  • In this video we discuss the fascinating and unusual homes we ALMOST purchased when we spent 12 months trying to buy a flat in England. These two properties are both in Gloucestershire, and are examples of properties initially built for another purpose which are then converted into domestic dwellings. Have YOU ever considered buying a building to convert into a home? What type of place would you like to buy?

We also watch some of those shows, Dara and Ian. Always thought I'd like to redo an old church! We enjoyed seeing the two that got away. Both were unique and in lovely towns. The second was beautiful along the river and lake. Loved the tour! We now live in a beautiful home (modern) with a lovely view of Lake Superior. It's right below a wonderfully restored barn/home, that was the first place my mother lived almost 100 years ago when she first came to the area. First converted then, but updated many times since! Enjoyed your video.

I go to lots of different buildings as a delivery driver. Old mills. This one I’m thinking of has a lake with swans in it. The other day I went to the flats in Gloucester docks. It still has the pulleys and cogs to pull the heavy items up and down the warehouse. There is a lady In Tewksbury who lives in the old Police station. Before opening the door she looks through the grate to see who is there. A gentleman lives in a house that mentioned in the doomsday book.
    Great film.

Thank you so much! Your job sounds fascinating. It would be really interesting to see all those interesting homes! Did you have to deal with all the terrible flooding around Tewksbury? We love going to visit the Abbey there! I recently discovered Gloucester docs, and that is a great area!
Living in an old police station would be unique. I had dreams of making it an Airbnb when we weren't living there. It would be fun to decorate with old police memorabilia 😉

Very pretty. We have wool churches a plenty in East Anglia. The weaving industry in East Anglia was not mechanised. The economy of England was based on wool, back in the day. Worsted was woven in Worstead, one of the oldest pieces of legislation held in the Palace of Westminster relates to weaving and the taking of apprenticeship in Worsted weaving. Due to repeated outbreaks of the bubonic plague, it was hit very badly so never grew to the status of a Town. The sheep that fed the industry are no longer with us. Leicestershire long wool or Lincolnshire long wool are the nearest that survive. If only the walls could talk, what tales they would tell.

I absolutely LOVE shows that are about people restoring old buildings, I admire the imagination of those people who take those projects on. I think it's sad when I see old abandoned buildings, there's nothing romantic to me about them. When travelling I do deliberately book accomodation that is a repurposed old building, some are simple like a harbour master's house to more elaborate hotels. One I stayed in Sydney had been a department store built quite lavishly in the 1920s, complete with lots of marble and grand staircases. all of that was preserved on the the lower floors and then more modern hotel rooms upstairs.

Dana. We have plenty of old rejuvenated police stations and houses. Up to the 70’s the police lived in “company” houses, every village had at least one. In my home village of Pontyclun the Police House was on the main road, just a few doors from my gran. The houses had a blue enamel sign with “Glamorgan Constabulary” in white. In a time when telephones were rare in houses, they were one of the few with a telephone line. Our Police House was manned by PC Doyle, his wife and two very pretty daughters. We knew him as either Constable to his face or amongst us lads as Copper Doyle. He was a formidable tall gent, an ex-guardsman, he always wore his deep blue cape in bad weather, reputedly if he couldn’t catch you he’d flick his cape at you! As kids we would often call in when we had found things like purses and keys. Never felt scared of the police, they were just locals to us kids, his younger daughter, Jennifer, was a few years above us in primary school. His backroom was our local police station. A senior manager of mine bought an old police house in the Cardiff suburbs and called his new home “Copper’s End”.

There is something really appealing about living in those smaller villages. We used to watch those house reno shows and had dreams. There are some lovely old houses around here from the 50s and 60s on quarter acre blocks. But nowadays they are bought, for a million or two, knocked down and then 3 or 4 town houses are built. Knocker downers, investment properties, go for more than an older house bought to live in - they're usually renos. Suburbs like ours used to be all single dwelling quarter acre blocks. Now every second block is between 3 and 6 townhouses. 4 bedder at the front with 2 or 3 two or three bedders at the back. Medium density housing is about the only way we can cope with population growth - even though the sprawl here is continuing at a high rate.

I am moving back there in 2 weeks and this video reminds me of how beautiful it is in this area. Am moving back in with my parents but might buy a small flat/house either this area or Cheltenham. My sister lives in Leckhampton aswell so will be nice and close. Thanks for the video it was lovely!

I'm excited that you get to come back to England. The Stroud area has so many nice places, and Cheltenham is of course a place we love! I'll link to my Cheltenham video below in case you haven't seen it. I also did a nice little vlog of Painswick if you are interested. Cheers for watching and commenting! Dara

These two areas are very interesting and I have to say St Mary's Church is my favorite...those stained glass windows are amazing as is the history of the church...I am a firm believer things happen for a reason, and that you will wind up where you're supposed to be...although these two got away, they were not meant to be and you are where you're supposed to be! Great video Dara! Lovely places!

For the past few years we have stayed different length of time each summer. For visa reasons I can't stay longer than six months, but for tax reasons it's really better to only stay three or four months. It really depends on your personal situation, and if you own a home in England And if you are still working. Lots of factors involved! My best advice is to talk to a tax accountant in England. Have you actually had a proper drive round Cheltenham ?
Dr Alice Robert’s officially named Cheltenham the best Georgian town in the UK , I have built quite a few house on the Park in Cheltenham and refurbished a few Georgian mansions for various builders and if I won the lottery the Park is where I would love to live
Cheltenham has its own crescent not quite matching Bath but because of the surrounding buildings in my opinion is much more historically important

I pass the old police station in Fairford nearly every day, I remember when it was manned by actual police! I think you made the right call not choosing that house, London Road is just a little too busy and it's only going to get busier because the Airforce have massive expansion plans, and intend to bring in a lot more people. You correctly call Fairford a town, so many visitors call it a village, it pleases me that you know the difference. You refer to the nearby airbase as an RAF base, you are right in that it is called RAF Fairford but it is technically a USAF base. All other USAF bases in England (mostly in Suffolk) also keep the RAF prefix. I'm ashamed to admit, I have never once been in Fairford church 😮Although, I have been in the old police station.
