For a player that's being paid as if he is elite, he should be that much better in the playoffs and carrying the team. And year after year after year, he has not done it. Same with Matthews and Nylander. But as long as they're all making over $10M a year, it's all good. No need for a top pairing d-man or an elite goalie.

You guys just don't get it! They don't have to win the Marner trade. They can trade him for picks and it is irrelevant! Boston lost the Joe Thornton trade on paper, but the cap space they freed up allowed them to sign their juggernaut captain, Zdeno Chara, who brought them a cup! The cap space Mitch frees up can allow Toronto to go get a Norris caliber defenseman, which is what they need. Sorry, Morgan Rielly is not it!

Between you and these guys who don't get it, one of them is talking to insiders in the Leafs organization about what they plan to do... it's not you.
The Leafs organization is simply not serious about contending. That's the bottom line. Their sole focus is hanging on to all their beloved Core 4 players and having good regular seasons. They don't care if they're soft. They want their Core to be comfortable. Who cares if they don't raise their level in the playoffs when you get 60+ goals from Matthews and almost 100 points from Marner in the regular season? That's this team's Stanley Cup. It's pathetic.
All the while, Edmonton is showing them how it's done with their elite players raising their games to get them to finals.

There is no "Win when they don't expect it" with this group. This group is 1st round exit upside year in and year out. They aren't good enough. Marner could potentially when a cup with a team that has three rock crusher lines and one dainty power play or PK line
It's like Steve says, running it back makes perfect corporate, soul-less, AI-level sense. The team is profitable, so keeping it the same is a win for the corporation that benefits from that profit.
You better add Willy "oneway" Nylander to that list too because he's just as guilty of being out of place as the other two.
How many teams evaluates Marner’s value somewhat closely to Toronto’s evaluation of him (the contract) ?
That’s the determining factor.
Berube was brought in to make Marner a playoff performer. Marner will score well over 100 points in the regular season and will find a team willing to pay him 11+ for multiple years as the rising cap will bring more 10+ salaries. (It may be Toronto)
There is no possible way the Leafs get players for Marner that allows them to say they won the trade. The free cap space is the "win".
I am a big fan of marner and I own his jersey. BUT
Marner played an important role during the Knights' 2016 playoff run, resulting in the team winning the OHL Championship. He led the playoffs in scoring and with 44 points in 18 games and was awarded the Wayne Gretzky 99 Award as playoff MVP. Marner helped lead the Knights in winning the 2016 Memorial Cup.
That’s what the article states but funny enough max Domi was captain of that team and they won. Now after the 23/24 playoffs who would you say is worth it? 1 year 3mil for Domi or marner making 10.9mil a year?

Marnee would do great in a southern US team like Tampa or Nashville. I feel he would be a great floor raiser and could be more easily shelterrd both on and off the ice as those teams are loaded full of defensively responsible forwards.

Completely agree with Steve. They clearly indicated big changes are coming. Coaching style coming in is a good bellwether with type of player signed/retained.

Even if the Leafs let Marner walk, it's a good move for the Leafs. Getting that kind of cap relief will ultimately help. Obviously, it's better to get a return but letting him walk instead of re-signing him for another $11m is a plus.
Marner is a driver on the PP and has amazing puck moving skills and is an amazing 1B with Matthews
What do you mean it's near impossible to trade a player who:
1. Cannot play to level of his contract in tight-checking style games (i.e. the playoffs)...
2. Has a contract signed by a GM & a team President who had a great idea BEFORE Covid hit, but then they refused to adjust when it became evident that the ''sign long-term to keep talent'' strategy didn't work...
3. Has a NTC and is salivating the chance to test free-agency after another full season of playing with Matthews, Nylander and/or Tavares for the bulk of this season...
4. Has no intention of ''doing a favour'' for Toronto by waiving his NTC in a contract season!

This is the downside of having ownership be a corporate entity with initials. The Leafs are profitable right now. If they're profitable, why mess with the formula by trading away an asset? They fired the coach because fans don't care about a coach and that enables them to claim they did something. There are fans who love Mitch, so the profit-focuses analysis will tell them to keep him. And since the initials don't care if you win, they will keep him.
Marner will be a Leaf. He will most likely be extended as JT's money will come off the books next year. For sure every team in the NHL is low balling the Leafs regarding a Marner trade because it's the Leafs. Give it up Steve, your dream of a Marner trade will not happen. I want to see what Berube can do with Mitch and the other top stars on the team.
The leafs are most likely only getting 0.80 cents on the dollar for a Marner trade. If they keep Marner and decide to trade him during the season his value diminishes more or they just lose him as a Ufa. Its a simple process that happens all the time.
There is a good trade out there it's called cap space... u get rid of a good player puts up points great, but the management has to come to terms with the fact he's going to do well.somewhere else. The mix of.players and amount they all make does not work in Toronto. So u trade marner for 11 mill cap space to spend on 2 or 3 good to fill out the roster properly. That's the winning trade.

