You don't "listen" to Layne Staley sing, you "feel" his vocals in your soul.
Facts
That is 100% true
Layne was my favorite Grunge singer as a child and remains to this very day. What a tragic soul, I will always miss his voice.
Layne was a once in a lifetime vocalist for sure but it's the harmonizing of Layne and Jerry that made it pure magic 🪄 ✨
@@pyromaestro Yeah~ *sings with the voice of a divine billy goat* lol, always loved Layne's vibrato!
Staley vocals give me chills everytime. He was a powerhouse ❤
@@Levi_Amongst_the_Watchers I think dyslexia got you man, you switched Stanley for Staley
RIP ANDY WOOD
Such a banger 🔥🔥🔥🤘🏻 Sean Kinney's drums are sick on this! This was written by Jerry for Andrew Wood after his death- overdose, yes. Jerry wrote 90%. RIP Layne and Mike ✨ #LSMS Mike Starr- the original bass player in this video- died from an overdose in 2010.
Mike always carried the guilt of being the last person to see Layne alive-he was incredibly ill and Mike was begging him to allow him to call 911 but Layne absolutely refused any help. Mike left angry and frustrated- he said Layne begged him not to leave with them in that state, with Mike angry, asking Mike not to leave things between them like that. They figure Layne died just a few hours later.
@@ashleydixon4613 yes. I posted that exact story in the Facebook group after this was posted earlier today. Mike hurt for so long. 💔
You’re partially correct. Jerry’s wrote the cast majority of the music, Layne actually wrote about half the lyrics including Man in the Box, Nutshell, Rain When I Die, Angry Chair, Etc, etc. He tended to write the darker lyrics compared to Jerry.
Layne is wearing Andrew Wood's orange shirt in that video. Xana la Fuente ( AW's fiancee, the celebrated "Stargazer" written about in "Say Hello to Heaven " by couple's roommate & AW's best friend, Chris Cornell), spoke of how the shirt just never looked or fit quite right on Andrew, yet he wore the shirt regularly. Layne asked to borrow it aft Andrew's death & she said it just immediately became Layne's own & he wore it proudly.
Mikes riffs were legendary
Hands down my favorite Alice In Chains song. That bass with Sean Kinneys drums is nasty.
Totally agree! Kidneys drums are awesome
It's a tribute to Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood who passed away. Temple Of The Dog featuring members of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam was a tribute project to Andrew Wood. Far Behind by Candlebox was also a tribute to Andrew Wood.
I didn't know about 'Far Behind' and really now I can see that! So cool 🎶🤘🏽
@@joaovictormarini2488
Yeah man, they're all Seattle people.
@@mikenastasi8927 I know man. But I didn't know about the 'Far Behind' was a tribute to Andrew, like I did about Temple of the Dog and Would
@@joaovictormarini2488
I didn't mean it in a sarcastic way, so if I came off that way I apologize.
@@joaovictormarini2488 somehow I didn’t know that either about “far behind!” Don’t know how-I was certainly in that music scene in the 90s! Never got to see AIC live 😔, but I did see Candlebox.
Jerry Cantrell the person who wrote this entire song and is one of the best songwriters of all time, Jerry wrote this as tribute for Andrew wood who passed away from heroin overdose. Layne was an all time great vocalist too, truly a special pairing. RIP Layne.
Yeah I think his songwriting is top tier for sure ! One of my faves 😊
That was wood’s sweater that layne was wearing in the video
Dirt, IMO, is one of the greatest albums of all time. Any genre. Some say it's the perfect album. If there is such a thing.
It's certainly the album that comes to mind when I think of grunge.
Down in a hole is a must hear! Loved the reaction as always ❤️
They did the unplugged version a long while back but it got copyrighted. So it's no longer up.
@@marissanorth85 oh yeah that's true! Such a shame. Maybe they can do the original instead of the unplugged 😇
Another Cantrell masterpiece, man doesn’t miss as a songwriter
@@marissanorth85 oh no!! That’s sad 😢 there’s a lot a reactions to that song, why did they got copyrighted?
