- You get warned about things like this... but sometimes you let your guard down and people take advantage of a vulnerable time. Here is our story of what happened as soon as we arrived in Paris.

Thanks for watching! Dara
Very lucky that you managed to get away unscathed! The same thing happened to me in Paris a few years ago - after arriving at Gare du Nord, I walked to the nearest Metro station and whilst I was going up the stairs inside the station (with one suitcase in each hand), I felt my phone inside my pocket move. I put my hand on my phone, turned round and confronted the pickpocket (who calmly walked back down the stairs).
After that, I got on the platform, took the train which came and another incident happened! Whilst at a station with the train doors open, a man suddenly grabbed my lower leg and his accomplices were suddenly all around me, trying to help themselves to whatever was inside my pockets and then they all jumped off just before the train doors shut. Fortunately, I had by then put all my valuables in an inside zippered coat pocket.
For me, my learning experience was not to take the Paris Metro carrying lots of luggage to get to/from my hotel. Better to spend more and get a shuttle bus or a taxi.
I agree! I will never ride the subway with a ton of luggage again! Your story is very scary! I’m glad you weren’t hurt.
There is a lot of pickpockets in Paris and Barcelona they are not from Spain or France usually places like Albania. Just glad you are both safe and well and didn't get anything taken
Thank god you got away unscathed, fair play for having a go at them. Those people are despicable (almost as bad as politicians and central bankers). Sadly, I got robbed twice during a 2 week trip via Madrid airport, once leaving the airport and whilst travelling for the return flight, they got my wallet when I arrived, and my new phone on the way home. It was a nightmare waiting for emergency cash transfer over a bank holiday with only a few euros to get by. I've travelled through Europe 100 times, and only had this issue on that one trip.
Oh my goodness! Twice in one trip?! Both wallet AND new phone?! I would have come unglued!!!
@@MagentaOtterTravels It was a mare for sure, both incidents caused me a lot of stress to say the least. Glad to hear you're feeling a little better no, the fatigue could come and go for a good while. Take care
I’d always recommend travelling as light as possible. Excess luggage is more of a hindrance. Glad you made it out the other side tho. A lot of areas in France are no go areas these days unfortunately.
Travelling light is SO important! I'm usually really good at that, but this was an exceptional case... and therefore we definitely should have taken a taxi! Lesson learnt...
WOW!! So glad you guys came out of that safe and sound and all possessions still intact. Very scary - and Ian’s “rage” was certainly understandable! 😡👍
Understandable, but also dangerous! I hope he learned a lesson about not looking for trouble ;-)
DARA and IAN, you poor things. David and I have been to Paris on many occasions (my first visit was an 'exchange' with a French pupil, at the age of fourteen); and it does help to be able to pronounce French words, and to know a little schoolboy/girl French. What an awful first encounter: and with all that luggage. Thank goodness you met some of your fellow-citizens later, to provide comfort and 'koinonia'.
Ian and I are both horrid at pronouncing French... it's rather hopeless. But we had a fun time in Pairs, despite the pickpocket at the beginning at getting covid at the end... come to think of it, I think both of those nasty things happened in the metro! haha
People always think it's strange that I really dislike Paris but I've really never felt safe on the street there in the places tourists are likely to be found.
I've been there twice and I'll most certainly never go back.
I felt much safer in New York, London Istanbul or Prague when there was still a Czechoslovakia - especially at night.
On the other hand I'd love to go back to Bordeaux or parts of the French countryside.
I can understand how you feel. I love Paris, but in short trips. We spent time in some AMAZING small towns in Austria and France and Germany... videos forthcoming LOL... and in each of those, I LOVED being able to walk through the tiny, uncrowded streets at twilight and absorb the vibe. So peaceful and breathtakingly beautiful. It's like England... I love visiting London, but I think my heart is really most connected to the small places in the countryside.
Sacré blue! What a time you've had outside of the UK! Glad to hear it all worked out, but that is very scary.
Unfortunately, I only had time to edit the easy videos of the bad stuff... the complex travel vlogs of the wonderful stuff will take longer to edit and publish! haha
@@MagentaOtterTravels end on a good note!
