    The best of all-time, period. Great offensive force, as well as great defensive force. Orr could dictate the entire pace of play throughout the game. Was simply not fair when he was out there. One of the classiest athletes on the ice and maybe the classiest superstar the sports world has ever witnessed off the ice. A very special individual - both teammates and opponents admired him. If only the medical world was more advanced during his reign - we would have witnessed another decade of dominance.

      Vicki Woodard Sorry Vicki it’s not even close. I know both well. Orr was a good defenceman in a watered down era of beer league hockey with only but a couple of European players. Plus Orr wasn’t durable enough to play even full regular seasons let alone 20 years. Oh and 99 had about 2,000 more points. Yes that’s not a typo. (Orr 915 the Great one 2,857).

    Ken Dryden, Canadiens goalie, gave the greatest description (explanation) of Orr's greatness I've heard. He said that when he saw Orr coming at him from maybe 120-150 feet away, it was as if everybody was playing the game at one speed, and Orr was playing it at a speed and a half faster. And Dryden said he found it very disorienting. Then he would start to see his defenseman back-peddling frantically, and his forwards were chasing, sometimes diving, to try and defend as Orr charged at him. And then he would get that brief butterfly feeling in the pit of his stomach and say a short prayer if he had time.....

      Nice comments from NYR. Fans, true gentlemen. I've noticed the further we get away from the time Orr played the less respect he gets. I respect other people's oppinions on why they think so, and so is A better player, and they definitely have strong arguments to base their oppinions, and there are times when I still will make comparisons to post Orr era players but........ Orr still wins in the end. The biggest standpoint that I always go back to, and there is NO comparable player when comes to this, and that is......Bobby Orr was the complete Hockey Player.
      When I say complete I mean that he did EVERYTHING!!! I'm not going to name the things because if A person was trying to make An argument about such, and such player being better because they did such, and such better or they did something unbelievable that supposedly no one else could do
      all I have do is pick out the one thing, or multiple things that they don't do, and then I have the irrefutable, undeniable, End All answer, everytime......
      .........Bobby Orr did it.

      ....And he was the most modest, self- deprecating, personable human being. I know, many athletes were very kind, and out going, but Orr was that way to A fault, and it's true, he put almost blind faith into people, the whole Eagleson affair was truly sickening. If you haven't read Orr's book "My Story" (came out maybe 5 to 10 yrs. ago?) Do yourself A favor, and pick it up, I've read many Biographies, and plenty of hockey bio's they can be run of the mill, but Orr's book is the best. He was modest, and guarded so he kept his mouth shut Basically all of his life, well in the book he gets quite frank, and when he finally spoke on subjects you got the feeling that he had been holding his emotions back on all of the highly publicized topics and wanted to vent, and tell his true feelings but always took the high road. Great Book! Highly recommend for anybody, but A Hockey fan would really enjoy it.

      A few years ago, I picked up Bobby Orr's autobiography. The guy spent almost the whole book writing about other people, and almost no time discussing himself. He's just that kind of person. He doesn't want to draw attention to himself. He's modest and a gentleman to a fault almost. Orr may have been the greatest ever to lace up skates, but he is just as good of a human being.
      Well, one guy "benefited" from Orr's retirement, in a manner of speaking anyway: The under-appreciated Brad Park. Park may have set a record for most second-place finishes in the Norris Trophy voting, because of all of the times Orr won it. How ironic that the long-time Ranger wound up with Boston, and long-time Bruin Phil Esposito wound up on Broadway wearing a Ranger's sweater.
      It broke my heart when Bobby Orr retired, not just on general principles, but also because I'm a Blackhawks fan, and Orr was then on the Hawks. We got to see him in a tantalizingly small number of games, and that was that.

  • @stratovani

    Orr's sudden acceleration surprised the Czech defensemen. He's coasting up past the red line, then BOOM! He's at full speed in just a couple of strides! Walks in and scores on a beauty of a backhand shot.

    • @bbb462cid
      @bbb462cid Před 6 lety +6

      Exactly. Orr saw the defenseman get lazy for a split second, shifted gears and without looking like he was trying, added just enough speed to make the defesnseman a non-factor. Such a smart play and a great example of his deceptive acceleration.

      I read in Orr's book, if you played him to tight at the blueline, he cut to the outside and was so strong he could cut back in between you and the goalie, and hold you off. If you gave him too much room, the slap shot was unleashed. Nice to see the other Bobby get a little credit, he was the dominant player before arrived.

    It was state of the art hockey and Bobby Orr had no equal. That goal was routine for him. It was run of the mill for him. To compare with anything today you would have to look at the goal that Nathan Mackinnon scored recently here in the 2022 playoffs against St. Louis in game 5, end to end rush with a magnificent deke and shot. Now for him to get to Orr's level he would have to do those in a routine run of the mill fashion like. JMHO lol. I'll get the shit from the millenials for this comment I'm sure lol.

      @@kidpoker9408 - Wayne Gretzky is obviously and without question the greatest point-producer in the history of the NHL. But that is not the same thing as saying he is the finest player ever or the most-complete player ever. Gretzky lacked the physical strength and grit to his game possessed by guys like Howe and Orr, and unlike Orr, Howe, Hull, etc. Gretzky virtually never fought for himself. Marty McSorley or someone like him always did it for him. Nor was he known for the caliber of his fore/back-checking, or his defense generally. "Playing D" was an after-thought for those great Oiler teams of the 1980s. Wayne never won a Selke Trophy - I don't even know if he was ever nominated. Why would he be? He was paid to produce offense, to produce points, and lead that offense - and that's what he did. Orr and Howe were better-rounded players, more-complete as hockey players. Orr could do everything; there were no holes in his game, nothing lacking. And he did everything at an elite, other-worldly level. As Flyers center and future Hall of Famer Bobby Clarke once said, it was as if there needed to be a league higher than the NHL in which Bobby Orr could play.