Treliving has to make a deal for Marner because he can't risk having another one of his top players go to Free Agency like Johnny Gaudreau. If Marner doesn't get traded, he needs to sign him to a contract with an even greedier raise.

You gotta love an organization choosing not to trade him because they "fear he will thrive" somewhere else. That's some "if I can't have her nobody can" level logic. Sure, he's not working out here, but we're damn sure not going to let him work out somewhere else.
Every team needs a grinder on the top line. Bozak, Kadri, Bunting, Hyman, Domi, Bertuzzi those have been our options. How many good key forwards has Toronto traded to win the cup? Domi and Bert we have now, they need to be resigned. Bunting should never have been traded.
Domi and bertuzzi both took a while to get going but once they did that 1st line with Matthew’s Domi and bertuzzi was dangerous and it felt like a real playoff line.

And honestly, no I don't see many scenarios where that happens. You could spend that cap on 3 more players and all of them combined wouldn't give you the same value Mitch brings.
Sure, trading him for an elite defenseman would potentially make the team better, but we don't live in an EA Sports Franchise Mode fairy tale.

Between the possibility of Marner simply saying no to a trade & the rest of the leagues unwillingness to invest 11mill in this player specifically. I've been saying it for years now, we shoulda kept Kadri instead of signing JT. Coulda rolled with Matthews and Kadri down the middle for all these years. Instead of paying 11 mil per for a second line center who has now become a very good 3C or 2LW. Dont get me wrong, i love JT, hes been great for us. A point per game pretty well his whole time in Toronto, but hes not 11 mil per season good, considering Kadri was a big part of that Cup winning Avs team and went to Calgary for like 7 Mil..

Marner staying is like Treleving saying he learned nothing from the Gaudreau situation in Calgary. Dangle's Shanahan artificial intelligence comment was so accurate. Adam Wylde going on about the money Shanahan and Treleving make is a completely pointless but if anything Adam, Shanahan would stay. Ownership would view firing him and paying him to sit at home as a waste of resource.
The only changes in Toronto next season will be the new coach and a few depth signings/trades. Maybe the Leafs will make it to the second round next season, probably not. Dangles will be chugging Pepto during his live streams by the all star break.
Beautiful...keep him...have a great regular season...and next spring we'll have yet ANOTHER laugh at this sad-sack team when they bow out...I can't wait. Your coach is the only gamer on this team (ok, and Matthew Knies).

Toronto should not move any of the core four. The coach and manager will be key this upcoming season. Build from the minors and see what happens with the inspiration factor from the new coach. Shanahan is the one who’s time should be up.

The Leafs should have traded Marner last year before the no trade clause kicked in. That would have been the smart move, but the Leafs choose to run it back yet again. They ran it back just to realize that it doesn't work again. If they run it back one more year, the Leafs will see it still doesn't work next April. The Leafs are rudderless, lost and confused. If they don't bite the bullet this summer, the Leafs need to fire the upper management, because they are unable to do the job.
I'm not a Mitch Marner ad advocate but he has more points than any of the big 4 in the playoffs he's a steady player l.Austin Matthews needed one goal in 3 games to hit the 70 Mark and in Mathews style, couldn't do it. and then he got a cold in the playoffs that's the guy you want to keep? Ok
Why do we keep highlighting individual players in TEAM sports? That's what happened in AM34, when the team missed 70 goals. The coach kept highlighting individual players and promoting disruption. Let the new coach tune in for the new season.
Call me crazy. The most valuable thing for marner is cap space. If they cant dump him to Columbus for 0% retained they should let him walk. Which makes this year a loss. But if they can only find teams willing to take him with retention than whats the point. Paying 5 mil for no marner? Idk

I think the problem is he is paid to much. They won’t be able to shift him for the same value. And Marner can just say no. The leafs are likely stuck with him, I would also say “if you want to stay you are getting less”.

I’ve said it all along. Marner is not going anywhere ! Yet.
Once we calm down. It starts to make sense to wait one more year. Mitch in his contract year should be even better than most and Tavares comes off the books next year and we can deal with it than if need be. They missed out on selling high on Nylander.
Nylander has been the most consistent playoff performer for the leafs.

Yes, they made a poor trade for Kadri, and even worse they let Hyman walk - so they need to be smarter with Marner, but they need to move ahead and be smarter - not get paralyzed
Hyman is benefiting from playing with two of the best players in the NHL, and not Marner and Mathews. Hyman was average at best here and nothing would have changed had he stayed. But you're spot on with the Kadri assessment.
I would tell his agent we plan on healthy scratching him all season so he is well rested for the playoffs
Get rid of Nylander. Marner plays so much better with matthews and plays on the penalty kill and will get ya 80-90 points and help matthews get to 50-60 goals a year
If the Leafs are not willing to give him 8 years at the money he will be demanding, and the Leafs can't afford that, I can't see him staying. That 8th year will very crucial (at super big bucks) when he turns 35. Look through the trees and see the forrest.

More often than not the end up moving. In this video Kadri had it and used it and still got flipped. He has the right to say no and we should respect it but it's not a guarantee
