For some reason, no reactor seems to remember that no Avatar’s animal companion survives the death of their Avatar. Remember when we witnessed the death of Avatar Roku in the flashback in season 3? As he was about to die, his dragon which could have escaped, instead encircled him and passed with him. There’s no way Appa would have run away to safety if Aang were dying, right? I enjoyed your reaction very much. Korra is as good as Avatar, just different.

This is a new show in the same universe, that’s the thing that’s important to remember. This is such a beautiful show, it suffers a bit from studio meddling, but mainly when people compare it to much to ATLA. Let it breath and let it grow on you the same way ATLA did and you’ll fall in love.

The problem comes from what this show does to the lore of the world in season 2, it’s totally correct to say that you should judge this show on its own merits but it does at the end of the day serve as a sequel to ATLA and thus that does cause some of the plot points and lore changes to get some honestly deserved criticism. The world of ATLA feels ancient, but it was actually right on the cusp of the Industrial Revolution. Sokka helped invent submarines, which were invented in 1863. The Fire Nation had coal power. Add in the discovery of metal bending and the fire nation actually cooperating with the earth kingdom, and you get a lot of modernity.
It’s set in the roaring 20s. You can tell by the style of vehicles and the use of radio but not television (as well as something that gets invented in season 2.)

TLOK is a great show please stick with it. It had some low points IMO but still amazing with its world building and character progression. I heard that the directors didn't know if they were getting a season 2 and again didn't know if they were getting season 3. That being said during season 3-4 it feels a lot more connected and they tie up the series as a whole pretty well. If I had to rate this show with ATLA being a 11/10 for all its seasons then TLOK season 1 is a 8/10, season 2 a 6/10, season 3-4 a 10/10.

Nick approved a budget for the first season, once it had begun production and Nick was able to see concept art the second season was approved and also given the same full budget. the first season was mostly finished and not airing yet when the final 2 seasons and budgets were approved.

On the modernity issue, because I listened to this a lot when it came out. The fire nation had steam powered ships, which were developed in the 1780s and mass produced by 1820s. The machinist built a larger submarine with torpedoes putting it in line with hunley in 1860s. The rigid air ship also fielded by the fire nation were developed in the 1870s and fielded closer to the 1890s.
The satomobile which is essentially a Ford on an assembly line dates to 1913. Marconi first long distance radio communication was 1895. Arc lights were around in 1806 with Edison bulbs catching on in the 1870s. The war of the currents was 1880s to 1890s. Early biplane aircraft 1914.
The majority of the new tech in avatar and in korra happened within the 65 year gap between the two and in our world a lot of the new things in korra were contemporary to some of the things in avatar. Hell take Japan. In 1854 Japan had flint lock muskets based on a dutch design from centuries earlier, swords and armor in 1854 when Perry showed up. By 1910 they had a modern army and navy, electricity, trains, beaten Russia in Korea and signed a defense treaty with Britain where Britain trusted Japan to defend their stuff in the east. Shit has advanced fast in the last two centuries.
Also if anyone responds about...things from later please note I've worded things to be almost spoiler free and non specific.

The simplest way to summarize what you will encounter in this series is:
The Last Airbender is a series about a boy learning to be the Avatar. Legend of Korra is a series about an Avatar learning to be a teenager.
Aang didn't want to be the Avatar, he didn't want to fight or get involved in the war. Korra thinks that, by being the Avatar, she can take the world by storm.
It's a good series; while ATLA's characters are way over the top, here you're going to find several interesting ones, particularly the antagonists, which is another difference between the two series: here the antagonists have a just reason (or at least, according to their wrong perspectives) to do what they do; it's not just "I'm bad muehehehehe".
The stories are somewhat more adult and are encouraged to touch on more complex themes; as well as greatly increase the lore of the Avatar universe.

Unlike ATLA, where they knew from the beginning they had 3 full seasons to tell the story, here they were given only 1 season and didnt know, if there would green light for another one. Its the same for season 2. After season 2, it was extended for 2 seasons instead of 1, therefore seasons 3&4 are connecter. Of course this is just a small part of why this show could have been better, but i still enjoyed it nonetheless.

