Anime News Network ain't the most trustworthy of sources. That said, the idea that merch ain't doing too well due to inflation and people going out seems a bit off. The post covid travel boom has leveled off and the lower end merch prices should be stabilizing due to China pumping out trash again. If anything, business in North America is likely down since anime fans are increasingly sensitive to rotten localizations and censorship, turning them off to new licensed series. A crash is likely to come but it ain't gonna be due to post COVID reopening.

Anime is always an oversaturated market. However, poor and inaccurate localization, to the point of rewriting characters, bad decision-making, Crunchyroll dropping Funimation content, removing comments, and poor marketing in the US are to blame. Crunchyroll has made many wrong moves in the past, and it's showing.
There are still some amazing anime out there. It's original content and usually carries great stories. It's a very flexible market and able to meet everyone's demands and tastes. It's just a matter of getting that information out there and fixing a damaged system that hinders it.

no the bigger problem is that good anime never gets more than 1 season and very popular anime series takes too long to release another season due to that studio having to make multiple different animes one after another nonstop.
People lose interest fast when you don't keep delivery them the same anime they love and watch other garbage anime, which in turn makes them lose interest in watching anime. They need to let studios complete an anime series if there is enough popularity instead of making fans wait 2 to 4+ years for another season for good shows.
