I really wish they did a straight up adaptation of the MK2 storyline, then a proper MK3 adaptation. the new live-action MK movie should've taken Scorpion's Revenge as a blueprint. Adapting the story of the original 3 MK games would make an excellent Mortal kombat film trilogy.
Great to see Phelous bring on Tabmok to tackle the latest Mortal Kombat movie adaptation. Hopefully there will be a MK film about SIRO: THE GREATEST MORTAL KOMBAT CHARACTER!
Siro deserved a trilogy of 3 hour long movies.

I know someone made a similar comment on another video. But, between this movie and Welcome to Raccoon City, it seems that the filmmakers keep making the same mistake of cramming too many games into one adaptation instead of focusing on just adapting the one game they're supposed to

This movie is ok,but It should've been split into two parts,one focusing on the tournament,part 2 focusing on the kamidogu/Shinnok plot.

I agree they should just save shinnok for the third movie and just have Liu Kang just defeat shao Kahn and that's up for the third movie with him facing shinnok ask the big bad in the third movie

Whose idea was it to cram MKII, MKIII, MK4, and MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero into one movie? They wasted so much potential! Scorpion's Revenge felt kinda crammed because it was trying to be an adaptation of the first MK game and a Scorpion origin story, but it felt like a good starting point for an animated Mortal Kombat movie franchise. Battle of the Realms feels like the conclusion of one big long story arc except we are seeing it play out all at once without any build up. It makes the DCEU look well thought out in comparison. At least those movies had longer runtimes. Hell, the 2021 Mortal Kombat felt more thought out. What's next? Are they gonna adapt Deadly Alliance, Deception, and Armageddon? We'll be lucky if that movie gets split into two parts! Why didn't they just make an animated series?
Maybe they actually wanted to adapt 28 People Mortal Kombat, it's unfortunate they couldn't fit Mike Cage in the movie.
People seem to think putting so much in one movie is necessary 😅 I mean look at what happened to Artemis fowl that was 3 books in one movie!😨 weird right?
I was really excited and looking forward to this movie. I imagined it adapting MK2 and MK3, and perhaps be about 1 hour and 40 minutes. Instead, it's adapting MK2, MK3, MK4, and MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero, like you said. It killed all my enthusiasm, and it honestly hurts.
Like, yeah, what WOULD be next? If you just removed the Shinnok BS in this movie, the third movie could be all about Shinnok. It would have been SO EASY to fix. Instead, now I just wonder that even IF they make a third one, it will just cram in a lot more. You say Deadly Alliance, Deception, and Armageddon? I would add the plot of MK11 to that as well. Would be consistent with the bullshit they are pulling.
I wonder if it's just Warner Brothers and/or Netherrealm Studios giving up hope on this franchise? I mean, this movie didn't even come out on DVD, just Blu-ray. Every single other WB-produced animated movie has been released on both DVD and Blu-ray, so... I don't know, that's a bit telling to me.

Battle of the Realms is weaker compared to Scorpion’s Revenge I agree with that. But after the 2021 Live Action film depressed[except for Kano, because he was entertaining] I was surprised by how much I actually enjoyed it. It has issues, it’s nowhere near as good as Scorpion’s Revenge, but I would take this over the 2021 live action film.
And it’s Cole Young free so we don’t have to worry about him hotdogging and grandstanding.

I feel like there is really only one or two options for a sequel at this point, and it would have to be either a full blown Armageddon with Blaze or Time Travel with Kronika ala MK 11. Because: Liu Kang is already a god, Shao Khan is dead, and Shang Tsung & Quan Chi already don't like each other so the entirety of Deadly Alliance is gone. The Kamidogu has already been collected and used & Reptile is dead so Deception can't be done(Unless for some reason they just use Chameleon). And since Shao Khan is dead and that he himself(along side raiden) agreed to do the final tournament, Sindel can't come back to life(which is what got MK3 started).
Shao Khan and Shang Tsung are still alive(they noticed Shao Khan vanished after the One Being was defeated and Tsung was last seen still alive after he was defeated by Liu Kang)
In fact,many of their lackeys surprisingly survived this movie except Baraka(hell,there were more casualties amongst the heroes!) and they could all potentially come back for a sequel.It was actually weird how Jade vanishes from the movie after being quickly defeated by Liu Kang and Kitana never mentions her close friend again or have her join them against the One Being.
I don't even think the movie establishes that their close friends Johnny.

