As a professional car painter starting n early 70's. Working with most every type and brand of paint,of course solvent bases this video is extremely valuable and a must watch! As the industry has changed to water based paints, its great to c u put out a solid video with great info. I really appreciate ur time and info as testing many brands gives all those who r wanting to learn the new paints a great variety to choose from. As a custom painter and airbrush artist and model builder for 50 yrs with many best paint awards I would encourage all to watch, learn and practice as u demonstrated. Great job, thanks again. As they say, even this old dog learned new tricks here.😁🙂. Look forward to following u more and changing over from 50 yrs of solvent based paints, especially now that my grandsons r building and wanting to start painting thier own models. • @dougmidkiffsr.2333
      @dougmidkiffsr.2333 Pƙed rokem +1

K Gee, for urethane based paints I typically use a fast dry urethane reducer. Mid temp or slow dry will have a tendency to attack the plastic. O have also successfully used a fast dry gun washing lacquer thinner, ( my favorite choice when using testers enamels also),though n Cal we can't buy it anymore thank to big gov always shutting down what works. Acetone solvents now r just no where worth mentioning n my opinion, don't work even for cleaning compared to lac thinners. Hope this helps

Your videos have great content. I’m no artist but I build a lot of aircraft and car models and really just getting back into the hobby and trying to learn the correct the proper way to use the airbrush and mix the paints. Is the reducer the thinner for that paint. That’s another concern there are so many different names used for the same product. Do you use distilled water with the reducer or thinner? Is that an acrylic lacquer based paint? I’m currently using tamiya acrylic paints would I use the same concept with their reducer? Just trying to learn. Thanks for sharing your videos and knowledge Artie 😊

Good info I enjoy this video... quick question about adjusting the psi, you know that when the airbrush is trigger the psi on the gauge it lower, so if I want to adjust to 30psi I should adjust to 30psi with out the airbrush trigger and it doesnt matter if the psi lower when the airbrush is trigger or adjust to 30psi while havi g the airbrush trigger so I can compensate for the lower psi?

It's not my button control or my paint/reducer ratio? I've actually been airbrushing for a while, my first airbrush is missing the o ring, and at first it didn't matter. Eventually it stopped blowing lines, my new airbrush triggers the compressor off, as part of its problem? I wouldn't come to you if this wasn't so strange, and difficult. I do really enjoy your videos, they really are right up my alley. Wesley Sept

I build and drive Rc trail/Rock Crawling trucks, and we like to build them to 10th scale. For instance, iv just 3d printed a Toyota Landcruiser 70 Series or LC70 for short, in 5 pieces took 74hrs. So im just looking to paint my Bodys i print, for my 10th scale down to 24th scale. And already my knowledge from this one vid has me looking at distance and amount of media i release when pulling back to get that perfect layer i need, as well as PSI for differant results!..... Whats the difference between airbrush flow improver and reducer? According to the item descriptions:
Reducer - A premium reducer for thinning water-based paint. Allows for decreased drying and curing times as well as improved flow with less tip-dry
Flow improver - improve the flow and delay the drying of paint on the needle while airbrushing
So the reducer is different in that it also thins water based paints? Wouldn't the flow improver do that anyway?

Can Mineral Spirits be used as a reducer? For oil based paint like 1 Shot, especially when pinstripping, a lot of people use it as a reducer so I was curious what affordable and easy to find options there were. Also, for cordless (USB charged) airbrushes usually have a fixed and limited pressure rating like 12-14 psi so is there a workaround for those using such machines? Thanks for the video and the info!

I'm using IPA (isopropanol alcohol) and VG (vegetable glycerin) along with bottled water for my thinning agent, 25% IPA, 75% Bottled water and 15 drop's of VG. But I'm getting spidering or the paint travelling under my templates! I've tried to thicken the paint but then I get problems blowing it through my air brushes! Some paints are fine but the majority splatter and spider. Thank you for your video.

    Hi,
New to airbrushing. I recently purchased the iwata eclips .35. Also purchased some carbon black acrylic and some shading gray acrylic (transparent) by Golden, don't know if you're familiar with that brand. If so do you recommend thinning it?
Also I want to practice doing eyes after learning airbrush control doing dots, lines, dagger strokes and fading using the carbon black.
As far as eyes are concerned do you recommend using the shading gray for detail after doing the outline of the eye with carbon black or should I just use one or the other for the whole peice?
    Most appreciative.

As I understand it "reducer" is just another name for "thinner" - to adjust the viscosity of the paint.
Extender slows the drying time of the paint - just a drop or two per cupful. Helps prevent paint buildup on the tip.
I'm only just past the beginner stage, so I stand to be corrected.

70/30 is only for super small needle's like his micron airbrush. Every paint is different plus the airbrush used comes into play. 60/40 paint to thinner is a good average for acrylics and 50/50 is the minimum you should thin lacquers.

I haven't personally used distilled water, I have tested it with regular tap water and it worked fine but I do recommend bottled water as that seems to work best, hope that helps 👍

Pro tip-in dry areas, Vallejo paints need to be thinned 50/50 and never use flow improver, it works againts flow.

Hi buddy. great vids. Hope you can advise me here.
I've got a new AB kit with Airtank from Amazon. It's budget as far as I can tell. Anyway, I'm a tight arse so I've been trying (and failing) to use my Acrylic Paints in Airbrush, thinning using Water and Isopro 99.9 but I'm forever tip drying or it won't spray, or.....it just doesn't work.
Am I wasting my time trying to use my Acrylic paints to AB or can it be done with the right mix? Can I thin with regular paint thinner? i feel like I've got off to a terrible start with not trying proper AB paints.

Thanks for the compliments on my vids and even though it’s possible to use existing paints you will find that dedicated airbrush paints will work so much better, less tip dry and make airbrushing much more enjoyable . If you are in Australia then grab trident paints if outside of Australia then Createx illustration colors are great đŸ‘đŸ» hope that helps

I’m not a Newby by any means but I find your pressures just a bit high. That said, I have yet to try Createx or Trident paints. I’m currently using Tamiya and MMP paints. I thin at basically the same ratios though!

I'm new but from what I've read, the recommended pressure for models and figurines is somewhere between 20-25psi. 30-40 seems more appropriate for larger projects like bike helmets and prop/costume stuff.

It comes down to practice you need to make sure you get your paint mix right and only pull back the slightest when attempting dots. Try larger shaded dots first then gradually move closer to your page eventually getting to finer dots it all just comes with practice and mastering the double action control đŸ‘đŸ»

Really enjoying your videos, very informative. Just a quick terminology question. I s reducer the same as thinner? here in the UK model paint manufacturers also make specific thinners to use with their paints and I was wondering if this was the same thing. Such brands would include Tamiya, Vallejo, Ammoby Mig, Lifecolor, Humbrol. Many thanks for your help.

Why not use a precision digital reloading scale to measure your paint to reducer ratio? You can tare it out to zero each time, and closely track what you are mixing, even if you want to make your own custom color. Those scales a really cheap, up to thousands of dollars. I have a scale I paid $3500.00 us for. It can weigh a feather or one drop from an insulin syringe. Just a thought.

What is "Reducer," chemically speaking? Is it alcohol? Oil-based? I'm guessing it's rubbing alcohol.