One of my favorites along with Layne on the Mad Season album.
It's called "Would?" as a play on Andrew Wood who it's about - Layne also wears Andrew's favourite jumper in the video - Andrew died on the eve of Mother Love Bone releasing their debut album by ODing after getting himself clean previous to that (MLB then split but Stone and Jeff then formed Pearl Jam). This song showcases Jerry's songwriting as it shows off Sean's drumming (like Rooster was written with the bass in mind) and even after all these years it still gives me chills to hear this song. Love AiC with Layne on vocals, there's been no one close to him since imho, to hear Layne in his prime, you need to check out "Love, Hate, Love" (Live at The Moore). RIP Layne and RIP Mike Starr. For some MLB, i heartily recommend "Chloe Dancer/Crown of thorns", "This is Shangri-La" and "Stardog Champion" :)
Bleed the freak also live at the Moore. Epic
The song is also a middle finger to people who are judgemental of others choices without understanding where they come from
"So I made a big mistake, try to see it once my way."
Ditto on 'Love Hate Love' live at the Moore... actual 32nd anniversary of it yesterday. Ive watched this concert many times and it gives me the chills every time... especially this song... but the whole concert is fricken incredible. And great reco's for MLB too.
One of the greatest voices of Gen-X. Layne Staley gets right to your heart and you can't help but FEEL something deep when you listen to him. I miss the days of amazing bands like this, writing incredible songs and performing with so much heart and soul. People have always struggled and suffered, but it seems that we put so much of that into music back then. There was no time for music quite like the 90s 🖤🖤🖤
You guys are so good at interpreting lyrics. It is about relapse and it’s a tribute to Andy Wood who died of a heroin overdose.
That bass riff absolutely defines grunge. Mike Starr, be at peace you legend, wherever you are -- hopefully with Layne.
🔥🔥🔥 Staley's voice is incredible
i appreciate the fuck out of you two. two real dudes chillin
🙏🙏🙏
these dudes ae super chill. yall earned a sub
🙏🙏🙏
You got the meaning pretty well, guys. This is one of their best songs. “Rooster” has always been my favorite of theirs. Their Dirt album is a monster one with lots of great songs. AIC is my favorite grunge band. Also, thanks for sharing a little of your personal journey with us. So proud of you for continuing to take care of yourself in that way. You seem like great guys and I have enjoyed watching you grow and expand your horizons. Y’all are one of my very few favorite reaction channels.
Alice in Chains is one of my favorite bands ever. Keep playing their music & I'll keep watching.
I saw these guys open for Ozzy in 1991 to support their first album. They blew my mind how great they were. Been a huge fan ever since.
RIP Layne - gone way too soon 😢 Alice in Chains just rocked so damn hard, and Layne's voice, so unique and emotive. Can't help but wonder what they would have done if he hadn't been a total smackhead and had lived longer. Such a sad end to an amazing talent. Amazing. 😈😎👍
I'm convinced that Layne would've not continued with the band. I think his depression was too deep. He had already not been with the band for 6 years when he died. I think he would've let them go on without him.
It’s funny how this generation knows songs via commercials or video games…I saw Layne in a three piece suit at the start of their set on Lollapolooza in 93 and it was like 95 degrees that day! Needless to say he took the jacket tie vest and shirt off after playing Would the first song to start the show! Very charismatic singer and great stage presence! His voice very unique and an unbelievable range! RIP Layne!
That's awesome! I was not around then but I was OBSESSED with the guitar when I was a kid. Which is how I got into rock music lol and Alice. I wouldn't have it any other way ! I do wish my friends were into the music so they would go to shows with me though
The song is about Andy Wood (Mother Love Bone vocalist died in 1990 because heroin overdosed)
It was about the death of Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood. After Wood's death, Mother Love Bone members Stone Gossard (Guitar) and Jeff Ament (bass) recruited Eddie Vedder and became the band we know and love today as Pearl Jam.
Amazing song. RIP Layne and Mike!