You know I don't think we will ever got an MK 2 adaptation because everytime they do, they HAVE to want to stuff everything else into it. Speaking of, damn it Phelous I was trying to forget about the crap sequel MK live action movie but now I will every time I will see dragon Liu Kang. When I saw this movie, it was fun but looking at it again, it IS a half of an improvement but also a half of a mess.
It kinda lost me at the one Being storyline at the end, but i love that at least Kuai Liang got a shot off at him, my dude fights omnipitent beings with down, forward, punch!
In terms of the locations, I appreciated that, in addition to the Lin Kuei Temple (MKX) and the Wu Shi Academy (MKDA), they also brought back Shinnok's Spire exactly as it appeared in MK Armageddon.

Honestly, I know so little about Mortal Kombat (basically nothing outside of what Phelous has covered in his videos) that Shaggy showing up would be way too plausible to me.

Yes I was waiting to see what Tabmok and Phelous thought of in the sequel! I know it's not perfect and has flaws, but I think the good *goofy* is what makes the movie so great as well!

Battle of the realms I thought was a disappointing sequel but it did had some potential to be amazing, my problem is with this sequel is that they combined to different plots like mortal kombat 2 3 and 4 story and slammed them into one which is the last thing I wanted because a mortal kombat animated movie with MK2 plot should've been a slammed dunk but nope we didn't get that instead we got a mess but that's just my opinion.

Mortal Kombat can't just be about Scorpion and Sub Zero but I get what you mean. I rather them focus more on Liu Kang and Johnny Cage personally but that's just me.
I like Cassie (she was my go to in MK11) and it would be nice to get a story of her, jaqui, and some of the other new fighters. I am getting bored of sub zero, scorpion, liu kang always being the focus.

There are only 3 plots I care about.
Lui Kang and Raiden.
Scorpion and Sub Zero.
Sonja and her crew (Includes Johnny Cage, Jaxx, Kano, etc).
Do not care for shinok, Noob Saibot, or whomever UNLESS they serve to tell on of those 3 relationships. So, trying to cram in more content without aiding one of those 3 stories............... just waste of time.
Guessing that Phelous got his butt kicked a lot in Moral Kombat by someone that played Stryker.
This story falls apart at "someone that played Stryker".

Best thing I could say about Battle of the Realms is it being not yet another retelling of the first tournament, which is why I was more forgiving about it than the majority of the fandom.

Kung Lao and Reptile have been treated like cannon fodder in these last couple of adaptations. At least there’s Mortal Kombat Conquest (tv show) where Kung Lao is shown as effective and competent.

Btw, why is Li Mei, whose whole storyline was about challenging Shang Tsung and fighting to free her people from servitude, is now a servant of Shao Khan? And she just gets killed by Sonya without even saying anything.
Agreed, why does Shao Khan randomly decide to spare opponents, and kill others? And why does he not use his magic "umm, match over I guess" powers when his champions are being beaten? Could have saved Kintaro...And shouldn't Jade have been more of a character here?

i don't think the Mileena in the credits was a accident, she was probably supposed to show up but they cut her scene.....i think they did the same in Scorpions Revenge with Shinnok named in the credits but he isn't in the movie
Mileena was supposed to play a big role in the movie but because they already had so much going on, they swapped her for Li Mei. That is why Li Mei's role in the movie doesn't make much sense. She's a hero but she's fighting for Shao Kahn like Mileena would.

I know it's not perfect, but I think it was better than "Scorpion's Revenge".
The only thing I want from Mortal Kombat *by this point in time* is just a Shaolin Monks-like action game, really.
Shaolin Monks is awesome. I'm not at all into co-op (and the fact that it's required to access certain bosses, even), but I'm super into Platinum Games' character-action awesomness and Netherrealm could easily do that. *They are probably insanely bored of constantly making one-on-one fighting games, I know I'd sure be* .
My biggest complaint about BotR is that they crammed so many elements from so many games into one movie.
But overall it's still my favorite of the Legends movies and my 2nd favorite MK adaptation.
Both SR and BotR make a LOT of changes to the game lore.
But I hated the way SR presented Liu Kang.
BotR, for all of it's faults still presented Liu Kang as the hero/chosen one/champion he's supposed to be.
one of the things I liked about the 2021 live-action movie, is that it wasn't a central Liu Kang story. and here's the problem. Scorpion and Sub-Zero are the poster boys of Mortal Kombat but in most of the stories, everything is centered around Liu Kang while Scorpion and Sub-Zero have far better story than Liu Kang's.
Also I'm glad Liu Kang turned into a joke in Mortal Komedy. so thank you Phelan for that!👍

