Aurora wrote this song after reading about a "murder" in the paper near her homeland. A man killed his wife / girlfriend out of love. She was seriously ill and suffered more every day. He released her from suffering. The song is sung from the perspective of the woman's ghost. She also makes it clear that she understands her husband. This is pure love. Maybe it was with the woman's consent (I hope so) or he made the decision on his own. No idea. But it was love. And this is her darkest Song.
You will only find this explanation of this song in one interview with her. It's not written anywhere else. And usually she doesn't explain her songs that specifically either, because she wants everyone to find their own story in them. This way songs stay interesting longer. That's why I also believe that this explanation was just an accident. It was also just a brief side note on a question asked, by the way.
She usually only says to the song it is a true tragic love story that doesn't end well.

That octave jump on the last '5, 4, 3, , 2, 1', is one of my favourite moments of the song. It is such a small musical detail on Aurora's part but it makes my spine tingle every time with how sparkling and effervescent it is. Just that one note sounds like someone who is trying to escape their fate, a last moment of panic and regret before it all ends. Her sensitivity and ear as a musician never ceases to amaze me.

Aurora is not only a gtreat singer but also a story teller! While most songwriters nowadays write about superficial and banal themes Aurora writes about things that are painful in everyday life. This song is about a poor man who kills his wife because he did not want her to experience all the pain that might come in life. Recently here in Norway a refugee mother killed her 3 children and herself. No one knows why she did this but most people believe that this is about mercy killing

I recommended this in your "Through the Eyes of a Child" video, and said I could do 20 more but didn't wanna leave a long comment, but since you did this one (and thank you for doing so!), here are a few more to consider... "The River," "The Seed" (great music video, no interpretation needed), "Queendom," "I Went Too Far," "Black Water Lilies," "Gentle Earthquakes," "Churchyard," "Winter Bird," "Warrior," "Running with the Wolves" -- shit imma gonna recommend every song on all three albums at this point lol. Aight I'm done; it's all excellent my dude. She's spectacular. And that's to say nothing of her covers. Everything she touches slaps.

Great list! I would like to note that her covers on P3 Live is especially impressive because of the circumstances. P3 Live is a radio show and the artists do an interview and get to sing one of their own song and do a cover, but they do not know in advance what song they will be covering and only get to know that less than an hour before they go on live. In that time the artist has to make an arrangement, memories the lyric as much as possible and rehearse a couple of time, and then they go on live. Aurora has covered Wrecking Ball, Believer, God Is A Woman and Det Hev Ei Rose Sprunge (a German Christmas song form 1599 sung in Norwegian) on P3 Live, and you can see she has notes in front of her with the lyrics.

Good thoughts. I read the comments and didn’t see see this stuff but I’m telling everyone. Hope it helps understand her. Here’s the story. She was bullied sometimes as a little girl in Norway for being autistic and spent all her free time in the forest with the animals. Her two older sisters were her best friends and protectors. They’re still with her. She was making up songs as soon as she could talk and started writing them at age 7. Until her late teens, she was terrified of performing but wanted to help people. To calm down, she would whisper the value of Pi into several hundred decimal places.

Man, I loved your reaction to this songs. Which in fact is a song that makes me cry each time. She's an amazing artist, like you said yourself. As a Norwegian, I can easily relate to any of her melodies and how it all sounds vocal wise as well. Sometimes less is more, and she's one of those that manage to impress in other ways than turning up the volume to show what she's capable of. Instead she seems to pay attention to the little details that others mightn't even have thought of in the first place. Which sounds just right, yet surprising, when it's put into action to create a certain atmosphere, - and I guess that's what makes her Aurora.

When doctors refuse to euthanize and someone love so much that they stop letting his wife suffer and she wants to, then what was sung in the song happens. Greater suffering for another. That was happening at the time in Aurora's homeland near her. Then she wrote this song. The wife is seriously ill, every day greater suffering, including the treatment, and the husband finally kills her. The song is sung from the perspective of the ghost of this woman. The woman knows that her husband loves her and did it out of grace. She is not angry with him.
The choice of title is also very well chosen and should therefore be questioned. Does this man really have to be called a murderer? He did not kill in cold blood for selfish motives. He has taken a great loss so that someone else doesn't have to suffer. He's taking prison and knowing that it was him. Can someone like that really be compared to someone who shoots people to get money or out of jealousy?

So many explanations. Her inspiration to write this song was a true story with a very similar horrible situation as she describes. A man killed his wife who was suffering from a lethal illness. Out of his neverending love for her. Maybe Aurora was hit in her gut with this image and hád to use it, as it is such a strong image. Who knows what meaning this song has to her, but as the story tells us, in the end the two are forever separated by his actions. She is now dead to him. Out of his love for her he maybe had to confess and so could have dropped 'the bomb' that instantly destroyed the relationship? Who knows.

One view is that he killed them ‘to save them from the awful things in life that come’.
