There's a fart joke that most people don't get: the governor's name is "Lepetomane". "Le pet" is French for fart and "Le Petomane" was the stage name of a French music hall entertainer in the latter 19th century and early 20th century (if memory serves correctly) who had amazing voluntary control over his sphincter and could fart tunes, animal noises etc. He enjoyed a period of wild popularity.
Special thanks to mom also for recognizing Count Basie! Most reactors either don't recognize him or don't know who he is!
One other frequently missed joke: when Mongo rides into town on the bull one of the locals (guy who looks Mexican) says "Mongo....Santa Maria!" Mongo Santa Maria was a famous Cuban drummer.
This is one of my favorite movies and have been watching it for nearly 40 years. I get most of the in-jokes and seemingly throwaway lines... but I hadn't known about these two... thanks for that!!
Also, almost every western has the cowboys eating beans on the trail.

Frankie Laine, known for singing classic TV and movie Western themes (like TV's Rawhide), is here singing the Blazing Saddles theme song. "He rode a blazing saddle" is itself funny because riding a blazing saddle would certainly be painful. Madeline Kahn's character and accent is based on Marlene Dietrich's character "Frenchy" in Destry Rides Again (1939). Dom DeLuise's character "Buddy Bizarre" is a reference to dance choreographer Busby Berkeley. The character of "Gabby Johnson" (bearded authentic frontiersman) is a tribute to George "Gabby" Hayes, sidekick to John Wayne, Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. When Mongo rides into town, one Mexican says, "Mongo! Santa Maria!" Mongo Santamaria was a famous Cuban musician. The character "Governor LePetomane" was named after a turn-of-the-century French performer, Joseph Pujol, whose stage name was "Le Pétomane." His shtick was farting at will (I kid you not). Last, but not least, the character "Hedley Lamarr" is mistakenly called "Hedy" in the film. Mel Brooks' character then says "this is 1874, you'll be able to sue her." By "coming first," Hedley could sue famed actress Hedy Lamarr for stealing HIS name. In real life, Hedy Lamarr was known to have sued lots of people. Ironically, Hedy did sue Mel Brooks long after the joke was written.
Those are really cool details! I love all the little homages Brooks puts in his films.

This was a fun reaction to watch. Very few reactors get the Laurel & Hardy handshake word play and I don't think I've seen anyone react to this before who understood the Heddy/Hedley Lamarr jokes. P.S. She actually did sue Mel Brooks over this. He settled with her out of court and I think he actually got a kick out of it. P.P.S. The Indian Chief in the desert was speaking Yiddish (a combination of Hebrew, German and other languages that Jews lived among as they headed north and east in the diaspora). In the old days of Hollywood, Native Americans were often played by Jewish actors and other olive-skinned types - - I think that was Mel Brooks' way of poking fun at that. I met Rodney Allen Rippey (the little kid) a couple of years ago. He was so sweet and remembers his work on this film fondly. I think he's probably in his mid-late 50s at this point. Anyway, nice reaction. I enjoyed it. Give History of the World Part I a try. I think you'll probably love it. All the best.

There’s a part in the movie where one of the town says they don’t want the Irish. It may sound strange, but it was referencing the racism and discrimination the Irish endured during the late 19th and early 20th century.
Yeah, I kind of got that vibe from the line. People's priorities in those days were messed up.
Yeah, there was a while that being “white” wasn’t just about skin color. You had to be the “right kind of white.” A lot of weird xenophobia.

Fun fact: Burton Gilliam (Lyle) stated that he had" a great deal of difficulty calling people what I was having to call them". Cleavon took him aside and reassured him that these are just words that someone wrote. It was understood that he did not mean them
Thank you for not censoring the dialogue, as most other reaction videos do. I’m in no way advocating the use of racial slurs, but it was an important ingredient of this movie to demonstrate the ignorance and prejudice common in 1874, in 1974, and sadly, still today. To sanitize it by cleaning up the language does a disservice to the message that Mel Brooks (and Richard Pryor, for that matter) were trying to convey. People who have such attitudes and use such language are, you know, morons.

When Hedley was molesting that statue, it was the figure of Lady Justice. For all intents and purposes, he was screwing justice.

This is probably the best reaction video of Blazing Saddles I've seen thus far. Too many try to overanalyze and understand when it's just a matter of laughing your ass off at this magnificent Mel Brooks masterpiece.

Speaking of the late Dom DeLuise the schoolmarm lady with the loud voice was Dom's wife Carol Authur. FYI Dom also appeared in an episode of Seaquest DSV with all three of sons. Peter, Michael and David. And Dom also appeared on a couple of episodes of Stargate SG1 and again all his sons would also appear in the series in various episodes over the course of 10 seasons instead of a single episode.
Cool! I knew about the Stargate stuff (SG1 is one of my all-time favourite series) but the other stuff is interesting.
I remember when this came on TV and of all it had to show they edited out the fart sounds cuz it was too offensive for TV so you had the motions but no sound. I have read that Mel Brooks wrote the songs so he had control of what was used. The opening song was was contracted out to a person who thought they were writing a song for a serious western hence the opening scene on the railroad that matches the closing scene of How The West Was Won. And then the mayhem started.
Another Mel Brooks movie you could watch is High Anxiety. It’s a parody of Alfred Hitchcock movies.