Gotta be honest, I forgot this movie was a thing since I couldn't watch it at launch, so I watched it now on HBO Max in preparation for this review. As it turns out, I agree with Phelous here. This is watchable if you have extensive knowledge of the lore and impossible to get through if you don't, and it's a massive disappointment after Scorpion's Revenge (though certainly not nearly as much as the live-action reboot). A few highlights for me:
- I was also a bit upset at Liu Kang always being the winner and I was very happy for a moment when it looked like Kitana would be the one defeating Shao Kahn. But of course she had to do the stupid "Claim victory before making sure your opponent is dead" thing and ruin it.
- Like many Deadpool writers, they forgot that Johnny Cage has a personality other than "wisecracker". At least MK11 made it a point of mocking him when he wouldn't stop being insufferable, even by his future self.
- So, I guess the movie kinda forgot about Scorpion and Sub-Zero once god Liu Kang shows up? There's no actual resolution to their story.
- It would have been very easy to justify Shao Kahn's lack of bloodlust. All they had to do was to state he was so sure of his victory that he had no reason to kill his opponents (as he kinda does with Kitana but in a more general way). This would have served the double purpose of showing him to be proud and sure of himself while also differentiating him from Shang Tsung.
- Also, why no young Shang Tsung? Did they forget about that too?
The previous movie had the issue of the plot of the first game taking a backseat to Scorpion's story, but now they overcompensated by cramming nearly all remaining the plots together into one.
I think the main issue with doing a straight-up adaptation of MKII is that, of the original three games, MKII had the weakest plot. It was basically just Shao Kahn was salty about losing the last tournament and now wants a rematch. You do get some interesting characters introduced in that game, but the overall plot was extremely simple and weak.
I think there's about as much going on in MKII as there is 1, you have to dig into the characters stories and stuff to fill stuff out because they are early arcade fighting games. I think there is plenty to explore within MKII's timeline like the Scoprion and Sub-Zero story, and exploring Outworld. Shaolin Monks did a decent job showing off some of the story going on during MKII. I mean MK3 could be just as weak if you dumb it down to, Shao Kahn was mad he lost again and cheats to get another rematch. It's up to the adaptation to make the Earthrealm merging with Outworld interesting and the characters some depth otherwise you get Annihilation.
Love the crossover. Hope you guys do more MK media

Odd…I know barely anything about these games😅 but I have noticed when ANYTHING even books are adapted like say Artemis fowl, they seem to think ‘let’s stuff multiple books or games’ story in one movie, BRILLIANT!’ And then they wonder why it’s a mess🤷♀️

I've always found Liu Kang to a boring character just been as the Champion doesn't make him good. The only time I was remotely interesting as a Zombie. Or even being turned in Legasy 2.

7:50 A little correction/clarification. The Kamidogu that Shujinko collected in MKD and the Daggers Havik collected in MKX komic are quite different deal. The Kamidogu Daggers combined form Shinnok's Amulet (and even moreso, he used SIX of them. The seventh one was ultimately forgotten...).

It was also stupid how apparently, Shao Khan can just invade Earth and then for no reason decide to hold a tournament when he could have won the regular way. The Elder Gods of Useless again do not intervene because... whatever. How lazy was it anyway that Goro just got one-shot by Scorpion in the last one?
And the final villain being Crazy Old Man I never heard about (not really caring about the games beyond MKIV). If he is the god of death btw, why can't he just revive Quan Chi and have him be his servant, instead of Scorpion who already betrayed them once? And why would a god need MORE power? We have seen what Raiden can do, alone, if he uses his godly powers.
The Lin Quei plot was wasted, we never see Smoke betray the others and help Sub Zero, and he barely got anything to do before being converted. They again stupidly work for someone without checking whether the outcome would be helpful to them, I guess after Conquest, this is to be expected of the world's dumbest assassins.

Totally amazing video of mortal kombat legends battle of the realms,fantastic job and this movie is a good mess of enjoyable to watch but made the same mistakes of many others movies out there put to many things to hard to find what going in there too.
