A friend has a Coleman hot tub from 1994 and the controller has failed. It's a strange failure and I think I can modify the controller and add a hacked in a cheap Chinese temperature control module along with a switch to turn the jets on/off while still using 90% of the original control board.
In part 1 video I review the hot tub failure and a possible hack solution.

In part 2 video I setup a test rig and evaluate what is functional and reusable on the original control board. Then I test out an override hack that will let me control the defunct features using a simple 5 volt control line.

In part 3 video I test the final hacked hot tub control at the bench.

In part 4 of 4 video I test the hack in the hot tub and heat up the 300 gallon tub using my 2005 DIY Redneck Pool Heater from 72F to 104F in 50 minutes.

have you done anything with communication between the panel and top side controller? I'd like to interface mine with a wireless control from my phone with controlling temp and pump action. I have a Connect-tech spa pac with a Orca Bay topside control with a 4 wire cable between them.

    Hi Todd,
I enjoyed this series! You sir have some scary skills! 😉

True, I scare myself sometimes. Mostly when I get in over my head and start thinking... "Oh Shit what just happened". But as long as I don't kill myself or hurt anybody I guess I'm learning. ;)

Big Clive has an interesting collection of gadgets to heat water. It seems simply sticking wall power directly into water makes it boil.

Yes, I have seen his video on such. Scary.

Neat. It looks like you used steel wire to make your coils. Steel and copper are dissimilar metals and holes will form in your pipe. It may be worth your while to re wire with copper.

Would be best but still working fine with no problems.

I know right! I'm here. Busy with work. My company got bought at the end of 2016 so 2017 has been a lot of getting to know my new jobs in the new company. Maybe I should push up a quick update video?

I would guess off the top of my head about 35 KW ?

Thank goodness most hard-drug tweakers are too distracted to find your video talking about a massive pile of copper. Better they find abandoned structures to vandalize by ripping out copper wire and pipe to sell for their habit. Us non-drug types just don't unnerstand an addiction that drives people to think up such BS.

What's up with the annoying music at 1:08? Your TIMEX is obviously malfunctioning at 6:25! Perhaps you should make a video on how to fix that...

HA! touché MAT. I put in some music that CZcams provides to fill dead air. No head banging guitar smashing tunes just a little jingle to pass some dead air. I shouldn't get a copy right hit because this is from CZcams's free to use music file list. Well, I did get a monitory grab once using a tune from the list so it can still happen but I have used this one many times now without such problems. Just my luck now if they sell the tune or something and I'll have to take down and re-upload 1/2 of my videos to get my monetization back. That happened to a few of my videos about a year ago. You can never be sure when you put music in a video.

I was excited...but I kinda got lost in vid 3 lol...omg..gotta ask how much did you charge your neighbour for all this crazy intricate circuitry /work?

    • @ToddFun
      @ToddFun  Před 5 lety

Nothing. We are ham buddies and we do things for each other all the time. Just what friends do.

Lol, I was teasing, I think I need new friends!?🤔😂lol
How might, can I do something like this ..on a 110vt Softub spirit 4 tub, sold at Costco in 2014 and the motor and the circuits etc are housed within the side of this model, not on a exterior motor pack? 🙏

@@tman6663 Couldn't really say. There is 100,000 ways it may need to go before one would know the best option.

Todd Harrison You’re telling me Todd! Lol I finally got topside control to display/work now...had to solder circuit underneath circuit board. But now ....lol it’s the GFCI Plug that worked/reset before, but now it won’t let me reset from module now...argh 🤬🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️🙄 lol