I saw this movie in the theatre (more than once!) when it first came out, but some years later in the 1980s I saw it broadcast on commercial televsision. Obviously all the racial slurs were cut, but in the fart scene all the fart sounds were cut. It looked absolutely ridiculous seeing these guys rise from their seats apparently for no reason then sit back down again. Hilarious.
FINALLY! Someone(s) who get this film and all it's references. And thank you for not censoring the non PCs. If you can't handle the language then DON'T review films like this! Good job guys.
Most people censor the slurs because if they don't, their CZcams ad money for the video is likely to be taken away.
Absolutely the best reaction to this film that I have ever seen. You two got it, and so so many don’t. Loved the comments, and the editing (or lack there of at times). Editing this movie too drastically takes away from the point that’s being made about how ludicrous racism is. ♥️🤣✌🏼😎
1. Mel Brooks played the Governor and the Indian Chief and one of the thug roundup.
2. Mel Brooks doesn't just break the 4th wall he shatters, steps on and grinds it into the ground.
3. The preacher plays in Young Frankenstein as an old man that gets racked by Dr. Frankenstein.
Madeline Kahn also had a smallish role in it.
4. Yes, Bart and Jim were smoking wacky tobacky.
5. The line, "You know morons" was ad lib by Wilder. Little's reaction was real.
6. The guy that was supposed to play Jim showed up the first day drunk so he was let go.
Wilder agreed to do this movie for Mel Brooks only if Mel would direct Young Frankenstein for him.
7. Richard Pryor was supposed to play Bart but he was going through his addictions at the time and
they thought it wouldn't be a good idea. However, he did some of the writing.
8. Jim still has his popcorn from the theater.

Mel Brook's role as a Jewish Indian chief was another jab at classic Hollywood Westerns. It was not uncommon for Jewish men to play Indians in old Hollywood films.
I believe that either 'Blazing Saddles' or 'Young Frankenstein' is the funniest American movie ever made. And it's 'Young Frankenstein' season, again...

The soldiers are there because the great and magnificent Madeline Kahn is playing a parody of the great and magnificent Marlene Dietrich, a German actress famous for her accent, her distinctive singing, and her flexible sensuality. Hedy Lamar was having financial difficulties in the 1970s. Mel Brooks actually intended for her to sue so that he could help her out without it being charity.
If you haven't watched it yet, I'd suggest checking out Young Frankenstein. Gene Wilder approached Mel Brooks with the idea while they were shooting Blazing Saddles. They wrote YF together, and Mel directed it.

Dom DeLouis’ wife Carol plays Harriet VAN JOHNSON. John Hillerman plays HOWARD JOHNSON. GABBY JOHNSON is a take off on Gabby Harris. There’s Samuel Johnson, developed a cure Malaria. There’s more to find if you read the list of Johnson’s.
This movie is a great parody of all the racial stereotypes in Western movies and in Hollywood in general. There were times they would use no-natives for native roles. They would use Eastern Europeans in those roles. Oh the guy playing Tagaert was played by the late great Slim Pickens. He was always in the Westerns back in the 50's and 60's. Mongo was played by Alex Karras who was a famous Football for the Detroit Lions he was also the dad in Webster.
Could you do more reactions to older comedies like It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World? This was good.

Its a mad mad mad mad world is a disappointment really. Pink Panther movies are great. The Producers and To Be or Not to Be are good Mel Brooks movies as well as Young Frankenstein [or is that Frankenstein?]

If you haven't seen it you should watch Haunted Honeymoon with Dom Deluise, Gene Wilder, & Gilda Radner. Its a fun movie.
That schoolteacher has a mean right hook. Grew up on Mel Brooks and watch every reaction I can find. Another you should check out is a man named Ray Stevens who does comedy music. I suggest The Streak, Ain't Sittin' up With the Dead, or Mississippi Squirrel Revival.
Have you ever watched *The Thin Man* from 1934? It's a murder mystery mixed with humor. Worth watching.
Notice that all the bigoted people are portrayed as stupid. That was Mel Brooks' way of showing how ridiculous snd stupid it was to treat people different just because of skin color or nationality (when they referenced the Jewish, Chinese and Irish).

I appreciate your enjoyment of the movie. However, out of the 20+ reactions to this movie that I have watched you set the record for more punch lines deleted. It is still a great film. I enjoyed it in 1974 and the multiple times I have watched it since then. Recommend "Duck Soup" by the Marx Brothers.

We've already seen it, and it's one of our favourite comedies. An absolute classic! "You've got clearance, Clarence." "Roger, Roger. What's your vector, Victor?"
The outrageous material is there on purpose to parody and ridicule the people who use it. So you don't have to accept it based on the time; you laugh at the villains who are using it. Brooks and Richard Pryor, who helped with the script, knew what they were doing.
You managed to cut out every funny scene from your reaction - The old granny "Up yours N....", when she apologises, Dom Deluise "Watch me....", The plea for help "the Fools going to...", Barts first words in Rock Ridge "Scuse me while I whip this out...'
Well, to be fair, there are funny scenes approximately every 30-45 seconds in this movie. They did perfectly fine. Were some more popular ones missed? Sure. Still doesn't take away from this.
