  • The Purifi 1ET400a has been garnering a lot praise of late, and even used in NAD's flagship M33. You can get the same chip at about a quarter of the price from VTVamplifier and have a choice of input buffers to suit your tastes. Probably the best bang for buck amplifier of 2020, but how does it compare against the Audiofool's favorite Schiit Aegir? Let's find out in the review, also compared to the Rega Elicit R and Aegirs in Mono in the video.

    One hour with the VTV mono Purifis made me sell my PS Audio M700s for more VTV amps for my other 2 channel and theater room. If only Schiit would give us good 4 ohm power...

      Hope they do make an Aegir Purifi hybrid as I really like the Schiit house sound.

      My M700’s gave up the ghost last week. Depending if they can be repaired. I am debating between a VTV with tube input, 2 aegir mono or a Starke AD4.
      I am leaning towards the VTV for the simple reason that I can play with the tube butter and with the op amps. Good feedback that in your case the VTV was more enjoyable than the M700.
      Man, I wish that review included the tube input option 🙂

    The Purifi amplifiers are the better amplifier, but people like coloration. I have a Purifi amplifier and also a Pass Aleph amplifier. The Pass has a pleasing sound signature, but it definitely colors the sound. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying that, so it does come down to personal taste. I prefer the perfectly neutral Purifi and add in a tube preamp if I want that presentation instead, but that’s just me. The Purifi is so much more versatile, though, because of the efficiency and power it brings to the table and its dead quiet. If you have 95 db sensitive speakers or 85, you’ll be set for life (or even more extreme). 400 watts into 4 ohms with the ability to go into 2 ohms is huge.
    Also, the VTV base level Purifi amplifier is around $900 last I checked, the op amp stages get VERY pricy and I’m not sure they add all that much, but if you go with the eval board make sure it has RF shielding.
    I’m not hating on the Schiit product with all of that said. If you like a ‘warmer’ presentation and can live within the power it provides, it’s a good amplifier. Do consider that you can’t leave an amplifier like that on all of the time.

    • @TheAudiofool
      @TheAudiofool  Před 3 lety +1

      Yup, it is a very good amp for most everyone if they find the right pre-amp/op amp.

    • @intrinsicfreedom
      @intrinsicfreedom Před 2 lety +1

      I disagree on the "warmth" of the Schiit Aegir. It's largely neutral and able to reveal subtlety in spades. If you have efficient speakers, it's hugely attractive for the price.

      Thanks for watching. You can just get the basic and cheapest one and just find a preamp to tune to your preference. I've reviewed the 5si and Atom, but not really feeling Naim as it's a bit too forward for me. The sound is actually quite good, I just feel it's a bit more premium cost in it's price class. If I do find a good deal on an XS3 or Super 3, maybe I will.

    Are the LS50s your daily driver? I'm curious how your assessment would change if you were testing with speakers with woofers that go down to 30-40 hz.

    • @TheAudiofool
      @TheAudiofool  Před 3 lety +1

      THanks for watching. The LS50s are my speakers in the dining room, but I use it as my reference since I think most people have heard one and so would have a better idea if i say the ls50 is more forward in the mids, etc; currently using devore o93 for the listening room. If you mean that if all the speakers I used, were too forward or too V shaped, or extremely deviated from a flat response, then yes, it will affect my personal opinion. But again as I mentioned, the Purifi are perfectly neutral and super clean and transparent; if you are after a flat response curve the Purifi have no competition except for the benchmark ahb2 and other similarly measuring amps from Hypex.

    “You get a super clean..lick off the amplifier clean power.” lol Nice! You should check out the NAD M33 and C298 which also uses the Purifi Eitgentakt modules. I love my NAD :)I think the best way is to combine a clean tube pre-amp with one of these clean Eigentakt class D amps for power. Then you get your cake and eat it too. You can try for example the Shiit Freya plus paired with this class D power amp and compare that to your pair of Agirs. I think the tube/class D combo will beat it.

    • @TheAudiofool
      @TheAudiofool  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for watching. I do have the Freya+ but don't really like tubes; though I've only tried the default tubes and RCA black plates. I have a NAD C658 coming which I do plan on pairing with the Purifi for my living room.

    Class 'D' needs a good preamp to shine, once that happens it's just about unbeatable. PS Audio's 1200 mono blocks running a tube stage basically prove that. Class 'D' is the amp of the future, they'll just keep getting better and better.

    • @TheAudiofool
      @TheAudiofool  Před 3 lety +3

      Thanks for watching! Agree, these are the amps of the future, super efficient high powered super low distortion. All amps need a good pre-amp, whether it's passive or powered, as long as it delivers the sound to our tastes.... especially since the low distortion really makes the music transparent and neutral.

    Saga is not balanced, cannot be used with Purifi. The VTV Purifi mono amps have bigger power supplies for the purist sound-wise and don't cost much more than the stereo model. The Aegir are space heaters, and not recommended for 4 ohm loads in mono, right?

    • @TheAudiofool
      @TheAudiofool  Před 3 lety +1

      You can use saga with the purifi using an RCA to XLR adapter though this would reduce voltage quite a bit and may need to turn the volume knob more. Currently using the bluesound node 2 directly with it in my TV setup.
      As for the mono Aegirs, haven't had a problem yet with all the speakers I've tried but don't really play at max volume in my listening room so perhaps they're not stressed out that much.

    • @TheAudiofool
      @TheAudiofool  Před 3 lety

      If they put it in too small enclosure, it can get warm even hot. LIke my 7498E, it gets warm after a few hours. The Purifi also gets warm if I put it in an enclosed cabinet display without exhaust fans. Even more so during summer. Until they can make 100% efficient amps, the enclosure and your ambient temp can still make it warm/hot.
