  • The Sensah Empire 2x11 speed groupset, super cheap, but does it perform?
When I first came across this groupset, I was a bit wary. I have always ridden Shimano setups on my bikes and have been using my Tiagra 4700 for 4 years and over 20,000 miles. Tiagra is 10 speed however, and the allure of an 11 speed setup was always pretty high.
For example, the majority of lightweight drivetrain upgrades, such as lightweight cassettes and chains, are only available for 11 speed setups.
However, the Shimano 105 groupset is still pretty expensive for my taste, especially for the latest R7000, and Ultegra or Dura Ace are waaaaaay out of my budget, so I decided to take the plunge with Sensah Empire. For just over £80 or $100, delivered to my door, it was difficult to pass up.
The installation was relatively straightforward, but there are a few quirks to the Sensah Empire Shifters that differ from any that I have installed on bikes before. But once you have it set up on the bike, the shifting is surprisingly good. It's very similar to the SRAM double tap system, but takes some getting used to if you have only ever ridden Shimano.
In this video I’ll cover the installation of the Sensah Empire on my bicycle, followed by my verdict on the groupset as a whole.
Got any questions or comments, stick them below 👇 and I'll try and get back to as many of you as I can!

Holy crap. I recently went from Sram 1x11 setup to a Shimano 2x11 and I've been sort of mystified/annoyed by the front mech sometimes rubbing the chain and sometimes shifting lazily (I was beginning to think this is the 2-by life, even with Dura-ace). I had no clue about there being THREE front mech positions! I went out immediately to test it after this video and lo and behold, it works EXACTLY as explained in the video. Proper shifting from here on out now that I actually know how the damn front mech works! Hurrah!
Edit: I'd like to add that I've followed / watched a LOT of cycling-related CZcams channels/videos for a couple years now (yes, all of those "How to shift like a pro" ones when I was starting out, too) and I've never heard the third position before! Could be I've been skipping all the front derailleur stuff because it didn't use to apply to me, I guess.

Decided to go with one of those 'full' sets (which is really just ali sellers putting things together) at 11-28. For anyone interested one important thing to note is that those kits come with 11-32 as well, but the Sensah rear mech is only big enough to go up to 28. Looking forward to putting it all together.

There is a new long cage version of the Sensah rear derailleur now. The pull ratio of the Sensah Empire groupset is identical to the SRAM 1:1 Exact Actuation components. For those who are into mullet shifting for gravel, you can marry it with a SRAM GX10 medium cage rear deraileur and use a 11-42T 11-speed cassette and still maintain a front derailleur.

I like the dual shift levers on old road bikes better than any clicky or twisty device for shifting gears, preferably mounted on the stem shaft rather than the down tube. When I was a kid in the '80s with my cheap 10-speed, I mostly used 1st and 5th gear, and to shift between the two was just one quick motion with the lever on the right-hand side; down as far as it would go for 1st, and up as far as it would go for 5th.

I've been riding the older version about a year and I have no problems at all. This groupset easily performs as well as my 105 group. I've never ridden Ultegra or DuraAce, so I don't know how it compares with those. For me, the problem you demonstrated with the rear derailleur at 21:30 is easily corrected by a small trim shift. I bought the full groupset with the crank, cassette, bottom bracket, etc. Very good performance at a great value. As long as they continue to sell them at this price point, I'll never go back to Shimano.

    @giovannirui7470 Před 4 lety +1

    Hi Luke
I've bought the grey Sensah Empire set 2 years ago for my winter bike. No regrets since I had no issues at all.
The grey version has no trim on the left lever (exactly like Sram) so no double/triple cliks needed to perfectly shift in the front; Grey can shift up to 3 cogs using the right lever and I had not experienced issues like the ones You highlighted.
So if You don't need to trim the front derailleur and to ride Big/Big or Small/Small You will not miss that option using the grey one
Furthermore the grey version is fully compatible with Sram Red/Force 10 or 11 groupsets (i don't know if the black one still is): it means You can use Sram levers to drive the Sensah front/rear derailleur or You can use Sensah levers to drive Sram Red/Force front/rear derailleur. The actuation is exactly the same.
So if You want to upgrade Your existing Sram Red/Force groupset from 10 to 11 speed it is enough for You to buy Sensah Empire levers (50£) only. I tried and I can assure that it works perfectly.
Furthermore I experimented with Shimano parts too and Sensah levers can handle extremely well Ultegra/Dura Ace front derailleurs (8000/9100) as well as Ultegra/Dura Ace (8000/9100) dual pivot caliper brakes. Unfortunately not Shimano rear derailleurs since in terms of cable pull You need + or - 2 cliks to shift one cog.
Since Sensah Empire is not supplied with proprietary brakes You need to choose according to Your braking style.
If You have Sram caliper brakes less cable pull is needed so if You love to hard brake like I do I suggest to use Sram calipers. If not, or if You live on a plane, Shimano brakes are an excellent choice too.
With Sram brakes You have a more responsive/less modular braking while with Shimano brakes You have a less powerfull attack but it is more difficult to block the wheel since You have more cable to pull in order to block
Sram brakes using Sensah Levers : from 0 to blocked wheel in 1.5cm
Shimano brakes using Sensah Levers: from 0 to blocked wheel in 4cm
You can mix parts easily and results are really good.
As far as cassetes for the Empire groupset personally iI think that Shimano Ultegra cassette 11-32 gives the best results in term of shifting/range, at a reasonable price (45£) and Sensah rear derailleur can shift up to 32 natively (or even up to 36 using a hanger extender)
Anyway, for the price the Empire is sold, I sincerely think it is the best You can get (unbeatable value for money).
Please don't even compare it with a 9 speed Tiagra (it is so much easier to have pristine shifting the less cogs You have).
By the way another great video as usually Luke!
    Greetings from the Dolomites

