I related hard to Irvin's story 🥺 I always knew growing up that my parents and I were immigrants, but I didn't know what that meant for myself and my future. Towards the end of my high school freshman year, all my friends started talking about getting summer jobs and that's when reality hit me that I was limited in the things I could do unlike my peers 😮‍💨 I felt that anger, resentment and frustration that Irvin mentions. I couldn't understand why my parents thought the US was a better opportunity for me when i couldn't even get into college without papers. I started thinking the same and thought, "What is all this for I'm doomed!" But similar to Irvin, that was the year DACA was announced. I remember the tears in my moms face and the shock and excitement on my dad's. My dad got on my application ASAP, and he didn't care what he had to pay they were gonna make sure they got me on DACA.

The DACA story touched my heart bc when I tried to become a clinical psychologist, even shortly after daca, I was told it wasn’t realistic considering I couldn’t afford it and didn’t qualify for most scholarships ONLY due to my status. This came from a counselor and led to me changing my entire path. I don’t regret it but it hurts to know that this is the standard for how Latinos are treated in higher education. Still, I’m so happy to hear people like you guys chose to keep fighting and spreading this message!

I was very grateful to have my friend who was also in grad school (she went to UCLA & I went to USC) & we supported each other through our grad school journey! I had counselors, including a Latina counselor at one point, tell me something similar -- that not many Latinos take school seriously yet alone graduate. This was one of the most relatable stories that has been on this podcast for me. Irvin’s DACA story was similar to mine experience. My school counselor also told me not to shot high because I didn’t have papers. After years of working hard and being one of the top students of my high school, to hear her say that I had no future was hard. She said I wouldn’t have the money to pay for college. My mom was there and told her to kick rocks 🤣 that I would go to college no matter what. I graduated with a bachelors degree with a full ride scholarship. Now, I work as an immigration paralegal helping families with their immigration matters. Next it’s law school to help our people in the community.

STEM degrees can be life changing. My husband is an Engineer and I am an accountant as first gen, I feel the struggles they talked about. I love seeing first gen and Latinos pursuing higher education. Especially in a career as challenging as Medicine. I hope they continue to excel in their careers and wish them continued greatness. Also something no one talks about is how to navigate higher income with taxes, retirement, insurance etc. I have had to learn personal finance by myself. That even though the paycheck is great how can I allocate my money to taxes, retirement, investing ( mutual funds etc), health insurance etc. I see so many people make great incomes but spend all their money in the mamalona, lavish parties etc and have no money in investing, retirement etc.

I love hearing their story and what is it that motivates them to keep going! They are doing it for US 🇲🇽✊🏼 and Sebas is right when he said they are the Trail Blazers and they will inspire soo many generations to come. Irving’s answer to why he wants to work ER is soo beautiful! I know that in CA undocumented people were only eligible for emergency services but this year that changed and they are now entitled to full scope services if eligible for Medical. Working in the eligibility world people don’t understand what a difference it’s makes in our community! Some people can’t afford to go to the doctor regularly and now they are able to! Love this episode is probably one of my favorite ❤

🎉🎉🎉 Thank you for in inviting this foos and hear their story… it total hits you not having a social.. I graduated from Engineering and it sucked I couldn’t work in my field once I had earned my BS degree and when all of your graduating class was getting jobs little by little (bc in a tough economy back in 2008) you do get into all that mentally all this for what?
But you got to keep pushing no matter what..

Thank you so much for having them! Iriving is so relatable to me.. DACA! first generation ! Having your high school “counselors” telling you to find a new dream !!! I went through that too and I’m sure countless others have as well. Thank you La Plática for giving these men a platform to share their stories. I am so proud of them.

Love this! And what you guys are doing with LA Plática! We need more stories like these. As a daughter of immigrant parents this hits deep. As a First generation student who also went to CSUN I was always so proud of how far I got , but wasn't completely satisfied because I felt like I didn't fit in. So motivating and que viva la raza.❤🎉 So motivational

Damn , it was the way Sebas talked down to Josh that made this episode hard to watch !
Instead of taking over the questions he wanted to watch him struggle , not a real one.
