No Winners in This Game
The relationship between the United States and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) is marked by both geopolitical tensions and deep economic linkages. And the once unthinkable idea of imposing severe sanctions on China has become a strategic imperative to consider
A report from the Center for a New American Security seeks to advance policy debates on how to sanction China, if geopolitical conditions warranted doing so at scale.
Sanctions alone will not deter the PRC from war. However, that does not mean that sanctions have no role in managing tensions with the PRC. The question for policymakers is not whether sanctions will work to deter China, but instead how sanctions can be used to greatest effect as part of a broader strategy that integrates all instruments of national power.

The fundamental problem in Europe is the same as the problem in the US; decades of steady erosion of social services and safety nets and funneling money towards the super wealthy, leading to rising inequality and all the problems that that causes like increasing poverty, increasing crime rates, and an erosion of social cohesion and a harshening of social attitudes. These problems ultimately stem from policies of deregulation, privatization, tax cuts for the rich and continuous austerity, and the mostly (economically) center right media then blames convenient minority scapegoats like immigrants or trans people, amping up xenophobia by exaggerating threats, and egging on culture wars to distract from the real problems because they themselves also benefit from the prevalent neoliberal economic policies, which causes further division. It is not as far along as in the US or the UK in mainland Europe as we have more robust political systems and we started from a much better place and mostly followed along with the rise of neoliberalism instead of spearheading it, and so our fascist types may look a bit less crazy than your fascist types, but the fundamental issues are the same (as are their weird hairdos).

The scenario premise used is misleading. What’s the deal with 2027 , it’s Not written in Stone. XI statement referring to 27 is a goal. Also the PRC are pragmatic and collected , they’re Not Rash. The PLA are playing the Long Game , they’re Not in a rush. They have a plan. It doesn’t matter who’s in charge everyone has the same goal. Reunification No Matter how long it takes. There are Only TWO real scenarios in which the PLA would conduct an “ Armed Reunification” on Taiwan in 2027 , Taiwan declares complete independence , or Foreign Troops are formally based on the Island permanently. Full scale Foreign military bases. ( both of which would require backing from the US ) Other than that the PLA invading Taiwan in 2027 without breaking one of the TWO listed is Not plausible.

I don't know much about Georgia but what exactly is so horrible about a law making externally funded NGOs register as foreign agents? It sounds okay to me. We require lobbyists to register as foreign agents. Isn't this more of a sovereignty issue than a democracy question ? I feel there is a tendency these days to turn everything in to an issue about rising autocracy, perhaps if you have a hammer everything starts to look like a nail.

I think everyone is underestimating Trump's penchant for changing his mind when confronted with reality. When he's briefed on Russia's war crimes and when he tries to bring them to the negotiating table and they snub him, he's going to take personal offense and go hard on supporting Ukraine (and on forcing Europe to support them more).

I often hear the phrase, "Russian efforts are only possible because the Soviet Union was a thing." but that also applies to the West where their support of Ukraine is only possible because of their own Cold War stockpiles. America has not built a new Abrams tank from scratch since 1996, it's only been upgrading or using existing chassis, and Europeans are in a similar position. While the Russians can only build 200 tanks a year, that's more than the West can manage at the moment. Additionally there is a 3 year backlog on orders for new Patriot missiles, among other munitions and artillery production is only just beginning to ramp up. The point of a stockpile is to expend it until your production catches up to demand, so while the Soviet Legacy might be being expended it's unclear how much longer the BMP-1s, T-62s, and T-55s would have been relevant anyways in a hypothetical NATO confrontation or conflict over Siberia's sovereignty with China.
