      Hey, can you make a video about how to understand difficult history books? I recently finished a book by Yvonne Sherratt [cant say the name as i will likely get shadow banned lol] but its a really good book straight too the point and simple too read but now i'm reading 'history of the vikings' by Gwyn Jones and it's super difficult too understand. I would really appreciate it if you would and remember: "If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't understand it yourself." - Albert Einstein
      Btw love your moustache you're lucky lol

    Instead of focusing on the number of books read per month/year or the number of pages read in a day/week, I focus on how much time I want to spend reading. So I commit to, say, 15 or 20 min a day. This allows me to relax, adapt my reading pace to the book I'm reading, and just enjoy the process.

      I do this as well. I love it. I try to get 2 deep work blocks of reading in a day to try and reach my daily page numbers. Maybe I need to make that explicit next time. Thanks!

      I agree with OP. I went from incrementing to reading 30 minutes a day. Things naturally fell into place when I ended up reading 7-8 books in under a few months.
      When you focus on the process of the habit. The outcomes will naturally fall into place.

      For those of you reading this message thinking you couldn't do that, start with a page a day and commit to that for 3 weeks, and then after 3 weeks, gradually increase your page count from there, transition into time frames, then transition into books per month. Yw

      This is great. I often go back and forth with audible versions, paper, and kindle so I don’t really have page counts. Kindle pages change if I change the font size, but I have percent completion. Focusing on minutes would work across book types!

    I love how "messy" your logs are! I feel like so many journaling/reading log tracker videos are all super pretty with lots of effort put into making spreads and such....but that method definitely doesn't work for me. Definitely taking inspiration from your method :) I really like the mindset of "1 pg/day is about 1 book a year...so 2pg/day is 2 books, 3pg/day is 3 books...", I think that helps so much with motivation, because it shows that even a tiny, achievable goal builds up to a great outcome.

    I am very busy with two jobs, so my strategy is to read 10 pages of 2 books each day (10 in the morning and 10 in the evening). This isn't a lot, but this allows me to read 2, 300-page books per month, 24 in a year, 120 in 5 years. Sometimes, I add in a 3rd book if I can, but I think some people burden themselves by saying "I"m going to read 100 books per year" and they never do. Also, I have stopped choosing my books for the year because my moods and tastes change. I choose them at the beginning of each month. Thanks for your videos!

    For me personally I cant really read a specific page number each day. Because then I just focus on reading pages instead of reading the book, if you know what I mean.
    As soon as I start counting how many pages there are left for me, I realize that I dont really soak up the information anymore.
    How I deal with that, is that I sit down and set a timer for like 40 minutes or an hour and just read. Doing that twice a day gives allows me to easily read a book a week

    • @ParkerNotes
      @ParkerNotes  Před 9 měsíci +4

    I use a monthly calendar and write the pages read in each square, and color code based on book. Goodreads is good for keeping track of books read but not for daily reading, so I use my monthly calendar for that. That motivates me to update the calendar and thus, to read 😊

      @@ParkerNotes for me that is just starting out, one book for one month. Daily goal for reading the book is to read 7-10 pages a day. If there are other days where I dont feel like reading much, just a page a day to keep consistent. Then I write those pages down.
      I dont do the average pages/books to read for year. So I want to make it easy for me just to start the habit.

    For the month of August I've actually been doing a reading challenge and using a method similar to yours. My goal this year was to read 36 books, but as a stay-at-home mom with a toddler, it's been really hard to make time to read and I'm so behind in my goal. So I thought I'd try to read 50 pages minimum every day for the entire month of August, to see if I could make some progress. I set up some rules and rewards to help me get through it and it's been going really well!
    These are my rules: First, anything goes (fiction, nonfiction, e-books, audiobooks, rereads, etc.) Second, I can't get ahead. If I read 100 pages one day, it won't count toward any future days, I always start at zero each day. Third, I am allowed to catch up. If I miss a day, then I can read extra to make up the day that I missed (but so far I haven't missed a single day!)
    For my rewards, I set a main goal of completing 21 days. If I complete 21 days, I get to buy a small digital something, like an app, a movie, a discounted e-book, etc. And if I get a 100% perfect month, then I am allowed to buy a physical book! I've already passed 21 daya so I'm planning to buy an app for learning Japanese. I'm just a few days away from having a perfect month, so if I can make it I'll be buying the next book in the series I'm reading. 😊
    For recording my progress, I use a blank calendar in my planner. I've mostly been reading just one book at a time, just for the sake of making it easier to track pages. Each day I write the title of the book I'm reading in that day's calendar square. Since I read in short spurts throughout the day (mostly during naptimes) I wait until the end of the day to record my pages. I write the final page I read to under the title, and then I use the previous day's page number to calculate how many pages I read and write it at the top of the calendar square so it's easier to see. If I read 50 pages or more, then I'll use a marker to add a check to the square. It just makes me feel good about my accomplishment lol. All together, it kind of looks like this:
    +52
    Book Title
    -read to page 102
    ✅️
    So far with this challenge, I've managed to read 7 books this month and I'm working on an eighth. It's been tough to keep up with but I'm really glad I tried something new. I think going forward I might not read 50 pages every day, but now I know that when I make it a priority and make an effort, I can make reading a daily part of my life. 📚❤

