- This DIY applies to anyone with a BMW based GM 5L40E transmission found in many BMW's (3 Series, 5 Series, Z Series, X Series).
The particular vehicle is a 2006 330CI ZHP. It began with a jerky downshift/upshift. Quickly that transitioned to a cog light with exclamation mark showing where it would normally have "D". Upon parking the car and shutting it off, it would not start or crank again.
Waiting a few hours, the vehicle displayed "S" where it would normally show P, and still no crank or starting. Upon further investigation, Fuse #30 was burned, and even replacing the fuse led to it continue to burn out.
This led to the conclusion it most likely was a neutral safety switch, after scanning the transmission module it showed "transmission switch failure".
The part for the GM 5L40E Neutral Safety switch for this vehicle is 24357532668.
You will also need a new filter and gasket kit, 24117557070.
Quick Steps to do the job:
1. Drain Transmission from fill plug first, then drain plug
2. Remove drain pan bolts, remove filter.
3. Remove Valve Body from Transmission Housing
4. With a thin punch, tap out 2 dowel pins holding selector shaft
5. Remove old shaft seal gasket
6. Replace neutral safety switch, and install next to shaft detent lever
7. Replace and install new shaft seal gasket
8. Install dowel pins
9. Align Neutral Safety Switch, shaft detent lever, and valve link together
10. Install fasteners back to valve body. Torque to 11Nm
11. Connect electrical connectors
12. Install transmission pan, and torque bolts to 11Nm
13. Install drain plug, torque to 18Nm
14. Fill with engine cold, transmission fluid until it starts dripping out
15. Close fill plug, start car, and monitor transmission temperature until it reaches 30C. Monitor with IR Gun the pan, or use OBD reader to monitor temperatures
16. Cycle through P, N, R, D several times during this sequence.
17. When 30C is reached in transmission, turn engine off, remove fill plug. If temperature is between 30-50C no fluid should be coming out.
18. Place car in Neutral, start engine again
19. Continue filling with ATF fluid (Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic ATF is what was used in the video) until fluid drips out again.
20. Close fill plug, and you're done with the filling procedure. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
thanks for this video. Your right, not much info out on this.
You did a great job with this! Your narriations were very helpful to say the least! Thanks to your wife/helper as well.
can you share where you got your instructions from and was a fee involved? How much was the switch? Was it o.e.m.? where purchased? dealer? what was trans fluid? Dec 6 or malice? what was sleeve part , number and name? can you link this information to your video for future references.
good job ! it was better if you open your valve body and solenoids to clean all off it, there is a lot of dirt inside , there are also two mettalic filters inside to clean
excellent content, I have to do the same with my transmission. One question, did you disconnect the battery before starting to disassemble the electronic part of the transmission? thank you
Yea I recommend it's good practice to do so
PLEASE HELP OR ADVISE : I have problem with my e46 325i /2001
1-Battery light is on
2-transmission faulty light is on
3- I hear a bang when switching from reverse to drive
When I start the car and see this sign faulty transmission , the car can drive on reverse and other gears except for first gear.
If I start the car and sign does not show on dashboard, the car only drives on first gear 35 Km speed max.
Took it to many mechanics and nobody could fix it.
First guy said he fixed alternator and reprogrammed ECM , The second told me to check and change Positon switch which I did today and still problem not fixed .Now they are saying its the alternator which the first guy fixed.
I checked the battery its giving 12.4 V and when car started and I hit Benzin pedal it goes up to 13.9-14 Volt .
What if it don’t go in reverse and u got a code of p0700
Hi, does the neuyral switch fuse is on the engine bay. And its in the black box that holds 5fuses all in one box.
I'm not sure I understand
So I read your description, have the same ‘s’ problem .. but all fuses have been checked and none have been burnt out.. is there another reason why/how this could happen?
Even if the fuse isn't burned doesn't mean the neutral safety switch isn't bad. I would say if you can't crank, and you're stuck in s, there's a good chance it's this.
Just make sure you buy the correct switch for your transmission (zf or gm)
@@Lefteris7 I’ve just got a diagnosis and it’s not showing any codes regarding the safety switch .. and are they known to just stop working out the blue.. I started it yesterday morning.. I noticed side view mirror switch was disconnected, reconnected it and that’s when the car stopped starting. It was cranking at first then stopped
What causes you to change it? i am having a problem My gear is stuck in position s. Even if I move the gear lever to any position The display screen will always show the position s. Is it because this one is broken?
The part I replaced in this video is most likely the culprit. As I share in the video I took had "s" displayed in every position and car wouldn't start or engage a gear.
What happens is the car thinks it's not in park/neutral to start
I'm having the same issue what's the part number and where can I get it?
@@damionhannam2745 please read the description. You need to confirm which transmission you have first as the GM and ZF are different
I have the gm series
@@damionhannam2745 great so follow the video and reference the part # in the description
Hi,
