- In this data visualization video I look at the most popular social media networks based on active accounts during that time. I also did not include streaming video platforms such as CZcams and Twitch, I will post those in a different video.
These stats come from Wikipedia, archive.org and from Google Books searches. I did not include those platforms that did not report stats.I also reduced the numbers to take into account fake and duplicate accounts. Some of the data includes approximate numbers as the data available skipped years.
In the video I included screenshots of certain platforms from the list as they looked during that particular year. The platform thumbnails:

I think these are cumulative numbers. Tumblr's active user count dropped a whole lot after the porn ban. Twitter has more active users in 2020 than tumblr.

Yeah, I still don't give my personal information on any website, social media, etc, when creating an account, I've always given a fake date of birth, fake last name, fake address, etc. Unfortunately, that won't help anymore in a near future, the NWO was created to have full control and access to everyone's life.
First rule was don't go on the internet if parents are expecting a phone call.

A lot of people left because of the new rules in 2017. Many went to Dreamwidth but the communities I knew it for (Science Fiction fandom) basically went to Facebook.

No There is NO POINT, believe it or not but TikTok is not a profitable platform and doesn’t have ads, it would be a waste buying it and has a very high chance of dying out because it’s basically based off music unlike social media platforms where you just post or share things
The thing I find about most of these platforms is that the environment can be very toxic or useless and so you find many people deleting their account, but with platforms like Reddit, you never really leave, you either just change subreddit or come back to it another time.
Or Pinterest where it is basically a social media without the social part LOL
I'm surprised Tumblr is still that big, I wonder what percentage of those accounts are inactive now though. I heard a lot of users migrated to Twitter after Tumblr started censoring stuff and I'm assuming the majority of Tumblr users already had Twitter so this didn't lead to a massive amount of new Twitter accounts being created.

One of the early kind of social media platforms was Hotline. Actually was not a clear social media, but more a share platform, but it had a chat with a profile.
This platform was available only for Mac users and after it gains some popularity was accessible for PC users as well.

I can imagine in active users it is though. Like we have to keep in mind here that some of these never "hit the market" outside specific counrties like with WeChat, SinaWeibo and QZone basically not existing outside China which doesn't allow most common sites/apps. Also this is most likely measured by accounts, so you have people with multiple accounts, inactive accounts, etc. and Facebook was a huge thing not so long ago.
Just that most now moved elsewhere but I highly doubt everybody deleted their account.

I see Classmates still exists. In the UK we had a similar site called Friends Reunited; in the 2000s it was huge, a genuine social phenomenon. But novelty fatigue and Facebook took its toll, and it was permanently shut down in 2016.

Facebooks a few years old so theres a few dead people accounts in there. And a lot of people make multiple accounts for different reasons, or lose their account data

Fascinating. Of course the counter counts all users as cumulative, and double and treble counts them across platforms, hence we arrive at 10B users in 2020 where there were actually 3.8BN active users total. But, allowing for that, it’s a great graphic and fascinating to watch.