Wow, that was a close call! One has to be eagle-eyed these days. A friend of my husband's was in France this summer on a bike tour and he lost his passport and his wallet to a thief. He figured that it happened when his backpack was being transported to the next hotel while he and his wife were on bikes. When I travel my passport and wallet do not leave my person ever. Apparently they spent two or three days at the American consulate trying to get things straightened out with emergency passports and money and whatever they needed to get through the rest of their trip. What a nightmare!
Yes, I am paranoid about losing my passport and wallet! I keep both VERY close to me at all times. I have a secure travel bag and am always in charge of all our passports ;-)
You two are so precious!! How Life does teach us the in's and out's of traveling in a foreign country. Thank you for the story, Dara and Ian. Say, are you feeling better, Dara?
Yes, I'm feeling human again and have my brain back, thank goodness! We did learn some important lessons that day. I am a big believer in traveling light and this is why! We didn't for that journey, and it was a problem. Also, Ian is now going to wear pockets with zippers when traveling in cities like this ;-)
OH NO!!!!!! Can’t wait to hear what happened 🤦🏻♀️
Oh no . OMG . Some people are just horrible. Glad both of you are ok . Travel is a adventure for sure but always have your wits about you .
Yes, I agree… so important to stay alert and don’t be distracted! AND don’t take loads of luggage into the metro!! 🤪
Oh no, sorry to hear of your awful experience. Well done, Ian for standing up to the pickpockets. I'm so glad to hear you guys safely got through this ordeal and could enjoy the rest of your day. 💕
It made for an interesting story to tell the folks at church ;-) I do NOT think Ian was wise to pick a fight with the guy, but he was very smart to yell loudly. That made them run away!
I am so sorry this happened to you, l can understand lan’s reaction, how dare these people think they can steal from others. It makes my blood boil. I hope you are recovering, Dara.
Ian can be a feisty little otter when he's provoked! But thankfully that is a very rare occurrence. I'm happy to report that we are both over covid and feeling so much better! Which is a good thing, because we have a lot to catch up on these days now that we are back in Texas!
I hadn’t realised that lan had succumbed as well but glad to hear that you are feeling better. Chin up and all that!
Don't make Ian angry. You won't like him when he's angry!
He can be a ferocious little otter! lol
I had a bad experience too when I was in Paris a few years ago, but nothing like yours - unfortunately Paris is known for this kind of thing, you really have to keep your wits about you in Paris. But glad you made it okay, and hope your'e feeling better today Dara! Thanks!
Yes, one must be vigilant on the subway in any big city. And having loads of luggage and being distracted is a recipe for disaster. Lesson learnt! Thanks for asking, I am feeling so much better!!!
That was close, I'm surprised you don't have fanny packs ! We had our " bum bag" when ever we went out in Spain or the Canary Islands
Ian has been a bit overconfident about pickpocket safety in the past. Lesson learned! He will only have pockets with the zippers from now on…
So sorry that happened to you...some folks tried to pickpocket us in Madrid - I felt so violated - caught it all on camera (especially after the fact - seeing how long they had been targeting us)
I can't believe you caught it on camera!! That's amazing! Is the video on your channel? I'll have to watch it!
@@MagentaOtterTravels it is ...its titled something like Almost Robbed in Madrid
OH MY GOODNESS!!! How scary! So thankful you both are safe! Travel days are always the most stressful this would have sent me over the edge! Thanks for sharing happy you made it to church and met new friends. 💖~Cara
Yes, church was the bright spot in that day! The people we met were a young couple in the middle of a 5 month adventure around Europe! They were very fun to talk to.
Oh no... but to be fair, I was so cautious in Marseille when I was there, the streets just didn't look... so safe to be honest. I am so sorry this happened to you guys :( :/
Yes, we have to be alert and always be smart travellers!!
Marseille can be very intimidating, I got followed by young people in a car, as I foolishly walked on the evening from the station to my hotel a mile or two away...thankfully, after that, I had a good stay.
