    • @oldanslo
      @oldanslo Před 2 lety +1

      Track stands aren't an essential skill to get started riding and racing at the velodrome. Occasionally useful in match sprinting but not necessary at the beginner level since all other events are bunch races or TTs with a flying start or standing start being held. A much more useful skill is to know how to hold another rider so they can practice standing starts.
      2:17 It's easier to track stand when you turn your wheel into the side slope of the road or track. Since roads are sloped downward from center to gutter, Alex is demonstrating what is easiest on the right edge of the road, turning the wheel up slope to the left with the left crank forward. Tracks are sloped upward to the right, so it is easiest as he later shows to turn the wheel to the right. But because of significant toe overlap on track bikes, it is much better to have the right crank forward to avoid banging the front wheel into ones shoe while wobbling around.

      Have wanted to try track riding but haven't worked up the courage. After Manon took the guys out, I looked into our local velodrome, Major Taylor in Indianapolis. They have a 3 hour class that's required for new track riders and then 2 or 3 informal training sessions. Cost includes a bike rental. Maybe I will go out.

      On my one and only time on the track I was amazed how much of this was easy to pick up, but I’m guessing fixie and MTB experience counts for something (though I still can’t track stand!!) 🤣

    • @oldanslo
      @oldanslo Před 2 lety

      @@JB-sb1qg Do it! Track riding and racing is too much fun. Major Taylor is a bigger 333m outdoor track with less steep bankings (28 deg). A few laps into the class you'll wonder what all the fuss is about.

    • @Alfi-rp6il
      @Alfi-rp6il Před 8 měsíci

      @@oldanslo Right! That's exaktly what I wanted to add to this - in general - useful video.
      The advantage of turning the front wheel to the right is, too, that you are always riding 'uphill', no matter if you are going forward or backward. So you can kind of swing back and forth as if you were standing in a sink. That makes the whole thing much easier. To have the right crank forward help in doing that, because any pressure on the right leg caused by a littel loss of balance starts a movement to right/uphill and corrects itself automatically.
      But more important is this: Don't start practising track stand in the wrong way (as - unfortunately - the presenter does)!!! Once you have learnt it in the wrong way, it will be 5 times more difficult to break that habit and learn it correctly!!!

    With a track stand you want the frame to pointing slightly down the track with your front wheel pointing slightly up the track, this will require less pressure on the pedals to maintain your position. Thus meaning you can hold the track stand for longer without tiring your legs.
    Also the right pedal should be in the forward position not the rear, not only will it be a better body position but on smaller frames the toe of the rider can touch the back of the wheel when the wheel is turned that far.

    I learned the lesson to not try and freewheel a fixie whilst in road traffic. It's the worst feeling on a bike and impossible to mentally recover from on the spot. Your brain and pedal position become detached, you also get thrown into the air because you've locked your legs up.
    I won't ride a fixie on the road after that. I like standing up around traffic obstacles to get a better view which isn't possible in fixed gear. Also like to be able to throw my weight to the back of the bike to break quickly which isn't any option and I couldn't figure out how to cerb hop in fixed gear. I think freewheels are far safter on the road.

    bad advice at 3:25 regarding pedal positioning. trackstanding is always easiest with your dominant foot forward, but if you're gonna pick one it should be right foot forward on the velo so you don't have toe overlap with your wheel pointed right to hold you up the track banking.

      Track bikes have no brakes, so your only means of slowing down is to apply backwards pressure on the pedals. You wouldn't be able to do that with a freewheel - it would just spin the cranks backwards without applying any braking force to the rear wheel. You'd be surprised at how quickly you can slow down on a fixed gear bike with a little practice!

    Track stand is idiotic advice. First of all, being immobile on the track during a group workout is a great way to cause an extremely serious accident: at least two track riders have been paralyzed for life by crashing into stopped riders. This requires a spotter on the track to warn oncoming riders. Secondly, you put your right pedal front when wheel is turned right, apart from the obvious balance issue, putting left pedal out will cause shoe wheel overlap. Etc.

I'm thinking about being able to safely bunnyhop a crashed rider in front of you, brake more controllably to avoid hitting them altogether, the immense pain and damage done to the rider if they suffer a knee-injury or cramp up whilst riding fixed at speed etc...

      @@marekkrol5652 I wondered about that but single rear brake probably can't stop any faster than backpedalling a fixie - making it a moot point. TBH I haven't ridden fixed in about 6 years though.

    • @geoff5623
      @geoff5623 Před 2 lety +1

      in most cases, your hands wouldn't be in position to make use of the brakes readily if you had them, and you need a reasonably firm and steady grip on your bars to maintain your line.
      If there's a crash that you would even be able to avoid, the crashed riders will slide down the track so you can go up to avoid them.
      As mentioned in this video, it takes practice to be able to ride out of the saddle in the corners (how far your bike leans, and the feeling of being pushed down on to your bike is disconcerting for a while) - attempting a bunny hop on the track could be disastrous.
