    Good explanation.
    And for any new drivers watching this pay close attention. Some mega carriers your trainer/leader are in it for the money. They take a new person to make more miles which means more cash. The problem is they will push you to drive or work more than the 14 hours, using the split method. Be careful and know when YOU need the break.
    My trainer would push me to 16-17 hours days in a regular, then I couldn’t sleep when off because he was driving, and on his phone loudly, and blasting music, and the worse thing, running off the road onto rumble strips. That will keep you awake in the mountains of Utah at 0300.

      LOL! Thanks Ken! Our aim is to help the new drivers!! As for the company...Kevin's first fleet manager knew about the channel and he and his boss actually watched it and thought it was great. But that was many months ago. Since then, no one has said a word, good or bad. We've met a lot of drivers who told us they went to Werner because of our channel. Don't know if anyone at the company is aware of that. But, either way, we are so happy to document our experiences and help others!

    If you are loading or unloading, and they tell you they will call you when it is done, you are released from responsibility for the load. So you can go into sleeper and still be legal. If you log off duty, it can be questioned because you may not be free to leave the truck there so you are technically off duty. Sleper can be used if you can not leave the truck but not working.

    Dude, I always split my sleeper everyday. You do it, just right, You never have to worry about that thirty minute break crap either.

    Wow thank you. You explained it so well I finally understand now. I could have used this when I was waiting at a receiver for 3:30 hours and caused me to go into violation 🤦🏽‍♂️. Now I know better 👍

    There should be a check-box or other way to show that you plan to use the first break as split sleeper. It should automatically change the clock when you complete the first break so that it doesn't show you in violation but shows how many actual hours you have on the clock.

      Edge Connect, Werner’s ELD, you’ll automatically gain hours back while off duty for a minimum of 2 hours. You MUST remember to place your status to Sleeper birth when you finally shut down. I’d you don’t, you’ll be editing logs in the morning.

    You are slightly mistaken about sleeper birth provision rules
    You can log sleeper at the dock so long as you are not assisting with loading or unloading and you aren’t counting freight
    Also it is against the law to log off duty or sleep at a traffic jam or road closures unless you are pulled off the road and parked
    There are exemptions for this but if you get caught under questioning about doing this you will get a ticket

    I've used this before while driving and needing sleep late at night, pulled into a rest area, slept for 2.5 hours then got up felt rested and was good to drive. It's very useful.

    Great explanation but I have one question. Do you have to work a certain amount of hours on duty or driving before you are able to split ?

      No. As far as we understand it, you can split at any time.

    I thought you had to use the larger portion of the split time first.....
    So, for a 7-3 split, the 7 had to be used first.

    The split clock works well when say you start your day at 7am, deliver at 8am, but dont have your next load until 4pm a short distance away later that day. Can stop the 14 hour after the 8am to save the 7 or 8 hours in-between. Its really useful and easy to understand once you do it. Sounds confusing as hell

    A CHP officer stated, if u are sitting in the front seat your on duty or driving, if you are in the sleeper your in sleeper mode, even if your at a shippers or receivers. That came from a sgt at what I call the Hell Scale in Cali on 99. He said, that going off duty should never happen in a sleeper unless your actually out of the truck and that even at a shippers and receivers u can go into sleeper if that’s where u are, but not off duty unless out of truck. He said nothing is more suspicious to them than a ton off duty time for drivers in sleepers who barely leave the truck😂

      Thanks for the heads up for Hell Scale. :-))) If anticipating a possible two hour plus at a shipper it's a preemptive move to go "off duty" so you can split your clock. So many nuances in managing this HOS clock.

      Just say you got a motel near by how’s he going to prove or disprove that at the end of the day if the officer already met his quota he’ll let it slide if me hasn’t handed out his required amount of tickets he’ll find a way to give you one it’s based on the quota system avoid any bs on the last week of every month that’s when they prey on us drivers

    Great video! Just to clarify, if you started at 6:00 a.m on day one, and decide to take a 2-hour break to split your shift, then continue driving until you've used up your saved 2 hours to complete the 14-hour day, you theoretically could begin your shift at 6:00 a.m. on your 3rd day if you just stopped your 2nd day shift 2 hours earlier to allow your 3rd day shift to begin at 6:00 a.m. correct?