Sorry to hear that. But that’s the one thing I warn everybody about is in Paris I had other peoples hands in my pockets more than my own hands were in my own pocket. And I also got in a physical altercation on the train just before Gare Du Nord stop, when I caught a guy putting his hand in my pocket. My take away from all of this is it’s best to get an Uber or a taxi.
It really is best to avoid crowds, and to be super alert at all times. My dear hubby is too cheap to use taxis or Uber, but this is case when we DEFINITELY should have, because we simply had too much stuff we were lugging around. We were easy marks!!
oh, man! thank goodness he sucked at it and you felt him. lol! Hopefully the rest of your Paris visit went much better (aside from the “viral” souvenir you brought home).
The trip had a rough beginning with the pickpocket and ending with the covid... but other than that it was wonderful!! Unfortunately, the fun videos will take longer to edit, so no clue when I'll finally get those published, lol!
Sorry you had to go through that in Paris. Sadly, Paris is notorious for that and so is Heathrow airport which is nicknamed Thiefrow airport. Zippered pockets is the way to go with flaps over them. Enjoy the rest of your travels and glad you got to the church.
Heathrow wasn't called "Thiefrow" because of pickpockets. It was because of poor security in the baggage handling area, and many baggage handlers were arrested. 23 in an undercover operation in 1987.
The church had special memories for us because we had visited there with our sons 12 years earlier, so we were glad we finally made it! And we made some lovely new friends along the way! But yes, Ian has bought some travel trousers with zippered pockets now! Good idea ;-)
Oh my! Another reason to travel light! I heard an airport employee say never send anything into the baggage hull that you expect to see again ...
That's pretty scary. My parents said they noticed a pair tagging them in Paris. Only time my dad felt uncomfortable in his travels.
Yes, it is SO important to stay alert so you can spot when people are watching you! But it is very scary to be targeted... I am glad your parents were alert and aware!
Oh no!! I'm really sorry you had to experience that! It's a really scary situation to be in and I'm glad Ian stood up to the pickpockets! It happened to us once in Paris; someone dropped a 'gold' ring and tried to misdirect us by saying it was ours. Nope!! Just upped the pace and walked faster! 😹 What a nightmare! I'm glad you guys are safe! 😻😻
You are smart to not fall for those tricks!! 👍
Thats crazy! Wow! Thanks for sharing your experience with us all all. So happy you are OK. Id have exactly the same reaction as Ian. Mark Bensette Aux Bois 🇨🇦.
It’s easy to be hotheaded in these situations where you feel so violated. However, it can also be a risky reaction!😳
So glad you got away without losing anything or coming to harm. Paris is notorious for this type of thing, and the thieves particularly target people who are distracted by juggling with too much luggage, studying street maps or trying to negotiate escalators or ticket barriers. You need eyes in the back of your head.
Yes, having too much luggage is a huge risk, and being distracted is a huge mistake! Bad combination!
A very bad experience! Thank goodness nothing was stolen. After I watched this I fell asleep and had a vivid dream about travelling with heavy bags and I lost one of them!
Oh no, sorry that my video is giving you nightmares!! We certainly learned a lesson about NOT taking lots of luggage into a subway system. And always being very alert. Oh, and Ian is not keeping valuables in open pockets anymore!!
@@MagentaOtterTravels I was once in the Philippines with my wife’s family and I was standing in a group of people watching the re-enactment of the Easter story. My wife had taken my wallet and put it in a safe place, but I had a mobile phone in my pocket and sure enough the hand of a small child must have reached in and taken it. I didn’t feel anything. Actually I didn’t care. It wasn’t a very expensive phone and if the sale of the phone would be of benefit of the family, then so be it!
@@AidanEyewitness that’s quite a story! I think someone robbing people whilst they watch an Easter presentation might get struck by lightning ⚡️
Aw sorry you were pickpocketed- I was pickpocketed many years ago in The Paris metro as well. Although in the aftermath I met the kindest lady who went out of her way to take me to the police station to report it! They are - I won’t use the word!