The reason that Aang and the past avatars didnt have to deal with things like in Korra was because the world was in a fully divided state until the 100 year war. The fire nation created colonies in the earth kingdom, at which the fire and earth cultures started to mix. That could not be undone after the war, so instead they had to move forward with uniting the whole world to co-exist together. This is what caused the mass expansion of advancements and also the bender vs non-bender issue. When it was within the culture, the oppression was more underground, but altogether it lets every non-bender share a common issue.

It's also worth noting, because some people complained about how 'good' she is at series start, that Korra's been training as Avatar for about 12-14 years. Poor Aang got ONE, and was arguably just as good if not better than her. She's just naturally more aggressive than he is, so is quicker to go all out (which often doesn't do her any favors).

      So is an unnecessary comparison.
She was training how the white lotus wanted.
And about the mastery skills I won't say anything because you just pointed the bad in her.

The Legend of Korra isn't bad, I feel like people give it too much hate simply because it's not as good as the original, but that's okay.
It picks up in the later seasons, and I do love the overall fights, there's a lot of action and pretty fast paced. Definitely worth watching.

It's important to know that they were only told they were making one season at first.
And then all of a sudden they had to make a second season with very short amount of time to write it.
Then they were finally told they would be getting a 3rd and 4th seasons so they could actually plan out Something that connected those seasons better.

  • @CalciumChief

The big problem with Korra is Nick ordered one season, but the ratings were good, so they ordered one more season... and then two more. Because of that the crew couldn't make one big ongoing narrative and had to throw in a big bad villain every season. There are other issues, but this one hurt the thing from the very start.
    2:05 It's J. Jonah Jameson himself J.K. Simmons.
6:05 You saying all flying bison look like Appa? That's bisonist. No, they just found an island of those. Yes, that's the explanation, even though they never say it on the show.
6:26 Buy the comic book for that.
21:01 Kinda funny saying this is modern when it's styled to be like the 1930's.

this rumor is not true. they were told upfront Nick wanted another 3 season avatar show, Bryke (head writers) wanted to make multiple mini-series, independent stories. Nick approved a budget for the first season, once it had begun production and Nick was able to see concept art the second season was approved and also given the same full budget. the first season was mostly finished and not airing yet when seasons 3+4 budgets were approved.
this is all verified in different interviews with Bryke, in one quote they say "we were working on over 30 episodes of Korra at once" meaning season 2-4.
season 1 was going badly on Nick, the ratings were dropping off fast each episode, so the 4ths season's budget was cut by about 10% while S1 was airing. Bryke has stated this is why S4 has that weird recapping moments/clips episode

One of the valid criticisms is that Korra is an arrogant bossbtch for the majority of the show where as Aang was basically a monk through and through.

So far most of the Reaction people I've watched have enjoyed it, and it was just the people who watched it live each week when it came out that didn't care for it too much. I think that's because the episodes were played out of order or something? I don't know, I really enjoy this Season. The start of Season 2 is a bit rough for me, but again, most people who I've watched React to it have enjoyed it as well.

This show does nothing but add onto the greatness of ATLA imo, as a sequel series should.

People who say the show is bad by comparison to atla are not people who have real opinions. It's different, sure, and some people will dislike that. I was a bit older when I watched the two shows so Korra always stuck with me more, I like that she is a character with a lot of conflict and a less mild personality. The show does suffer from having gone through some development hiccups and you will probably notice that too, there is no doubt it would have been a better show had the writers been given the time and budged required, but I still think it is very entertaining, even if the uneven quality pattern.

Aang and Katara's children are named after Bumi and Kya (Katara's mom). Tenzin is named after Tenzin Gyatso, the Dalai Lama that Gyatso was also named after.
Also, Oogi is named after Aang and Katara's love for each other since Sokka in the comics said watching them flirt gave him "the oogies".