      Thank you! You are correct!
      Day 1 Start at 6am. Take a 2 hour off duty or sleeper to split the clock. Then drive out your time which would bring you to 10pm.
      Day 2am. Start at 8am (after your 10 hours off). If you work 14 hours you’ll end at 10pm and couldn’t start until 8am on day 3. If you only work 12 hours on day 2 then you can finish at 8pm and could start at 6am on Day 3.
      But…stay aware of how crossing time zones might affect this. 😉

    When you push the split it tells you how many hours you have if u you use it but it has to be done earlier in shift.

    I'm not splitting anything. Once I start my clock they got me for up to 14 hours then I'm done for the day .

    What if you take that break more then 2 hours , lets say you turn to off duty for 4 hours . Is it mean that 4 hours will be added at the end of this 14 hours shift ?

    The information is very detailed and correct until you got to the end part(next day)
    You don’t have to take a straight 10 anywhere . U can continue to take 8 2 splits everyday until your 70 is out according to my experience understanding.

    Man with my trainer I did 10-11 straight drive then sleeper, repeat. Now I'm on my first load and it's a high priority load. I'm currently going to be late because I have no clue how the split works

    Sorry, but there was no explanation of how & when you get time back or how much time you get back after completing a split-sleeper break (min 7 in sleeper berth status). Not sure why you would have wait to start at 0800, after completing the second part of split-sleeper break at 0300.

      This was based on Kevin always taking a 10 hour break between work days. But you are correct, you can work the split differently. There will be another video coming...

    I’m with Werner now and I do split my clock and receive the 14 hr warning but the next day I get another message saying I have a written warning. Only happened twice but I’m tryna figure it out lol

    I had a situation where I spent 3 hrs waiting on the sleeper berth to get unloaded. After those 3 hours they started unloading. The clock gave me that time back to keep driving. I drove home and did my 34 hours reset. Company gave a violation for that even though I still had time left before I went off duty.

    Hi,
    I know how to use the split sleeper berth 2-8, but can it be done the other way around after running out of HOS?
    Say that I already drove 11 hrs and usually for me to get another 11 hrs of dive time, I need to be off 10 hrs, but if I only get into sleeper berth for 8 hrs, will I get any driving hours back? And after driving, let's say 4 hrs, I get into the sleeper berth for 2 hrs. Does that work?

      We’re not authorities in the matter. But our understanding is that if you used the 11 hours you need to take 10 rest. The split only works on a fresh 11 hours. But check with fmcsa.

      The other think you should get sooner rather than later is the headset. Allows you to talk on phone while driving. Staying connected is so important when you go solo!!

    Can i do it backwards ,like take an 8 hours break and then drive what was left of my 14 and then rest 2 to get the other rest of the 14.

    Is it big trouble if I skip my 30 minute break? I lost track of time and tried finding a legal place to park but ended parking on a low traffic on ramp that I believe was illegal in Tennessee.

      Yes. Not sure what consequences are with your company, but if DOT checks your logs you will be in violation. Not sure what consequences that would have it how far back they check. Be sure to plan in your 30 to stay compliant. Please let us know if there is a follow-up. Hopefully not. 🤞🍀🤞🍀🤞🍀

    Yes if you start that spilt early in the day if you wait to long that slit is no good your 14 will still run out.

    I have two appointments in the same city tomorrow, one at 5am and the other at 2pm. Is it possible to extend my 14 hour clock by more than 3 hours, or is it limited to 3? Basically, is there a maximum number of hours you can extend it by going off duty?

      It’s difficult and we’re not experts…our understanding is that you can split your 10 hour rest time 3/7 or 2/8 and take them in either order like 3/7 or 7/3. You can then use the rest of your 14 hour after the first break. The thing to watch for is that you only get back the hours from before the first break. So to get a full 14 back you need to take a 10. It’s confusing but hope it helps.

      Depends on the job you get. Kevin never does. It’s called ‘no touch freight.’ But there are jobs where drivers unload. Those are called ‘touch’ freight…like some food deliveries for example. So it’s up to you to choose the job you’ll take.

    I was splitting my hours and exeded my 14 hours clock and got a warning in Colorado. Officer said if it would of been that same day he could of put me out of service. Was he wrong? What should we do in that case?