I'm sorry you were targeted also! But nice that in the midst of all the nastiness we still get to meet nice people along the way! ;-)
I’m glad you didn’t lose anything,I’ve never had any trouble in Paris or any big European cities, except Cologne once nice to see you’ve taken it in your stride.✌🏼
As a vlogger, when something bad happens... as long as you end up ok... it makes for a good video topic! haha
I'm sorry to hear about your unfortunate incident. Something you should look into,...I just purchased a pair of "pickpocket proof pants" from a company called Clothing Arts. They have a combination of button, zippered and secret pockets to hide your phone, wallet, and passport. They make pants for both men and women. They're not cheap at $114 a pair, but after hearing horror stories (like yours) about pick pockets, I had to take the plunge. Especially when I'm traveling to Paris in a couple of months. Take care!
Sounds like they might be a good investment! Also, it's always wise to NOT use the Paris Metro when your are overloaded with bags like we were. So much more sensible to take a taxi in that situation. Have a wonderful time in Paris! I still need to do my other vlogs from Paris ;-) Thanks for watching. Dara
You guys seem pretty upbeat so I figured you had a happier ending than us. Lori and I were in Seattle a few years ago and we got rolled. Directly from the airport without dropping off the bags at the hotel. We stopped for a bite to eat. When we came out to the car the doors were open. Trunk was open and all our stuff was gone. It was a nightmare cleaning up the mess because we had electronics with personal information that were taken along with all our other stuff. Not the best vacation ever. We didn't vlog it.
Oh my goodness, what an AWFUL start to a trip!!! Yes, it's important to keep your important stuff with you at all times. But that can be difficult to do! I'm often amazed by the full time vlogger couples who travel around the world nonstop... security and safety are a key part of their travel strategies.
@@MagentaOtterTravels yeah, it's no easy task. Our robbery occurred before we had drones... But we can't imagine the hardship now.
Very nice sharing my friend
I'm. sorry you went through this. Most of my travels have been alone and I have far too many stories of problems like this. The worst in France was on a train from Marseille to Lyon. I was drugged and the wallet I had under my shirt was taken. Luckily, I didn't have everything in that one. I hope the rest of the trip goes well.
You were DRUGGED?! Oh my heavens, that is HORRIBLE! I'm so glad you weren't badly injured! At the end of the day, stuff is replaceable.
Great video. Really liked watching. Thank you for sharing. Have a nice week 😊
Thanks so much! You too 💕
@@MagentaOtterTravels You're welcome my friend 😊
Pickpockets are a huge issue on the metro. I’m glad you caught him in the act. We had a similar experience in Rome on the metro, nothing was stolen, but it was a close call.
First of all, your channel name makes me smile. Thanks for stopping by! Yes, pickpockets are a FAR too common nuisance! I'm glad to hear that you were alert and managed to not be robbed. It's a powerful lesson on what to do (and not do) when traveling in big cities! Thanks again for your comment. Cheers! Dara
This is why I don’t go to Paris anymore. There’s too many hustlers who are aggressive towards tourist. It’s ridiculous.
I understand… Paris is a beautiful city, but there is a risky downside.
So many pickpocketers rely upon distracted tourists at airports, train, and metro stations, where one has to otherwise remain extra vigilant. Navigating a foreign city and its language it seems to me is hard enough, such that any cost savings which one rationalizes when taking public transportation (especially with one's partner and luggage!) is eclipsed by the trauma and costs of becoming victims to parasitic pickpockets which can in some cases turn to acts of violence including murder. Moreover, in many European cities a la Barcelona, Spain, pickpocketers are not incarcerated unless the victim has been robbed of at least 400 Euros. My lesson learned: Take cabs, not Metros! And, if you normally wear a watch or any flashy jewelry, don't, leave them home .
I totally agree with you. When I travel I never wear my diamond ring. It's the only real jewelry I have, and I always leave it at home. As for riding the metro, we will never do that again with luggage! That was a painful lesson learned!!
Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers! Dara
Oh man, glad you guys are safe!
Thanks! It was quite the travel day adventure!😬
Pleased to hear you are both feeling better!