4th July 1991
Clash of the Titans
I just graduated HS. Drove my GF in my Pop's Monte to show. Up front for AIC. Announced Slayer (HELL PIT!) next. Me & GF go to gated area. Mike Starr nicer than could ever imagine. Go backstage. Drink beers, meet other artists on tour of a lifetime. Go on AIC tour bus. Layne looks me over and says "Dude, you're even skinnier than I am". I was speechless. Mike tells us "You know about Andrew Wood's passing. We sadly say Yes. Mike says "Our opening song is about Andy. It's called "Wood" but we're gonna spell it WOULD". Mike asks "You wanna hear the new Mother Love Bone?"...proceeds to play us unreleased Pearl Jam 10 album in bus. I'll NEVER forget Mike Starr's generosity and kindness. RIP Mike & Layne and thank you for a memory of a lifetime ❤❤
This song was about the death of Andrew Wood, lead singer of Mother Love Bone. You guys should definitely check out Mother Love Bone. "Stardog Champion", "Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns", "Stargazer", "Bone China", or "Gentle Groove" would all be solid choices.
MLB is soooo great!
layne is one of my fav people to listen to. layne sounds like 100 angry lost souls when he sings. also he reminds me of my heroin days when i felt just like layne wanting to just die from drugs. but i got clean but their music brings me back to that and helps me with my recovery. this band brings tears when i listen to them it bring me to why i got clean. i know how layne felt to want togo out that way. great video guys.
God bless you and keep you clean. One day at a time, brother. ✌🏼
@@snakeinthegrass7443 thank you thats what i do lol all we can do
Great reaction and commentary!! Love seeing you appreciate that shy, misunderstood kid...that became one of the greatest vocalists of all time. RIP...LS.
Love your appreciation for alice boys. They're the best grunge band ever and you can't find a single bad track from them. Facelift, Dirt, Flies in a jar, Tripod are all incredible albums, crazy talent in that group! And ofcourse Layne was one of a kind and untouchable !
More Alice in Chains, PLEASE!!!
MAD SEASON is a solo project/ band that Layne Staley and Mike McCready from Pearl Jam did together, I've read that Layne wasn't happy about the amount of his material wasn't being used for ALICE IN CHAINS
You guys just found what I held dear to my heart as a kid. Welcome to my childhood fellas
Proud of you, Hollywood! I went through that from the outside with my mom and I learned what you said. Addicts will only get better when they decide they want to. Much respect to you for doing it and being here today making some of my favorite YT content!
Yep! As with everything in life- you are really the only one who can help yourself. It sucks to realize that but it can be very empowering as well.
Banger!! Once again reminding us of the power of Layne and how he’s missed today 🌹❤️
The soundtrack to the movie 'Singles' was released on June 30, 1992. 'Would' was a single released from the album on the same date. MTV was still in its heyday. Historical date.
great soundtrack, not so great movie
Now check out Mother Love Bone Chloe Dancer / Crown of Thorns.
Great reactions as always.
RIP Layne ❤️
RIP Andrew Wood ❤️
First time watching your channel , you mentioned how his voice is , there is a version of this on youtube with just his vocals nothing else , search his vocals for would only , and it is unbelievable , it is totally amazing! Will give you chills totally, he easily one of the best voices ever!
"DONT FOLLOW" it's one of my favorite songs of theirs. Rarely reacted to by people. Check it out sometime.
Don’t Follow is my favorite!!!!
@@jeremeywilson2318 it's such an emotional, clean and gritty piece all at the same time! That harmonica puts it over the top for me.
Hell yeah brethren. 13/10 content. Y’all should do the Korn version of this. It’s kinda heavy dudes. Either way, keep it up!
And thank you!
This was the first AIC song I heard while browsing a music store about a decade ago. It was playing over the speakers and I immediately fell in love and purchased the Dirt album then and there. I’ve been in love with AIC ever since. Great reaction guys 🙋🏻♀️👍🏼🙌🏼👏🏼💜🇨🇦
Probably my fave AIC song. That hook though! Great to hear it.
RIP LS. What a true talent as was the whole band !!