      Kudos! That is super-disciplined! The only bigger-level reading goal I had was that I could buy 1 new book for every 3 books that I read and finished - and I only accomplished that once! I like how you break that down and adjust for getting ahead. I think that's the kicker - there are always tiny exceptions that lead to fails or over acheiving and then you lose energy to keep it up! Going to try to incorporate something similar... Thanks for sharing!!

    I'm going to keep a reading log and my goal is to read just 10 pages a day since my aim is to read a book a month. I also have a ton of baths so I got the paperwhite kindle (water proof). I went to never reading in my life to finishing 6 books in 4 weeks! I love it, can also get a ton of books for free and read whenever. I have severe adult ADHD so it just helped me get into books, sometimes 5 minutes at a time, upto a couple hours! Bring millions of books with you where ever you want, Ive also gotten into buying books that I love in hard copies just to maybe read down the road in hand. :) Loved this video!

I have taken your page count suggestion, and moved it to my planner. Although I am constantly reading various articles, etc. throughout the day, my difficulty is picking up a book to read daily. I think seeing that pre-dated daily space, waiting for me to record my page count, will compel me to pick up a book, regardless of what else I have read that day, and help me to exceed the 26 book goal I normally set for myself. I thought this would be easy, but instead I would pick up another book that catches my eye. Your lesson is a wonderful way to keep the anxiety and procrastination away. Just like all other goals, we all need a teacher that helps us stay focused and disciplined to succeed! Thanks Teach!

    My goal is to read 20 minutes a day. That 20 minutes often turns into an hour or more, though. One year I read around 150 books. Will never create a goal to read a certain number of books ever again, because I steered away from massive volumes. Plus, it took the enjoyment of relishing a really good book.
    Also, Saddleback should partner with you. Found you earlier this week and a Saddleback order is on its way. LOL!

      Haha I'm going to screenshot this and tag them in a post!! That point about steering away from big volumes is so true. If you want to read a certain number of books you can always pick short fiction books but that's not really the point. Thanks for reminding me of this point I wish I had included it in the video.

    Your videos are so helpful!
    Its good to see that there are other people around the world who loves reading too. In these days it feels a bit lonely to be a reader as most people can’t hold their attention for more than 10 min.
    My reading routine consists in reading during the day the things I have to read, like the subjects from my field related to trauma, in the evening I choose a classic novel, yesterday evening I started reading “the old curiosity shop” from Charles Dickens, it was hard to stop reading it, I found the story so engaging.

    For a few ears I’ve been using a spreadsheet on my computer…logging just the book/author,date begun and date finished and maybe a one sentence comment why I’m reading the book and/or a sentence of how/why I liked the book. (I got this idea from Doug Wilson in Moscow, ID, pastor/teacher/“blogger” who is a prolific reader)
    I have found it helps me actually finish more books and keeps me on track (ha, I don’t forget about ones I’ve begun but set aside for a newer interest) ….. this way of tracking pages is interesting and appealing and I’m going to consider it. Thanks!

