What I used to like doing: reading
What I hate doing: reading for a grade in a set amount of time
Thanks school. You fuck up my motivations.
SO AM I ! :(
Same
School really just destroys learning in general. Putting the emphasis on memorizing things instead of understanding them, and giving no incentive to do more than the minimum required for the minimum grade to satisfy you, schools are effective in pushing away any desire for learning. Reading and thinking become chores, and students leave with the desire to never again pick up a book. Thanks high school
I started to read after I finished school, I freaking hated to be forced to read.
+Lycidas I knew that's the only reason I hate reading its so sad
I find that Goodreads is a great way to track my reading. Seeing your progress and updating page counts is strangely satisfying.
I do this with my bullet journal 😂
Thanks for the tip!!!
As someone who just started using GoodReads, I completely agree.
to me the best time of day to read is AT NIGHT, right before you go to sleep, in bed. 1. you spend half an hour to an hour without your phone which is better for sleep 2. it relaxes you and sets you in a sleeping mode 3. it is so calming and enjoyable as you're in your bed 4. it's gonna be every single day
Clotilde Vivier I agree with You.it's really good idea 💡 Thank you
And later on your body would get habituated to sleeping while reading and you will not be able to read without feeling extremely drowsy.
Been there, done that. Now trying to break the habit.
@FRU1T5ALAD good, then sleep is more important for your body, and you should sleep.
Idk. Whatever suits you.
I need to revise my syllabus at night. I read in very early in the morning.
Tried this. It just doesn’t work for me but my husband loves reading at night i fund that I don’t retain as much at the end of my day when I’m tired from the day.
It's so annoying having reading OCD. I have to keep rereading certain sentences to make sure I read them "correctly" and it's hard for me to turn the page and I have to keep checking I'm on the right page, even though I am.
+h jan you're not the only one...it's worth it though.
Worth what?
I'm literally the exact same way :-/
bluiflip Have you found anything that works? i'm desperate
To be honest. Just finding something you are deeply interested in trying to understand. With practice you'll slowly grasp how to effectively retain the information rather than re-reading the same paragraph over and over. Not to mention it will enhance your overall perspective of how literary structure should be presented. It all pieces together very nicely, in time. Keeping away from distractions like what he mentions is this video is a big must. Baby steps though. It takes time, but is doable.
jesus you can read roughly 30 books a year by reading only 20 pages a day, i am getting started on monday lol, not today, everything is closed today
mertvak speaking of Jesus could you finish reading the Bible under a year by reading 20 pages a day
Well, there are plenty of reading plans devised for the Bible, depending on how you want to tackle it. I should probably do that myself one of these days. www.biblestudytools.com/bible-reading-plan/
That are verry small books

2) Schedule your reading time
3) Schedule it after exercise
4) Make it as enjoyable as possible
5) Cut distractions
6) Anticipate and remove barriers
7) Externalize your motivation
I started doing the 25 pages a day challenge 2 weeks ago.
I'm schedulling the reading time just when I get back from work because I still have that working mindset and I know that if I stop to rest, watch some youtube or something, I'm not going to do it.
So, I get home, I make some tea, and start reading. 25 pages that's all it takes.
I won't say it's easy but it gets easier with time.
Thank you, Frank, for your book recomendations and for all the tips that have helped me improve my life!
Reading a certain number of pages per day is a great idea compared to a number of books per month, I am a huge procrastinator so I always end up pushing it 'til the very last moment
I want to sincerely thank you for all your informative and helpful content I have always been watching your videos whenever I had exams coming and whenever I needed a tiny "push up" to go through my study materials I have read your book and I loved how it motivated me
I have never commented on any of your videos before (I am pretty shy when it comes to posting comment, I know how weird it sounds ^^)
and again, thank you so so much
I originally tasked myself with reading two books per month, I was struggling to reach that and I found myself subconsciously buying a reading progressively smaller books to help me achieve my idiotic goal.

Thomas Frank .. You're a real life saver ! In my first semester in college, I had a real bad marks and my average was 2.7 🙁and since I'm studying medicine that was a disappointment for me and my family 😟 so in the second semester I decided to change my strategies and I've been watching you for 3 months now . I can tell the difference in my performance.. my marks are a lot better and I've built a lot of focus in my classes .. thanks to you 😃😊 hopefully I'll get 3.3 in this semester ✌
After seeing this video last week, I started this 25 pages/day routine and as I checked, I got a lot of progress on my readings in a week, than what I would have in a month.
Thanks for the tips!
hey thomas ..I request you to do a video/vlog on "how to improve mathematical skills""
thank you..
Working on it - just want to make sure it's good!
(What I'm about to type is what Salman Khan said on a TED speech in 2011)
Imagine that a student got 95% out of 100% on a test. He failed on the 5% for some reason (some concept or exercise that he did not understand). Usually what a student will do is he won't invest more time into the concept he skiped neither the teacher will care about it and will follow onward to the next unit. What we'll notice is that that student is going to have minor problems that'll evolve into significant problems in the future.
What this means is that if you really don't get a concept, just invest more time in the exercises about that concept, graphs show that students who do so manage to "evolve" way faster in the future. So a student that is thought to be slow can actually be "gifted".
That's how Maths works. It's abstract which means it's further from reality the deeper you go. The deeper you go the more time you need to invest in all kinds of concepts. But in the end, you'll find yourself improving and the extra time you wasted on a concept will be compensated in the future.
Hope this helps, and sorry for my grammar.