Yep rip to Mike too. Sucks that they all struggled so much. Im glad the rest of the band is doing better now. And that they can keep creating with William 😊 A great story of resilience
I love this song so much!!
Jerry wrote a lot of their earlier material. Over the band's career, Layne started writing more and more of the lyrics. Overall Jerry was/is the main songwriter, but Layne had his share of songwriting credits.
I love Jerry as a songwriter! Layne was of course amazing. But I love almost every Jerry song, including his solo albums. Although I'll admit Boggy Depot is kind of underwhelming as an album haha
It’s a tribute song to the late singer of mother love bone Andrew Wood.
"Would?" is a play on words for the leader of Mother Love Bone Andrew Wood, who died of heroin overdose on the eve of his band's stardom. He was beloved by the entire Seattle music community and the inspiration for Chris Cornell's Temple of the Dog album. This was Jerry's own tribute to Andrew around the same time.
Proud of you Hollywood! Keep fighting the good fight!
Remember seeing this live on Jools Holland BBC2 in '92 I think, with Them Bones.
When I was a teenager we had Dirt, FNM Angel Dust, Sepultura Chaos AD, Beastie Boys Check Your Head, Nirvana Nevermind, Pantera Vulgar Display Of Power, Metallica Black Album, GNR Use Your Illusions.... God we were spoilt rotten in the early to mid 90's.
SOOOO glad y'all got to my absolute fave AIC song (besides What The Hell Have I)!!!!
In my opinion, it's the epitome of grunge, the 90s, AIC, Layne/Jerry, etc. Totally dig that y'all picked the video too! Kinda adds to the songs from this era, whether you were there or not.
Seriously underrated riff in that song. I wanted to learn to play it so bad when I was a kid haha. So cool. I love the simplicity of Jerry's guitar. Like it is simple and complicated at the same time.
One of my favorite songs by AIC, just incredible and emotional. Love the dual vocals of Layne & Jerry. The chorus gives me goosebumps still to this day
When their first album came out "Facelift" I became a fan but when "Dirt" came out, they became my favorite band. Any song off "Dirt" is awesome. I have a few suggestions: "Again", "What the Hell Have I", or some of their newer stuff with William Duvall as lead singer: "Check My Brain", "Never Fade" or "All I Am".
What the hell have I main riff is one of the best riffs ever, shit is glorious and never gets old. Jerry is a genius guitarist and songwriter
"Again" is an underappreciated song, for sure.
All great songs!
I love how you guys analized this song, such a beautiful piece of art.
8:17 that key shift gets me every time. Such a brilliant tonal choice.
Jerry is the brains and sound of AIC. Sorry folks. We all LOVE Layne. He is a legend and icon. I can't and won't take anything from him. He was amazing; but, Jerry is the sound that we all love from this band. I would say that Jerry wrote 90% of their music, probably more.
He is an amazing writer and guitarist. One of my favorite musicians.
I would like to add to this. I saw AIC in Sept 2022 and the vibe was right.. sucked that Layne and Mike weren't there but damn the music carried their spirits throughout the venue.. The vocal were different but sang with respect and honoring our lost brothers.. I think this is because Jerry and Sean (who started the band BTW) made sure this was the case.
I was supposed to see AIC in 94 with Metallica, Silverchair, Suicid-al Tendencies but Layne had relapse issues and they cancelled... still was a great concert but it could have been the greatest..
