- Episode 319 : Season 10 : New Zealand - Aotearoa
Hello Friends,
On this episode I round Cape Brett and sail for the amazingly protected harbor of Whangamumu. Once the hook was set and secure I head ashore to meet up with my friend Zhané, a professional sailor from the R. Tucker Thompson tall ship and and a solo sailor with her own boat.
Zhané showed me around the abandoned whaling station and then we hiked up to check out the waterfalls above the ruins. We then hopped in the dinghy and headed off to check out the sea caves that populate the cliffsides of the harbor.

Zhane' is filled with living.
She’s seems full of life and happiness. She’s cool
Zhané is awesome
What a neat landscape. Sad history but time is slowly washing it away. Your friend Zhané is a lovely soul. Thanks for bringing us along.
Love her giggly, free-wheelin' vibe. Thanks for capturing all of that!
She is awesome and a badass sailor
This is the purest form of what traveling by sailboat is to me. Sharing your experience with friends and all the world. I could literally feel the energy and magic in this video. Well Done!
Thank you 🙏🏻 I agree
That heat exchanger thing is actually a steam boiler, same as a train used.
You found a kiwi angel. She needs to start a YT channel with her new boat. Great content. Its a nice spot.. haven't been there in a while ..must head back this season. Thanks James ..and Zhanē.
Very nice having a local tour guide to show you all the cool stuff.
That little white boat in the anchorage is a H28 modern adaptation/production of the Herroshoff 28 very popular in NZ and here in Australia.
You pointed your camera directly at where I once pitched my tent.
I’m so glad you’re sharing all this excellent footage with us, watching it really takes my mind off things! Love it! Keep up the good life!
Pohutukawa is also an excellent boat building timber very flexible yet tough so perfect for steamed frames but also because of the limb shapes knees etc. also beautiful when varnished. Any boat builder worth his salt would have a pile of Pohutukawa limbs stacked behind the shed seasoning and because they regularly fall off cliffs generally just collected from the shoreline.
The newly freshened motor sound good James, must be a great relief to have it purring away like it is.
Nice tour of the whaling station. I agree, glad it's in disrepair/no longer being used for it's intended purpose. Very cool waterfalls and trees though, and of course the sailing, lol! Thanks for sharing James! May fair winds be with you!🌬⛵
That was a tube boiler. Yes , you could say "a heat exchanger" of sort.
Good exploring!
We anchored here and the waterfall behind the whaling station must have been blocked and luckily we were out far enough to miss an enormous deluge of water when the blockage was freed, at the time was quite exciting but a beautiful spot.
Looks like a lovely spot
That tree is so radical 😊
Hey James thanks again for another awesome episode mate! You truly show the off the beaten tracks sorta stuff and that's so dam cool!!! Stay safe out there mate and enjoy
Love your hat
Great fishing out by the hole in the rock
What a beautiful place. The waterfall is so awesome. 😊
It really is!
Thx for all your videos. And greetings from Tyrol/Austria. To everyone else watching here - leave a comment (even if it's just a thx) ;) Don't forget to give it a thumbs up! (to the video)
Heres a comment for the algorithm. Thank-you sailor James.
Always good to see a Jonee around.
Another great adventure and this time with someone who seems just as awesome as you! You’ve inspired me over the years. Looking to buy my first sail boat. My first goal is sailing the Great Lakes 😊
Beautiful. Thanks.
Another fine video thanks for posting James😊 what an awesome place😊
Great video, James. I look forward to them every week. Gorgeous spot.
Thanks for the great video - interesting content as usual. Definitely a cool looking tree.
Thoroughly enjoyed this! Awesome spot.
It is one of my favorite spots in NZ so far
Thanks!
You sure find some pretty mermaids..lol
So cool, your living a dream, it's a pleasure to watch
I was sailing for the first time, Saturday, solo on my old/new 24' sailboat, anchored for the night, light winds, but amazing, I loved it ☠️✌️
The first time is always amazing!!!!
