If your african pygmy hedgehog has very very dry skin or is in the process of quilling (losing it's baby quills and growing adult quills) I would suggest giving your hedgehog an oatmeal bath instead. Oatmeal has anti-inflammatory properties and can help relieve the discomfort that your hedgehog is feeling during the quilling process. It is also great for dry skin. Oatmeal baths can be given more often than a regular bath with shampoo/wash as it won't dry their skin out as much. If you are giving your hedgehog an oatmeal bath make sure to use sugar free and flavor free oatmeal. I didn't talk about it in this video since I didn't want it to get too long. That's a story for another day. ;)

What shampoos can you use for your hedgehog?
1. Baby shampoo-The most popular baby shampoo for a hedgehog (and the only one I would recommend since I have tried it) is Aveeno Baby Shampoo. I used this one in the past but switched because I really didn't like the scent of it very much. It's still an ok product though.
2. A gentle and lightly scented puppy or kitten shampoo-Make sure that it has no anti flea/tick medication in it as the medication (or the amount of medication in it) may not be appropriate for a hedgehog. If your hedgehog has fleas, mites, or ticks please take them to the vet so they can prescribe something safe for your hedgehog. The shampoo I currently use for my hedgehog is Pet Promise Gentle Touch Natural Shampoo for puppies and kittens (it is a "soap free" shampoo).
3. Fragrance and soap free Aveeno body wash-I have never tried this one but it is highly recommended on Hedgehog Central forums.
Never use tea tree based shampoo/wash on your hedgehog as it is toxic to them. Always read the ingredient list first before trying out any product!

This is a fantastic video. I've seen too many where people are too rough with these sensitive animals. I like how you kept far away from his eyes & face while bathing, very good. Also the low water level, warm temperature & slow movements play a huge role in comforting the hog. Ah, mine is a bit like that. Pick him up with soft cloth or something like that, one he chills down, then use your hands to pick him up. handle him a bit every day so he gets used to you.
I do that, but he starts pooping all the time, like a way to make me put him back in his house, it's like a poop machine
Olivier Lopez I got mine from a breeder. He's grouchy when I wake him up but as soon as I wave some food (he loved mealworms) in his face he's fine. I can hold him and he doesn't quill me. It takes patience as they're not prone to trust humans so they take time. He'll come around. I promise :) try putting an old T-shirt that smells like you in there with him and then handle him holding that. That way he'll realise that it is a smell he recognises as not harmful to him and that doesn't pose any sort of threat to him at all. That's how I tamed mine and he's lovely once he's in my hands now. Hope that helps 😊

It's a little better now. When I hold mine for a couple of minutes it starts relaxing slowly until he unwraps hiw spiky ball and tries to walk away, and he doesn't smell as bad as when he was just 2 months old (it's 6 months old now) and doesn't cover everything in poop like he used to, but is still a little pooping machine and not very sociable.

My hedgehog has only been with me for less than a week, I think she's warming up to me but I am still a bit nervous holding her without gloves. How do you get a hedgehog to trust you more? I put my shirt into the cage already and I handle her for two hours from 7pm to 9pm. I usually have one hand in a glove and the other one no glove and feeding her.