Lyrically it’s was like a 55/45 split in laynes favor mainly because he did 9/12 of the lyrics on tripod, before that it was pretty much split evenly lyrically with Jerry being credited on every single song except head creeps hate to feel and angry chair, those are the 3 songs Layne is the sole writer of. Meanwhile jerry is the sole writer of pretty much all their most iconic songs and then was the primary writer of the music on pretty much every other song. Layne rules and was my favorite singer and an all time great vocalist but Jerry was 100% always the mastermind of AIC musically. Would?/down in a hole/them bones/rooster/no excuses/brother/right turn/grind/over now/heaven beside you/don’t follow/sea of sorrow/damn that river all are some of the songs Jerry wrote entirely as sole songwriter. Guy is a genius and deserves all the praise, there is no AIC ever without Jerry, even tho Layne was amazing and Sean and Inez etc also kickass Jerry has always been the most important member of the band by a significant margin, it still surprises me how many people I see think lyrics Jerry wrote were actually written by Layne, like the 4 most iconic songs on their most iconic album were all entirely Jerry. Anyway Jerry is a god tier musician in my book and the pairing with Layne was magical. Still fuckin love me some AIC even post Layne tho, Jerry don’t miss in my book. RIP Layne, left behind a great legacy in a short period of time
@@diydan2213 facts, AIC still kicks ass live and they’re still releasing great music, I love Layne he was my favorite singer ever but Jerry is a truly special musician and songwriter and as long as he’s around running the show and writing the music AIC will continue to release good music and continue to put on great shows, AIC is still alive and well.
Jerry and Layne grew together in those early days. Jerry picked up so much from Layne. And they both wrote many songs together. The song writing was divided pretty equal. They grew together musically with there harmonics they couldn't be touched. STP. PJ. Mad Season, Sound Garden. Temple of the Dog was a short lived band that had the Great Harmonics. but AIC was one of a kind, with Jerry and Layne beautiful sound.
@@gerggbergr8976 the songwriting was never equal, lyrically it was about 50/50 until tripod where Layne wrote lyrics for 9/12, musically it was almost all Jerry their entire history with some contributions Sean/mike/Inez to the music. Layne didn’t write any music until dirt where he wrote hate to feel and angry chair, those 2 along with head creeps are the 3 songs Layne is the sole writer of and the 3 he wrote musically, outside of that it’s pretty much all Cantrell, he was the sole or primary songwriter of the music on every single other AIC song, also outside of man in the box all their biggest hits were solely Jerry songs like would?/down in a hole/them bones/rooster/bleed the freak/sea of sorrow/no excuses and all their other hits. I agree Jerry and Layne was a magical duo and they absolutely couldn’t be touched, once in a lifetime pairing, and both absolute legends. That being said the songwriting was never even. Anyway RIP Layne, one of the best vocalists ever and a great lyricist too.
I noticed a long time ago Jerry wrote pretty much all the hits
Yup, outside of Layne doing the lyrics for man in the box almost all their biggest songs were written entirely by Jerry. A lot of people don’t know or don’t realize that and think it was Layne or that Layne at least wrote the lyrics for them
Would be great if you could do some of the newer Alice In Chains with the singer following Layne. Their last album “Rainer Fog” is simply great.
That's William Duvall 🔥🖤
The end of the songs brings me to tears every time. Such a beautifully haunting song. Have I run to far to get home
Song about Andy Wood, Mother Love Bone singer. The whole "Dirt" album is brilliant.
Also was a track on the early 90s movie Singles, comedy/drama set in Seattle with a cameo by Eddie Vedder and members of Pearl Jam in a funny scene. Quality soundtrack with songs by AIC, Smashing Pumpkins, Mother Love Bone, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Pearl Jam
Classic Alice In Chains 🤘🏽🔥🔥🔥
You guys gotta check out Get Born Again I believe it’s the last song they recorded before Layne’s unfortunate passing it’s another Great Alice In Chains song
Yeah its a banger
The drum fills at the end of this song are magnificent
Morning y'all! Such a great great song! God I loe his voice! And the bass is awesome! One of my favs! Great choice!🤓❤️
When I was a teenager, Alice in Chains was my jam. This song is still awesome today. 💥❤️🔥🎧🎶🥁
Love it!!!! Greatest era of music in my opinion
For sure
💯
R.I.P. Michael Starr ripping that bassline...R.I.P. Layne.
The backstory with WOULD? ... guitarist Jerry Cantrell wrote the song for Andy Wood, singer of Mother Love Bone after Andy died of an overdose in 1990 just as Mother Love Bone was going to hit big. After Andy died, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament dissolved Mother Love Bone and re-emerged as Pearl Jam. WOULD? as a title is a play on Andy Wood's name. Layne sang the hell out of WOULD? and ROOSTER on the album, official videos and concerts in 91-93.
