The Resurgence of Europe’s Far-Right

- As we enter 2024, one of the biggest issues likely to face transatlantic partners is the rise of far-right parties in Europe, which have recently gained significant electoral support in countries such as the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, and Sweden. After strong showings several years ago, these parties seemingly receded into the background as the leaders of more traditional parties steered Europe through major crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic. As we observe the far-right become more prominent in the political mainstream, what are the reasons behind this trend, and what are its likely implications for Europe going forward? To tackle these crucial questions, Catherine Fieschi and Erik Jones join Andrea Kendall-Taylor and Jim Townsend on this episode of Brussels Sprouts.
Catherine Fieschi is a leading European political analyst and a Fellow of the Robert Schuman Centre in Florence
Erik Jones is the Director of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute.

A lot of complaining about populism and no discussion of how we got here. Total waste of time. Not worth listening to at all.
Thanks for saving me 54 minutes.
@@philchu6839 you are welcome 👍

"Far right" aka Common sense and having borders... 🤣

Wow shocking that when you demean and replace a people with hostile immigrants they actually fight back
wowowowowo
Fieschi says that the center-right parties had moved to the right and that somehow helped the far-right. I find that to be quite counter-intuitive. Shouldn't moving your politics closer to another party get you some of their voters now voting for you instead?
Besides, I think the national sovereign viewpoint had been represented by the center-right and they moved to the left, giving in to internationalism and EU integration and therefore bleeding voters to the far-right.
To comment on the end points do they not realise these far right movements are the the popular parties amoung european youths. Just look at the voting demographics for le Pen or Maloni their biggest demographics are young voters???
The fundamental problem in Europe is the same as the problem in the US; decades of steady erosion of social services and safety nets and funneling money towards the super wealthy, leading to rising inequality and all the problems that that causes like increasing poverty, increasing crime rates, and an erosion of social cohesion and a harshening of social attitudes. These problems ultimately stem from policies of deregulation, privatization, tax cuts for the rich and continuous austerity, and the mostly (economically) center right media then blames convenient minority scapegoats like immigrants or trans people, amping up xenophobia by exaggerating threats, and egging on culture wars to distract from the real problems because they themselves also benefit from the prevalent neoliberal economic policies, which causes further division. It is not as far along as in the US or the UK in mainland Europe as we have more robust political systems and we started from a much better place and mostly followed along with the rise of neoliberalism instead of spearheading it, and so our fascist types may look a bit less crazy than your fascist types, but the fundamental issues are the same (as are their weird hairdos).
Europe is healing
No, we are most definitely not.

U guys should talk about your own country and care about your own issues
Why shouldn't others be allowed to analyze us? Don't pretend for one second that you don't have opinions on the US.

I'd agree they here. But, can people talk about the far left with them holding USSR flags in town centres and calling for political violence.
Calling for political violence? When? Who? Where?
@@toddharig8142the odd time, mainly every two weeks on Saturdays and Sundays in their protests. CYM and other politically minded people in Dublin city. Mainly from left wingers. Some from the right too.
I'm not joking. I see them from time to time, worked with a few too. Commies, that is.
Amsterdam if your wondering
Thats a normal day for the far left 🤣
As always, everything on the right is projection.
Misinformation
Oh I wonder how we got here?! Maybe we’re all fed up with politicians eroding our culture.