    My goal is 33 pages per day to hit 1,000 pages per month or 12,000 pages a year. I keep a reading notebook with some notes from what I've read or to breakdown what books I want to read and when I want to finish them. To keep myself accountable and make it fun, I'll mark my desk calendar with a symbol if I hit my reading goal that day, something I do for each of my daily disciplines (meditation, gym, 5am wakeup, etc).
    Great video! Glad to see there are others out there taking a similar approach to reading 😃 📚

    another book lover here, and I used to read way more during in school and before work gets on more hectic. Since early last year I tried to get on with my read habit and what's better way than to keep a (oh yes) my own reading log. I read for leisure to destress and leisure, lifting my mind totally off from work and numbers. So I started reading novels / fiction from Chinese language and now more and totally back with English. They are e-books and I got them borrowed from libraries and some of them are available on my Kobo ereader, which is really good for long journeys during my holidays and traveling.
    I don't set my own goals because I can finish a novel of around 500-pages within 2 days the fastest and over a week when I have other priorities. My reading log / tracker is a nice way to count for me how many books I have read and enjoyed.
    And now I just started my online introductory philosophy course last month (Sep) and I am beginning to wonder should I include non-fiction as well in my reading tracker? Because primarily my reading tracker logs in y favorite reading time only. Hahaha... thanks for your video and sharing. I was browsing for some philosophical stuffs and came across yours.
    Edit to add: Unlike you keeping track by using notebooks, I am doing them, i.e. my reading tracker and studies notes using onenote.
    I see my handwriting is getting more terrible and afraid whatever I had written would have me spending more time to read over them in future.

    1) I've had a book bingo card languishing on my fridge for a while and want to finish it up this summer. It's a good way to read books outside my typical genre. 2) I also have an issue with the having of books but not necessarily the reading of them, so I'm going to start donating them after reading and then checking books out of the library. Deadlines are good things. 3) I want to learn things, too (e.g., Excel) and do Lection Divina studies, so this will be a good way to establish the discipline. 4) Thanks for the description on how to keep a log. It is really inspiring that you don't use stamps, rulers, colored pencils, calligraphy, etc. My kind of functional journal.

    I keep a journal of book titles that I've finished. I note down the author, title, and the date completed. I try to finish a book per week. This year I've fallen behind due to working 60+ hours every week. I'm also studying several foreign languages in order to read them as well. My reading focuses on history primarily; some philosophy, sometimes a literary classic. There's never enough time. A friend of mine, a retired librarian, told me that in his youth he would choose a subject (U.S. Civil War, Ancient Egypt, Russian history, for ex.) and read as much as possible in that area, delving into the most essential and significant studies for three months. Occasionally, he would read a book on a different subject in order to "cleanse the palette." After three months, stop, and on to the next. After many years of doing this, eventually he could pick up any history book or biography and already know the historical context. My own reading habits are far more desultory.
    I see a nice Great Books of the Western World series on the shelves behind you. 👍
    Best wishes on your reading journey!

    Storygraph motivates me the most. I track my daily reading (audiobook + physical/digital books) on there. They have graphs depicting my page count and other things. I also have y reading streak on there that I don't wanna break. I really need the gamification and it helps me a lot to set goals on there (pages, minutes listened and books read) and be held accountable for it :)

  • @IlluminsitD
    @IlluminsitD Před 3 měsíci

    So cool!!! I suuuck at reading haha but want to do more of it. I also tried good reads and just downloaded Story Graph to try. I like your method a lot as I am already an avid journaler for the last decade+. I don't necessarily have a set goal but it's more of a "Read at least 1 chapter or part" no matter how many pages that is, or I'll schedule 30 minutes to an hour and just read, finishing whatever chapter/part I'm on when the time is up.

  • @426F6F
    @426F6F Před 8 měsíci +3

    Just find books that interest you, whether they are expository or fiction, then start reading. Maybe try the first dozen or two pages, or the first chapter, and if you still aren't interested, then try another book. You can always come back to that book later. It took me multiple books before I found one that was engaging and enjoyable to read (plus the first chapter was pretty short and I was a lazy reader). After that, I was hooked. Now I have multiple books on the go that I alternate between every other day to keep things interesting if I feel like I'm getting burnt out from one author's work I find difficult to grasp.

    I focus on the books I want to read, quality over quantity. When I pick a book I decide, based on how long/complex the book is, how long I want to spend reading it, how busy I am in that period, and I calculate a daily goal, that I log using your method by compiling every day and then by checking the goals met or adjusting it if I have been too pessimistic or optimistic. At the beginning of the log notebook I have an index of books I read and total pages