WOULD? appeared on the Singles soundtrack because Seattle, Washington as big as the town is, musically it's a small town. All the bands that came out of the Seattle scene knew each other and went to see each other play the club circuit. Cameron Crowe was married to Nancy Wilson of Heart and he wanted to make a movie about the Seattle music scene and made Singles where a fictional band, Citizen Dick opened for Alice In Chains. They used IT AIN'T LIKE THAT from the Facelift album and Cameron Crowe gave them money to demo songs... AIC took the money, they demoed the 6 acoustic songs that are on SAP EP and two songs ROOSTER and WOULD? that ended up on the Dirt album. Cameron Crowe picked through the songs and used WOULD? out of the bunch. Jerry thought the song was strong enough to be included on the Dirt album and that's how WOULD? ended up on the Singles soundtrack and the same version ended up on Dirt.
Whenever you see Bad Animals Studios in the liner notes, at the time the album was recorded, Bad Animals Studios was owned by Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart. Nancy Wilson was married to Cameron Crowe between 1986 and 2010.
Drummer Sean Kinney developed that heavy kick-drum at the formation of Alice In Chains. That heavy kick-drum is the foundation of AIC's sound.
Guitarist Jerry Cantrell was fine doing backing vocals on the early songs like the ones they played in their clubbing days and on Facelift like the Call and Return of the chorus on MAN IN THE BOX until one day when he was trying to write songs for the SAP EP and the Dirt album, Layne looked at the lyrics and encouraged Jerry to sing more because after all, they were Jerry's lyrics. He should sing them. When Layne and Jerry sang together they achieved the perfect pitch of two voices making one voice.
Layne Staley's vocal range can run rings around any other grunge singer in my opinion. Layne could sing the phone book and never hit a wrong note. Even at the end of his life, with no teeth and a lisp, his voice, wit and humor were all still there. Layne's voice and vocal range was so powerful he did NOT need auto tune or pro-tools until he lost his teeth and had a lisp around 1998, and even then he still killed the vocals.
Barrett Martin (who played with Layne in Mad Season) said that when he stood to the side of the stage, he could hear the sound of Layne’s vocal resonance come out of Layne's body LOUDER than it did coming out of the speakers, Layne's voice was that powerful.
The Unplugged show in 1996 is so heartbreaking to watch because he was deep in his heroin addiction (and yes, I know he was other drugs). His liver was damaged from the years of drug use. He was just high enough to do the show so he didn't get dope sick and to chase away withdrawal symptoms. He was such a ghost of himself during Unplugged. (Of course, Jerry had food poisoning) All Jerry saw when he looked over at Layne was his best friend was going to die soon due to Layne's choices for his life. That show was filmed on April 10, 1996, premiered in May 1996. They did four shows with KISS in June-July 1996, after which Layne survived an overdose and became a recluse. After that, it was a 6-year-long slow suicide.
Before the show, drummer Sean Kinney and bass player Mike Inez argued with guitarist Jerry Cantrell about whether Layne could even pull off the high notes in some of the songs, which is why Jerry gave them that “I told you so” smirk after Layne hit that long, high note in DOWN IN A HOLE. He did the same thing again when he hit a high note in ROOSTER.
The fact that Sean and Mike didn’t have any confidence that Layne could do the show and Jerry being the only one that knew deep in his heart that Layne could do it because Layne had done so many things against the odds over the years no matter how high he was at the time. When Jerry needed him to be there where it counted, Layne always pulled through.
The entire show was a success because Layne did have a powerful performance despite his condition. He proved to his cynical bandmates that he could still sing the high notes and he pulled it all off beautifully while the same four guys (Metallica) who had mocked him for his addiction sidelining Alice In Chains from ever doing extended tours sat in the front row. The mistakes he made screwing up SLUDGE FACTORY 8 times even though the dvd only shows 1 time (and I think he screwed up GOT ME WRONG once or twice, but Toby Wright didn’t keep that in editing) were endearing, at least to me. They didn’t take away from the performance, it added something to the performance that, had it been removed after everyone had seen it, wouldn’t have made the show what it was.