      😳😳😳 Not sure how that would have worked. Check with your company. There should be someone who knows all details of DOT compliance and should be able to figure it out and explain it properly.

      Yes. It’s technically part of the sleeper berth provision. But…that provision changed in September 2020 and makes this ‘splitting or pausing’ of the 14 possible, as long as the first pause is a minimum of 2 hours and you take 10 hours as the second part. The 2/8 and 7/3 doesn’t reset the 14. This all gets very complicated for new drivers. We’re hoping this illuminates this part of it. Another video could go into the sleeper berth provisions in more detail. Thanks for your comment!

      You are in violation of DOT rules. Not sure how it would transpire. Good question! At Werner the ELD starts talking and getting very pushy about staying compliant. ;-))
      Seems to us that violations are registered and you can get fined. Especially if you get pulled over for something or at a weigh station or …really bad…in an accident. The ELD keeps track. Your CDL in danger.

    My situation is I drove 9 hours I got to the shipper and waited 3 hours which I went sleeper birth then I split and drove about 30 min to a stop then took my 10 reset so my ? Is regardless of the 24 hours in a day does the split count as well regardless of the 24 hours in a day?

      The split if it’s more than two hours won’t count against your 14 hour clock. The 10 hour break you started at truck stop will give you back all your hours (14 hour day). If you’d only rested 7 hours then you would have started out with the 9 hours you had before your three hour break.
      It does get very confusing. But we hope this helped.

    It seams to me that you could use to 2 hour break to pivot to an 8 hour sleeper birth for your 10 hour combined split. I think you might be wrong about needing a 10 hour at the end of your clock.
    However, the 8 hour sleeper will not give you a full 11 hours to drive since you are running as split sleeper.
    Oh what a head ache!

    I started my clock at 2 am then drove 4 hrs to drop off load then I’m now at shippers and been off duty for 3 hrs so until what time will my 14 hr clock be up ??

    How u do it if u do a job in morning from 7 to 9:30 then clock out and got another loaf at 4pm same day????

      Hey there! Thanks for watching! You could stay on the clock for the whole day, on or off duty. Or you could choose to split your clock, starting with the 7 or 8 hour segment. But then be sure to go on sleeper for 3 or 2 hours when you finish the second segment. Good luck! It can be confusing, but you'll get the hang of it!!!

      No. That can end up getting crazy!!!! Kevin tends to keep pretty regular start time of 6am, though it’s not always possible. Doing exactly only 10 is not required and can quickly lead to craziness and sleep deprivation. But…it’s everyone’s choice.

    What about owner operator office is in the truck your unload your 300 miles from home can you of duty your eld and drive home your truck and trailer becomes your car!

      We don't know about owner operators from personal experience. You can 'personal conveyance' home but combining it with a split can cause problems. Yup...there will be a video on that. Hard lesson Kevin had to learn.

    " TECHNICALLY " truck drivers are " ON-DUTY " 24 hours a day or every hour, as long as they are in that truck. They are " TECHNICALLY " responsible for that truck every minute they are in it, or at least every company I ever drove for I was. If you are on your 10 hr. sleeper-berth/off-duty or just out of hours period and someone hits your truck, you have to take care of that. TECHNICALLY, by DOT rules, if you have anything to do with that truck you are on duty.

      @@TheJoyofTrucking I'm just saying, the rules in trucking are screwed-up. This is not your typical job. This isn't a one-size-fits-all job or industry. You just don't clock in, work your 8 hrs., and clock out and go home. There are a lot of judgments or things left up to interpretation by the people enforcing the rules in the rules of trucking. Probably for a reason. What you or another driver might consider legal, the DOT might not think the same way and he or she is the one with authority to write you a ticket. Even though you might be right. What are you going to do, take it to court? Not everyone can afford to do that.

      @@vendingdudes As I said, rules for trucking are screwed-up. They might not actually say that you are always on duty because they know it to be true. Technically that is. That would put truck drivers on a different pay scale. Government makes rules to benefit them or justify their actions. Like exempting livestock haulers from using an ELD, because they are unsafe. That is what they said.

      Yes. It depends on the ELD. Some don't have a split setting. They'll tell you you are in violation and you have to be courageous and confident in moving ahead, because it will adjust itself afterwards. Not ideal for driver's mental health.
