It's a young, inexperiened England squad, with overall limitations, but they've done well and restored pride in the national team. Yes, they had an easier path to the semi-finals than any of the other 3 teams. There have been long term problems with the style of football England play: lack of possession, lack of game management, lack of tactical sophistication. Plenty of heart, plenty of effort, good team spirit and lack of egos but not able to combine the individual abilities into a good enough system of play. It's a young, inexperiened England squad, with overall limitations, but they've done well and restored pride in the national team. Yes, they had an easier path to the semi-finals than any of the other 3 teams. There have been long term problems with the style of football England play: lack of possession, lack of game management, lack of tactical sophistication. Plenty of heart, plenty of effort, good team spirit and lack of egos but not able to combine the individual abilities into a good enough system of play. Above all a competent, level headed manager, who I am delighted for in restoring his football reputation fully after any fallout from the '96 penalty miss and being dismissed as manager at Middlesborough.