Knowing what Layne was capable of before, and what you see on Unplugged is the difference between night and day. Watch him sing DOWN IN A HOLE and knowing that this was the same guy who back in 1992 was hanging from the rafters of a low ceiling in a bar belting out LOVE HATE LOVE, that is what's heartbreaking. Knowing how he sang ROOSTER in Tilburg, The Netherlands, in 1993 when his “yeahs” and screams were so loud and high I’m surprised the rafters didn’t come crashing down around him and then watch him sing the same song so low-key on Unplugged knowing he could do to the song what he did in Tilburg is heartbreaking. Knowing he initially sang the hell out of WOULD? on the official video and album and seeing the end of WOULD? on Unplugged . . . and knowing how deep into his addiction he had gotten by that point is heartbreaking.
Mike Starr (who is in the video) was the first bass guitar player. He left the band after Rock in Rio January 22, 1993 (long story). Mike Starr was the last person to see Layne alive on April 4, 2002. They had an argument and Starr left. No one noticed Layne had died on April 5, 2002, because he never answered the phone nor opened the door. It took inactivity over the span of two weeks for his ACCOUNTANT to notice something was wrong and called Alice In Chains manager Susan Silver who called Layne's mother to alert her to the situation who then called 911 on April 19, 2002. Mike Starr died of a prescription drug overdose on March 8, 2011.
And to pour salt in the wound, MTV (and the music industry) has more or less blackballed Layne (and yet, they laud over Kurt Cobain every April 5th, because Kurt was the "face of grunge", meanwhile Layne gets a "by the way"). The Grammys went so far as to invite Jerry, Mike and Sean to the Grammy show in 2003 and then refused to put Layne's picture up in the memorial of the musicians who died in 2002. (Or they "forgot" to) which pissed Jerry, Mike and Sean off and they walked out on the show. Though I do applaud MoPOP including Layne Staley and Mike Starr when they inducted Alice In Chains in the MoPOP Museum of Pop Culture. It's more recognition of Layne (and Mike) than the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (thanks to Rolling Stone's criticisms of Layne and his addiction) and the Grammys (who FORGOT him when he died) have EVER done.
Layne's story is more tragic and haunting because you can actually watch and hear him deteriorate over the 12-year span: from the mild use of drugs in 1990 all the way through 1996 when he was deep into a heroin addiction to dropping to 90 pounds by 1998 to 86 pounds when he died in 2002. Layne kept his humor and wit even to the end of his life.
All the information above has longer, deeper stories, and I could say so much more, but CZcams has a cap on comment length. In the end, it all boils down to: Layne Staley deserved better than what he received from the people around him who he thought mattered. He wrote songs about things with maturity and knowledge well beyond his years. He didn’t deserve to be turned into tabloid cannon fodder by the press.
Been listening to this for years and it gives me shivers every time, if it doesn't make me cry. So sad, so beautiful
Didn't realize someone had already commented on this but it was a tribute to lead singer Andrew Wood from Mother Love Bone, another Seattle area band that came before all the big names. Wood died of a heroin overdose in 1990 before the scene blew up.
Remaining members went on to perform with Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder in Temple of the Dog and Pearl Jam after that.
"Would" is my all time favorite AIC song.... If you'd like to check out more of Layne's vocals, but in a different style, check out his side project, Mad Season. They only had one album, but it's fantastic! Maybe start with the song, "River of Deceit"
I like "I Don't Know Anything" too! Really heavy song. Good lyrics too
This song was in a trailer for the show Punisher. It sounds different but also bad ass. Do yourselves a favor and watch it.
There are multiple trailers for that show with different songs but, it's worth the search.
It's just another great vocal delivery from the late great Layne Staley. I will always be his fan.
Great track! The bassline is so groovy
A lot of the scenes in the music video is from the movie "Singles" which was a pretty good movie but had probably the best grunge soundtrack ever.
This song & It Ain't Like That were in the movie Singles. Great movie about the Seattle scene at the time with songs from Alice, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, etc.
Ugh I love it ain't like that!