Bro. Same story wth me. Today was day 2 for m me. Yes 38 feet of perfect bOat fell my lap and she’s mine for life. Im finding that the sailing is not the full story. But it drags the experiences, the Friends, challenges, adventure, skills, confidence et etc
Parents, take your children to a learn to sail program at your local yacht club. Pull me doing them the biggest favour ever. A lifetime of all that comes it’s sailing is a life well lived
Great aesthetics all around
She is cuuuute!❤
Dream life
dope vid
The maps showing your passage are great. 👍
Yeah it’s fun to see the path
Attack of the Ents continues at Ent speed at the whaling station.
NZ is famous for its Hoons.... Giant bull sperm whales that gather off some of the deep water drop offs. A Hoon is a NZ term for a bit of a Hooligan
dating back to the hand harpoon whaling days when such an encounter could see a rowed whale boat be smashed up for targeting one of these deep diving giants. The teeth were prised for scrimshaw art work as you know.
So many cool places and great meeting Zahne cool hat ....
They are boy racers in NZ, hoons in Australia
@@Brian-wy7ts
I learned it from a bunch of whale scientists and divers that went out looking for these otherwise solitary older bulls.
They could get pretty grumpy at times and were not above making their massive grumpiness known to anyone and anything in their territory. 👍🏼 hence Hoons ... a bit like bull
Elephants on land when they go into must. 😬 Dont expect them to behave normally..
I hope she rescued the worm, it was looking like it had fallen & couldnt dig though the moss & rock... Really nice sweet looking waterfalls, too bad you didnt pack any shampoo at least you got the salt out. Those trees are called Christmas cause they have red flowers on them (had a roommate from NZ) Thank you SO much !
The “worm” was just a root that looked like a worm 😂
Red flowers on them at Christmas time is why they are called NZ's Christmas trees. (From a local)
Nice to see you found a cool lady friend to hang with, was beginning to wonder about ya mate... LOL.
The God's Eye view with red dots is really helpful to understand where you are and where you are going
❤❤❤
Your music continues to amaze, James. Erik Satie in a Sailing Triteia film; what could be better?
Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻
It's a big steam boiler to power equipment.
love your content. comment for the algorithm
I appreciate that!
oh !!
🗣️Ahoy matey ⚓️
Ok...now you're just showing off..😂😂😂😂
You must have a double. A guy that looked like you was on a Catalina 30 out in my waters Channel Islands. Weird, I must be losing it.😮

Boat was named Jeremi. Crazy that someone looks like you.😅
Like the hat!!
Thanks 👍🏻
Looks amazing. What happened to your solar panel on the starboard side? I looks like it melted.
It was destroyed by a wave during the passage from Fiji
Hows the engine doing ? I been legit worried about it. Lol.. sounds good on the video. Lovin the content. Keep up the amazing work !!
Works perfectly 👍🏻
Nice lee cloth, do you have one for the port side? Did you ever get your starboard solar panel fixed?
Yes I have Lee cloths on both sides and yes I have replaced the panel since this was filmed
"goodbye" lmfao
😂
Do you have your navionics set for North Up, Head Up or Course Up when negotiating round those rocks and small islands. Must get a bit confusing sometimes
I always keep it set to north up
Follow the creek up take ur soap bit of a water fall up there summer days we hav a shower under it
O u have 👍🏻
👍🏻
Maybe I missed the episode but, what happened to your starboard solar panel?
It was smashed on the passage to NZ from Fiji by a massive wave.
Does your friend have a CZcams channel yet, I’d like to see the boat she works on
No she doesn’t, she doesn’t share much online, just living her life :)
Dear James, Please. With respect, when your camera is panning to show us stuff can you please, slow down so we can see what you're telling us about. 😊 👍
Thanks, will do 👍🏻
Cute date
Gotta love the barefoot beauty..
Depressing.
All those whales 🐳🐳🐳🐋🐋🐋
Have you eaten some NewZealand Green Lip Mussels yet? steamed then dipped in garlic butter. Fix that wonky solar panel.🤣
Nice
Is that a trolling motor? Good investment
Not sure what you are referring to, my outboard is a 6HP
