- From the second the music began playing, I knew there was something special about the sound from the Auidiophonics HPA-S400ET. I have never heard a Class D amplifier sound like this. At 2x400W 4 Ohm I knew I was going to have some fun!

Great video Mike! Excellent looking unit with an excellent looking price tag. I LOVE how they arranged the heat sinks.
Hi, Mike. I also read the full review of this amp at ASR, and it ranked right up there with the fantastic Benchmark AHB2, which is more a expensive Class H amp with feedforward error correction, made in the US. The Benchmark also uses an impressive high-wattage output Hypex SMPS, rather than a 'linear' PS. Impressed by both, considering one or the other, weighing in the S&H and $$ exchange rates and the dreaded excise and duty taxes for either of these units to my humble abode in Canada. Thanks for the heads up!
I have heard both and they are both amazing amplifiers. I know that doesn't help bit for the price and value Audiophonics can't be beat.
@@mykandrew Thank you for your feedback, Mike. We live in exciting times for quality gear. Cheers! 🍺🍺
@@mykandrew Agreed. I ended up with 17 chanels worth, a mix of 4, 2 ch and one mono. 😁 Incredible power, control and clarity including 3D audio movies.
Hi Mike, i'm an Happy Audiophonics Customer ... now i know i need one ... ;)
This amp is incredible.
Good and honest review cheers.
Thank you Michael!
I wonder how that compares to the VTV line of Purifi based amps.
I just ordered the slimmer LPA version of this amp from Audiophonics. Hopefully it performs just as well for my use case.
Finally someone who reviewed Audiophonics products. I hope its not the last one, as there must be quite a few people who are aware of them, but don't know how they fair.
Mike, with regards to your comment on the Infinity speakers being somewhat difficult to drive, I'd like to ask of whether your Parasound combo (P6 and A23+) could or couldn't easily drive them? If you tried it, that is.
I have reviewed the A23+ and I think it should be able to drive them however be careful with pushing the low end. They don't call the Infinity's amp killers for nothing! Thank you for the kind words.
@@mykandrew Understood and thanks for the reply! I don't own the Infinity, but since I'm about to get a new pre-power combo and the Para one with its 160W at 8, is on top of my choices, its good to know how it would probably fair with demanding speakers. If you hook those two up, please tell what you found. Cheers!
Hi Mike, have you rolled op amps on this? Woud yoy expect the Sparkos edition to be a significant improvement? Any thoughts on their new purifi based monoblocks?
Hi Mike! I have a pair of atc scm20 loudspeakers with a denon poa t10 power amp.. It sounds a little bit clinical but with airy highs.. recently I tested the rogue audio dragon class D power amp.. for sure it sounds wider and more pleasant but without so airy highs compared to the denon.. Do you think that audiophonics amp will sound dramatically better? Thanks a lot
I've ordered this amp and am waiting for it to appear. Unfortunately there has been an issue with some documentation that was missing, so it is stuck in France. When I get it, for use with my Quad Artera Pre preamp, I hope it will be as good as the reviews I've heard. I am curious though, about the 'Sparkos' upgrades to the interface cards. Is it simply a change to the plug in op amp? What qualities does this bring to the amp's performance, over and above the standard i/f card that is supplied? All answers appreciated.
Update, I finally got te amp and I have to admit it is tremendous value. It's ability to really punch out Bass lines with a huge amount of weight is phenomenal. I would agree with you Mike that the midrange seems a little occluded and I am interested in the upgrade that you spec'd using the Sparkos chips. More details please!
If you get an Audiophonics amp of this design try the Muses 8920 in the interface, I enjoyed the greatly.
That would be an awesome pairing.
I just ordered a 1ET400 amp from Buckeye amps in Ohio for $1190. I believe he uses his proprietary input buffer board. Are you saying that the included Purifi input buffer that came with the EVAL1 sounded a little better than the Audiophonics amp?
I think both are excellent, however I can't really give a definitive answer without swapping OP amps on the Audiophonics. However I did like how open the EVAL1 was straight out of the box. Both are really good. The input stage on the Audiophonics came across very neutral, which is not a bad thing. The EVAL1 just had a bit more life to it. Both measured identically. I think you will be happy with either they are both awesome amplifiers.