Congrats on the recovery, stay strong 6ix
Love this song
Seeing people like ya'll react to AIC makes me cry every time.
One of my favorite songs of all time 💯🔥
What an incredible exclamation point to the end of Dirt. Though Would? is an eternal question. The second time you listen to the album back to back, the true meaning behind it just feels so much darker. RIP Layne
They were on MTV all the time and radio!!!! I I feel this is the greatest grunge and my favorite !!!! I just love it!!!
Hell ya love U reacting to all these good "old " bangers ! Rooster next by this band plz ! WTH just do the whole album , Its so awesome !
Omg good morning I adore this song. Have a good weekend 6 and Smokey! Mad love!
This song is on the soundtrack to the movie "Singles". There are actually posters for the movie in the video.
Alice In Chains - heaven beside you
So in volleyball, dump means the player dinks the ball over the net. Floater means the server has served tha ball which has no spin a bit like a knucklbeall in baseball. A wipe in volleyball is when a setter or the hitter senses the pressure of a defender (or block), therefore they hit the ball into the defender's hands, with the intention that the ball will go out of bounds.
this has always been one of, if not the number 1 favorite track of mine from Alice In Chains ❤💜🖤
It’s a classic and an iconic song but I think they got some better songs even if they aren’t as legendary as this one
Also, horse racing is known as the Sport of Kings. Sort of related. Anyways, have a great day and I hope everyone is being as safe as possible in this storm we are having on the east coast. Have a Blessed Day y'all.
Would? The BEST of the 90s Grunge. I didnt get into it back in the day. BUT I loved Alice....
Layne was a F**king bad ass beautiful soul (R.I.P.).
Would was written as a tribute to Andrew wood. A friend that fronted the band mother love bone. He passed in 1990.
Andrew Wood OD. AIC with Layne nothing compares ... They were my favorite band in the mid 90s. RIP Layne
I'm back in a massive alice in chains phase at the moment, glad it brought me here. You guys "get it" 🤘🏻
this and Brother are my favorite AIC songs
You guys pretty much got it. Many people have mentioned the inspiration of the song being Andy Wood's unexpected death. The name of the song is a play on words with his last name, and Jerry being frustrated with the judgement surrounding people relapsing/over-dosing hence the "try to see it once my way." The "broken by my master" I think speaks to being an addict, controlled by the substance you're addicted to. The refrain of "into the flood again, same old trip it was back then" is the relapse. The ending of "have i run too far to get home...am i gone...left you here alone" part is the overdose; no coming back. The last line of "if I would (again, play on words) could you?" I think is to speak to this could have happened to any of us. I think he was clean for about 40 days before he copped and got something dirty that took him out. There's a lot of sad circumstance around what happened. His girlfriend drove some people home after work so was a little later than usual and was tortured by the "what ifs," like what if I got home earlier..type stuff. Soundgarden was on tour at the time I believe, and they kept Andy alive until Chris could come home and say goodbye to him before they took him off life support. They were roommates. Hence all the Temple of the Dog stuff Chris wrote after to process/heal from losing his friend. Say Hello to Heaven is about Andy, Reach Down is very obviously describing Andy...lots of that album is Chris processing Andy's death. That's why you also see a couple Pearl Jam members in TOTG, as they were bandmates with Andy in Mother Love Bone. Andy died like a week or a couple weeks before the release of MLB's debut record, Apple, which everyone thought was going to take them to the big time. Layne is wearing Andy's shirt in this video as an homage.
that base line is the definition of badass.
love the fact that this is the last song on the album...great reaction, thank you for the video
Another awesome reaction! Only thing I can suggest is more Alice In Chains😉👍
This video got me liking and subscribing. You guys have great taste in tunes , love that your reviewing great music like this
"Would?" , "Rooster," "Man in the Box" were all radio hits at the time. Probably their three best known songs.
Live version of Love Hate Love from them...You must!!
AIC is one of favorite bands of all time. Saw them in 1990 opening for Van Halen. There’s a great interview with Jani Lane from Warrant about the moment he knew it was time for the Seattle scene.