I seem to do this: Investigate productivity, health and learning tips very seriously, apply them relentlessly and get great results. Then, after a couple months I get tired and stop applying 90% of what I learned until I regret it enough that I start the cycle again. It's so hard for me to be consistent.
+Enrique Z this is a common problem; it's so easy to take on a bunch of new challenges when we're motivated and excited - much harder to keep them all up as time goes on. I think the trick is to start with a small scope - one habit that starts out easy. Eventually, it'll become automatic AND give you an increased ability to take on new ones.
Thomas Frank Thanks!
+Thomas Frank I have the same issue, I feel like I can never be consistent with anything and that depresses me.
+Enrique Z I do the same exact thing!!! Especially in procrastination.
+Fede Las It's very frustrating!
Spend time with people who enjoy reading.
I'm having some trouble with reading recently and your video popped up at the right time! I'm going to try that! Thanks a lot!
have u heard of Goodreads? Its another cool way to keep track of books you have read, how much you read/ your progress, and what you want to read! I love it.
I'm a high school math teacher and I look forward to your videos each week. I always get some nugget of info that makes me a better teacher or that I can share with my students (and daughters). I'm currently reading Barbara Oakley's A Mind for Numbers" and now I plan on checking out "Spark."
This video was so incredibly helpful and insightful. As someone who usually puts off exercise because of the amount of work I have, I never realized how important it can be to help me focus more and absorb more information. I love reading and I love all of these tips.
Great tips and I love the effort that goes into editing the graphics and whatnot for your videos, really impressive work!

Awesome video and great timing for me right now. You should do more videos on this kinda stuff, not just school related

Awesome video! For myself and also Im gonna play it to my ESL students for inspiration. The idea of doing a smaller quota each day vs a book per month is a philosophy I believe can be applied to so many things in life. Any kind of habit creation. Exercise, tidying your desk (something I'm working on), dream projects, keeping up with emails, anything!
I'm following your tip of reading 25 pages a day and I've read 15 books this year 🙌 thanks for your tips.
Thanks for the tips! Do you have a video about how to retain more information from the book that you read? I'd also be interested in seeing how you go about vocabulary words as you read. It's a pet-peeve of mine to gloss over a particular word that I don't know. I simply can't do it. I absolutely have to stop, put down the book and look up the meaning of the word and write down the definition in my note book. That obviously takes up most of the time I could be spending on actually READING the book. Any tips? Make a video for both questions, please! :-)
+disobeytv oh yeah that's a HUGE problem for me as well. It's the reason I still haven't finished Cryptonomicon - I absolutely love Neal Stephenson, but that book has so much vocab that it'd take me a good 5 minutes to finish a page.
I'd recommend keeping a piece of paper next to you when you read; when you come across a vocab term you don't know, write it down and try to move on. Hopefully the word's context can give you enough that you're not lost. Later, go through your list and look up all the new words at once. That works well enough for me - my brain knows the word is written down for later, so it can let it go.
For retaining more information, check out the Active Reading video I linked to in the description. Additionally, exercising helps you retain information better as well (if you learn afterwards - not during). I'll get into all the biology behind it in a future video :)
Your channel is great and very useful. My study is almost over, I have the finals month now. Your videos helped me a lot through this hard last year of studying. Thank you for all the information and cheerful presentation))
And I have a question for you (it may be interesting topic for new video I guess): what to do with all materials, notes, books etc. after graduation? As you've already finished your studying may be you could give some advice from your own experience: how to decide-what to keep and what not?
I'm also interested.
I need to know this as well. I have a huge pile of stuff from highschool which I can't force myself to throw out, even though I subconsciously know that I'll never look at it again.
Love your videos and their content. Recently started editing videos for a friend's youtube channel and I'm noticing the effort you put in your edits as well. Keep up the great work!
Oh this is great! It is so useful, just what I needed! Thank you Frank for you commitment, help and valuable insight!

This is so useful! I'm kind of a slow reader but I love reading. I hope now I can read more consistently and as a result, more books per month. There's a lot of books I want and need to read, so this is just perfect.