HEY MIKE,ON THE WAY TO ME NOW FROM ULTIMATE ELECTRONICS IS AN OLDRE CLASS D DESIGN FROM CARY AUDIO,THE CAA-1.FIRST CLASS D AMP FOR ME.WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS AMP WOULD LOVE YOUR ADVICE ON THIS AMP.KEEP UP THE GREAT VIDEOS.
Hey thanks for the kind words. I built something similar a while back. What speakers are you powering with it?
@@mykandrew Focal Cobalt 816 S,can be bi wired.Cary Audio Amp has bi wireable(4) posts per channel.
@@timothycooley2455 Isn't bi-wiring the same as just using thicker cable? Bi-amping is maybe more useful if you e.g. have two lower powered channels and a speaker needing more juice. I'm doing that with a Topping PA5 feeding one channel to the mid/high and one to the bass of a 3-way speaker.
So what is your pre for this setup? Thanks for the video.
I am currently using a Cambridge EVO150 as a pass through. I am trying to find a proper preamp, I just can't decide on one. Any suggestions?
@@mykandrew I don't know how much you want to spend but schiit Freya plus is pretty great , you get 3 in one, pass through like, jfet, and tubes modes. And you can't beat the inputs and outputs set up. I think tube mode would nicely compliment your class D amp. Cheers
@@blejzerosamigos6115 I have this amp with the Topping PRE90, it's an amazing combination
@@mykandrew I'm using the RME-ADI-2 DAC as a preamp, and it's enough (even in bypass/lowest-gain mode on the Audiophonics) to fill my living room using not-the-most-sensitive speakers (ET Lft 8b). Thanks for your review! I had the same sense of appreciation.
@@dingskydongsky Nice, although what I didn't like about Pre90 is lack of official specs about its input impedance. It turns out Stereophile measured it at 10kΩ SE but oddly only 2kΩ balanced. R2R balanced DAC line-outs are about 600Ω+ output impedance (Ares II: 1250Ω), which is far from recommended 1:10 ratio. You can't drive this preamp well with those. RME ADI-2 FS has 200Ω XLR output impedance, just about 10:1. However, it can drive the Audiophonics in bypass mode with enough gain (x5) and at 20Ω/40Ω output impedance, it can drive Purifi's 2.2kΩ/4.4kΩ input impedance. Which mode do you prefer? Bypass or 7/14db gain?
About Freya+, the downside is it can't drive the Purifi in balanced bypass mode because Freya+ Bal output impedance is 600Ω, too high for Purifi 4.4kΩ. So you must enable Audiophonics input buffer gain (min 7db and 100kΩ) which makes it too much gain in total: (Freya+: 14db + Audiophonics opamp buffer: 7db + Purifi 13db = 34db), maybe using a low potentiometer range and much attenuation with two different gains. The preamp should provide the gain by itself. If you use Purifi's own Eval1 buffer, you can only choose from 14db or 0db.
I'm still looking for a tube preamplifier for this amp with low output impedance and enough gain to bypass the Purifi buffer and give character to the sound.
Bypass mode FTW. :) Well, with Trinnov anyway. :)
👍👍
@@mykandrew 👍
So do you like the amp or not?
Lol
@@mykandrew It looks like we need a retailer here in the US doesn't it.
@@ranbymonkeys2384 Why? They ship here. Great company too, IMO. I have one of their older class D Purifi amps. Sounds great, and very fairly priced too. ✌️
@@amb3cog So I can order one and have it here by Monday that's why. Or maybe to go listen to the damn thing. I see your a business owner, huh?
cost 1500, but you think it sounds like class A (and better), and has a sound ofmaybe 2500$ O wow! shit.
Audiphonics with Purifi 1ET400a class-d amps will maybe sound ok if you play newer music, however it sounds terrible if you play classical music. Piano is really bad, sounds like ringing bells and breaking glass. I do not recommend Audiophonics Purifi amplifiers, it's a very tiring sound.
