get that rating they wanted and I say all this after watching the Director’s Cut version. The HBO series however is fantastic, that’s some top notch television imo.

As someone new to spawn, started at 300. I can see from some of the older issues why in its time it was popular. I wish I collected it as a kid, I loved dark anime and dark shows so it would have been my thing. However reading from 300 onwards it's alright. I think gunslinger spawn is much better for new readers. It's more focused story.

Spawn is great except when it’s not. I’ve read every issue as it came out since 1992 and I can attest to the book having amazing highs and deep lows. However, I would argue that when it’s not great its still better than a lot of other comics being put out at that time. My favorite run is issue 32 until the end of Greg Capullo’s run around issue 100. The reason there are so many #1 copies is because it sold millions when it was printed and people saved them. They were not over printed. They actually sold most of them to customers, so that’s a weird criticism. McFarlane prints variant covers now but he didn’t used to. The first variant covers he ever did were for issue 100. I will agree with you that Spawn’s world wasn’t completely fleshed out by issue 15 but I would challenge you to find a comic universe that springs fully formed. Superman didn’t get most of his identifiable qualities until the late golden age and into the silver age. I would encourage you to keep reading as Spawn’s mythos and McFarlane’s writing start to improve over a relatively quick time period.

For me, Spawn has a decent amount of potential: a mercenary who is the pawn to both Heaven and Hell without him knowing it yet while looking for his wife. Sadly, Todd McFarlane, while great as a penciller, is abysmal as a writer, keeping Spawn, both as a character and comic book, from reaching his narrative potential. The best Spawn comics, while very, very few, are those not written my McFarlane, mainly David Hine's run, which could've brought a closure to Spawn's struggle between Heaven and Hell. The HBO cartoon, however, is amazing, easily, the best Spawn has ever had for a while.

I remember one reviewer once said that Quenten Tarantino spent his entire life in video stores watching action flicks, cut off from any meaningful contact with the real world. The movies that he makes seems to be attempting to mimic that pop culture without having anything else. In other words, all style and no substance.
I think the same thing can be said about Todd McFarlane. He wanted to imitate the best selling comic books of his adolescent years but didn't have any real plot to propel them with.
With regards specifically to the comic book Spawn, this wasted failure could have been a masterpiece. It could have been a great commentary on the meaning of morality and ethics as a demon tries to figure out what it takes to be an angel. The thing that ultimately ruined it is McFarlane's belief, shared by many atheists, that the Judeo Christian God is beyond good and evil.

Not Dante's Inferno enough. Other writers are better. McFarlane is an artist, not much of a writer. He isn't Byrne or Starlin or other writers/artists of great fame. Cruise control for 2 decades. Of course looking at anything back in 90s from year 2022 many are so cringey, including comics. Those shit titles from Image way back was so so bad with titles like The Pact, Wildcats, Youngblood. Hahahahah i bought them all and threw them all away in the garbage recently.