How can I deal with vocabulary problem during my reading? Do I have to stop and check difficult words or keep on as long as I understand the contextThanks
I just write down the words and go look them up later. Before I started doing that, I was always stopping to look up words and it made reading take forever.
Thanks for suggeation! I will try that I am now reading Harry Potter and sorcerer stone by Rowiling.
Im reading think and grow rich by napoleon hill
Circle the words. Generally, if the book is advanced compared to your level of compression, then you probably have to look up words to put it together. Otherwise, hard words tend to just add to the overall context and it's mostly redundant I've found. Other passages tend to provide the overall understanding.
do you have any recommendations for non-native speaker to start reading? Writing the words down and look them up later is a great idea but what about "a lot of them"?
I'm not a uni student anymore but I really like your videos and watch them regularly. Keep up the good work.
I just love the content you create . It really helps me a lot . Keep creating good stuff like this !
People should read more. Knowledge is power.
Whenever I sit down to read something whether for school, or for myself, I always end up rushing and not comprehending much, or getting invested and reading at a snail's pace. :/
Dude I freaking love your content! Major respect, keep it up.
Thanks for this video! My goals this year is to read anything that I wish to move on with my creative artist path and self educating person. I am a self taught artist and I got my first illustration job in the senior year of high school. But it took many years to practice but I was constantly practicing my art. I also found out that having a good english teacher really encourages me to write more! I got a regents score of 55 in english and I got 60 or higher score on algebra, social studies, and even biology as well! I was safe to go to community college! Again thank you Thomas Frank for really great tips and getting started on organized life! Your videos are really informative and I think you are the only male channel that does these organizing tips.... But I hope you'll keep producing these videos consistently. I really do enjoy them! Anyway I am hoping a better wishes to you!

I find myself tired after I work out. What should I do?
+Elias Oquendo Well, he was giving his particular example. So you might be different. Pick your best time. Mine is in the morning.
+Elias Oquendo Don't work out too hard. I do my more intensive work-outs in the late afternoon and do an easy work-out in the morning if I feel I need the energy.
Protein shake and gatorade.
+Elias Oquendo I'd get up before work and do your productive stuff then, keep your best brain for yourself and your tired brain for work (UNLESS you love your job). Then when you get home just relax and do what you feel like for an hour or two before going to bed.
Elias Oquendo take a cold shower then sleep
I never lose motivation during the day... I love reading, I need it!
Great video, and very helpful. My favorite tips are eliminating distractions, reading a certain number of pages per day, and rewarding yourself after or during reading. I think these three tips would work best for me. Thanks for the video :)
What is wrong with your audio? It sounds so metallic...
+LiNingAir I've legitimately been playing with every piece of my setup this week to figure out why that's happening. It might be the specific mic I'm using combined with the distance from my mouth when I'm filming, because it doesn't seem to be a problem when I'm podcasting.
I do think the audio turned out better on this one than on last week's video though, because I cut the audio a bit in the frequency range where sibilance happens. I'll keep working to improve it going forward too.
+Thomas Frank Big Thanks to you Thomas for doing that, I assume that problem lies in either audio card or your mic. Thx!
+Thomas Frank The mic you use (which I think is still the Sm7b) is a microphone meant to be used for podcasting and very close to the source. For your purposes, a lavalier microphone (ex: RodeLink) or a shotgun microphone (Rode NTG2/3/4, etc.) would be much better. Also, you should do an updated 'whats in my bag video with the new peak design messenger bag)
+Tim Felbinger (Felbinger Films) thanks for the tip! That makes sense - I was wondering why the audio was a problem in only some videos, and now I can probably look back an identify those as ones where I was further from the camera and mic. When I shoot close up, I can place the mic much closer and still keep it out of the frame.
Looks like an NTG3 might be in my future after all...
Who views reading as a chore???
New subscriber. I suck at reading and it's not my cup of tea. It's actually my weakest skill since I didn't grow up with that habit or hobby. All the video teaches you is how to trick yourself into more reading. Counting pages, making a spreadsheet, hiding from distractions. What? You got the idea of reading wrong. This is not a job. It has to be enjoyable. If you don't enjoy the book you're reading just leave it and start another. If you enjoy it, you'll forget about everything else, until you finish it.
Боян Тепавичаров It doesn't work that way. Sometimes you enjoy things but you've to make effort to put yourself at it.
Good tips. I think it varies for different people though. For example, I enjoy reading in complete silence as I find no distractions help me to read quicker and absorb the content better. For this reason I always read at home rather than go out somewhere like a coffee shop.
Great video, really inspired me to pick up a book and get reading. All of your videos are really relevant for me even though i don't go to college, so good job!

Keeping track of progress and making that available for others to see is a great method! Hi
One of my goals this year, want to build my English and intellectual skills
One thing that really helps me is having a designated spot to read. Mine is in my closet. I hung a flashlight from a shelf and I put a pillow and blanket there. When i sit there not only is it dark so I only can look at the light on my book and I’m not distracted, but when I go there my brain just knows it’s time to read and I find much easier to get into the book. That’s just one thing that helped me and I hope it helps you 📚📚📕📗📘📙
Very informative video. Thanks for the tips!
Thanks man, I'm starting on habitchu to attempt to normalize reading more and I it makes a lot of sense. As well as applying this to some other habits too. Here's to hoping it sticks!
Hey! Considering you are reading about habits, perhaps you would enjoy my breakdown on the compound effect by Darren Hardy. Section by section, 2 videos per week :) if not, thats alright too!