Love the chinarello, keep the vids coming. Regarding the crown race, ot seems like all you needed was to push it down. They make a special tool for that but you can do it with a pvc tube too I believe. Definitely put it back on either way.

      @TraceVelo  Před 4 lety +21

Thanks Illsigvo, glad you like my videos :) But yeah, had so many comments about the crown race, I love it, always sparks up a debate!
But because of all these comments, a couple of hours ago I stripped down the forks again to double check everything, and make sure I wasn't missing anything obvious. The crown race can’t actually be mounted any farther down the fork, it sat directly on a bevelled lip/cone moulded into the carbon fork. Using a mallet and pvc pipe would probably just damage the moulded lip. The bearing sat in exactly the same spot, and the 45 degree bevel on the lower bearing race matched the bevelled lip perfectly, so the preload should remain unchanged. The one benefit of having the crown race, would be an easier bearing removal/replacement, as the bearing is now quite a snug fit, and needs a little pull from the fork. It appears that akin to many Giant frames nowadays, this fork assembly can be setup without a crown race.
But regardless, after all these comments, I’m definitely going to be keeping an eye on it. If anything breaks, I will hang my head in shame, and do one of those CZcams apology videos, unless I’m dead as a result of the breakage of course. In which case I’ll haunt you all on my ghost bicycle… 👻🚲

Trace Velo I’m not 100% convinced by this. The crown race usually needs to be hammered on over a lip on to a wider section, it shouldn’t just “sit” on the fork. It should be flush with the crown of the fork (hence crown race).

Congrats on your headset bearing matching the integrated crown race. I replaced a fork with a Ritchey WCS gravel fork with an integrated race, but unfortunately the race is at a different angle than the bearing (30 degree vs 45 degree), so I have to use the crown race that came with the headset (and have a little gap). I could have installed a Ritchey WCS headset, or saved $50 and lived with the gap. Gap it is.

Mate just built up a bike with this groupset on. It's paired with a new Ultrega cassette, secondhand FSA crankset and Sram 11 speed chain. Does need the inline barrel adjusters for peace of mind in the set-up, only thing he would change is the chain for a KMC one instead. First ride and Sunday evening and could not fault it, just needs a 1.5mm adjustment on the front mech that's all. Would buy it again.

Ah - the "integrated crown race." I came across that for the first time on my last bike build. The fork incorporates the correct diameter and taper to seat the bearing, eliminating the need for a separate crown race. I'm not sure there is any benefit except to the bike manufacturer - it eliminates a step in bike assembly, saving time and potential for errors.

If I make sure to hear the 2nd click, the derailleur shifts from the 1st cog to the 3rd. I've messed with the H-limit and cable tension a million times and still have that one peculiar shift that doesn't match the rest. Any ideas?

Love my Sensah 1X 11 speed drop bar groupset. Shifts cleanly*. 1 lever controls upshifting, downshifting and braking. Super easy, but both Shimano and SRAM users will need an explanation ahead of time, since it's a combo of both types of shifting. I've actually recommended Sensah to somebody that had an amputated right hand because they could push their nub to both upshift and downshift with a big lever, rather than trying to try and hit the tiny little shift lever on Shimano and SRAM to shift.
*: There's a single gear that when downshifting it tries, and fails, to double-shift on my particular bike + shifter while going up hills, but other than that it's been flawless. I probably need to give the barrel adjuster a quarter turn. Maybe it's technique, since it only really happens on one "hill."
The 3 click "double-downshift" does interfere with my handlebar bag though. It's quite a stretch, to be honest.