Ah yes the joys of European travel. But it can happen almost anywhere except for maybe Japan 😂 I've seen pickpockets and thieves mark their potential victims in various metros around Europe - Paris, Rome and Las Rambla is Barcelona. They really know how to choose the most vulnerable - mostly tourists. We've been lucky so far. We managed to spot the obvious ones before they get close. But others look like kindly old grandfathers or business men in suits or mothers with babies. You really have to have your wits about you, but tourists, like us, can be distracted momentarily, then see ya later wallet. I was with my dear old parents in Rome in the early 2000s. They were wandering ahead of us about 10 metres when we saw a couple of women start moving in towards them. I shouted an oi, clear off, or anglo saxon words to that effect, and they wandered away. My poor olds were completely oblivious. Another old man in a trench coat and beret followed us around notre dame in Paris. Every time we turned around he seemed to find a piece of masonry fascinating. Back in the 90s in Rome you might be mobbed by groups of kids shoving newspapers at you. The creepiest one was when we were leaving a rural restaurant out in the bush in Tuscany. We had to walk a few hundred metres though some forest to our car. We were deadset certain we were being stalked by some bloke on a scooter. Michelle still says that guy was creepy.
Enjoy your travels everybody 😂😂😂
Wow you have a lot of stories… I love how observant you are! It’s definitely wise to stay alert 😉
@@MagentaOtterTravels Because I'm old 😂After a while people just say there there old fella have a glass of milk... 😂

Always leaves a nasty taste when this happens. I had three pickpocketing gangs target me on one evening in Madrid. Never had a problem in Paris though. Being vigilant is not always easy but I found that being loud if anything happens usually makes the B******* run.
Yes, being loud is better than picking a fight! Thankfully Ian yelled loudly and the guys did run away. Now we just need him to not lose his temper ;-)
Yes, like I said we've been rolled in the past and the emotional roller coaster you go on is pretty intense. Even to this day it's upsetting and reminds us of the time where we were robbed. It's the most violated we've ever felt and there are some things that we lost that had tremendous sentimental value that will never see again. We were super angry. Super sad super everything. That's why from that day forward we never let our items out of our site. When possible. People ask us why all my gear is on my back all the time? Well that's why.
That is truly awful. I usually have a pretty even temperament but things like this make my blood boil. Violated is a good way to describe it. We've both had a cars broke into, where a window was smashed and then things inside taken. Fortunately it's been many years since we've had such an experience and, just like you, we changed things that made it unlikely to happen again. This attempted pick pocketing was definitely a learning experience for me.
@@ians3586 Lori and I need to be more careful and your story will help us keep what is ours --- ours. Glad you're ok!
Rough day, Dara and Ian. The most important thing is that your both safe. The second most important thing is that you still had your wallet, Ian. If you had to stop the CC's, debit cards, and didn't have any cash, how could you have enjoyed the "French Cuisine?" 😕😕😋😋
Yes, it was a rough day, but we ended up safe and with our important stuff. And learned some important lessons. You'll be happy to know that a lot of French cuisine was consumed during our stay in Paris! lol
Yes, it definitely would have ruined our time in Paris. We're very fortunate that we were able to really enjoy our time there.
So sorry to hear this news.. Unfortunately, welcome to Paris... It's such a shame.
Our trip to Paris was FABULOUS! I will eventually be posting vlogs of the fun we had and the food we ate. So I hope you subscribe and stay tuned for that fun!
But unfortunately the Paris Metro was not my friend on this trip... the first day there we were pickpocketed, and by the end of the trip it gave me the covid virus to take home... sigh.

Yes, this nasty experience was a big learning opportunity! It's best to travel light and always be very alert. And it was stupid to travel on the metro with all that stuff... we definitely should have taken a taxi for that part of the trip!
@@MagentaOtterTravels Lesson learned. Thank you.🍁🍁🥰🥰
I got ripped off in Paris and French are just rude. And I got the wrong coffee at the cafe.... nightmare in Paris. Never again!!! I will never go to Europe, not even after my death.
It's a bit silly to judge the whole of Europe based on a negative experience in Paris.
What an awful experience! And in the city of love at that🥲
I know, right?! It is such a beautiful city. A shame that crowds breed this type of behaviour...
Glad you escaped unscathed. It must have been very unsettling at the time but I am glad to see you retained you positive attitude
It was scary... especially when Ian was about to have a fist fight with that hooligan!
