  • OLYMPICS 2024: "We have to change something politically" German sport in crisis! What should happen now
Franziska van Almsick, former Olympic swimmer and world record holder, talks in an interview with WELT about the current state of German swimming and the challenges that athletes have to face. Van Almsick emphasizes that the German swimmers are showing an impressive performance at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, despite the lack of numerous medals. She particularly highlights the successes of Lucas Mertens, who won gold in the 400-meter freestyle, and Isabel Gose, who won bronze in the 1500-meter freestyle. Van Almsick points out that the team is very young and has trained hard. She emphasizes that six German records and 17 swimmers in the top eight places represent a good result, although more medals would be desirable.
However, Van Almsick sees the problem not only in swimming, but in German sport as a whole. She criticizes the loss of reputation and recognition of sport in society and calls for more visibility and support. She talks about the need to better support and train coaches and the entire support team in order to offer athletes the best possible conditions. She also notes that the idea of performance has lost importance in Germany in recent years and emphasizes the importance of winners and losers in sport and in society.
In the discussion about political support, Van Almsick welcomes Germany's first bid to host the Olympic Games. However, she criticises the downgrading of the Federal Youth Games and stresses that it is important to motivate young people to try hard and compete. In her opinion, Germany needs a culture that promotes achievement and the will to be first.
