    The top was not his real totem. Remember it was his wife's totem. It was misdirection to better protect his real totem. His real totem was his wedding ring. When he was always wearing it in his dreams, but didn't have it on while awake. Spinning the top with his left hand let him look at his hand without drawing attention to it.

      I used to believe his wedding ring was his totem, but there is a video that makes it pretty clear that it isn’t.
      It basically goes like this. Your totem is what lets you know if you are awake or in a dream. Therefore the totem must be something from the real world. If he only has the ring on when he’s dreaming, then that means there is no ring when he is awake. So then there would be no totem in the real world.

    At 30:08 it's interesting that you think it too so much going inside to figure out what the last words of Fisher's father meant. But this moment was the actual Inception, this was planted by Cobb's team and was the wohle reason of the plot! Although I guess no one can say for sure if his father was really disappointed in him, this is now the reason Fisher decides to believe - to keep his father in a positive memory.

    • @Kai-fb1ol
      @Kai-fb1ol Před 2 lety +6

      Yeah, the idea that his father loved him and wanted him to make something for himself was entirely fabricated by Cobb's team. There's absolutely no evidence one way or the other about whether it reflects reality, but there's really no reason it should. The whole point of the heist was to Incept the idea of breaking up his father's empire into Fischer's mind. Cobb chose to do it in a way that would also mend Fischer's relationship with his father, because that made the Inception more likely to succeed. In the end, Saito gets what he paid for, and Fischer will probably be a happier person despite breaking up his father's empire. Everybody comes out ahead.

    • @Kai-fb1ol
      @Kai-fb1ol Před 2 lety +2

      @@kirathekillernote2173 I think Saito would recover. He may have spent decades in Limbo, but so did Cobb and Mal in the past, and after they returned to the real world Cobb still acted like his real age. In dreams, you can forget things like who you are, but then once you wake up you always remember again.
      As for Fischer, he'd still be insanely rich even if he breaks up the empire. I'm sure he'd keep a part of it, or start up his own new company with the proceeds, or invest in some new venture. He'd go from being worth hundreds of billions to being worth a few billion, maybe. But instead of being weighed down with the impossible goal of proving himself to his dead father, he'd be working for his own fulfilment.

At the end there was a collective groan and sounds of frustration from the audience. Talking about dreams the strangest one that I cam can remember was that I was asleep and got woken up, got ready and went to work - but something wasn't right I was still dreaming. Then the alarm went off and I woke up, got ready as before and went to the office, but then I realised that I was still in a dream. CinemaWins has an amazing theory about what the ending of this film means. It's possible that since the spinning top was Mal's totem and not Cobb's that it can't be trusted to expose reality. Some people think that Cobb's totem is his wedding ring (and they might well be right), but it's not critical either way. I cant remember the exact explanation, but CinemaWins theory is that this film is Cobb performing Inception on himself to convince himself that it's time to see his children again. It's a theory I really like.
    Of course, it's also Nolan performing Inception on us, getting us to question what's real and what isn't.

    Super reaction Mary, I’m glad you finally saw Inception. I loved when you said you didn’t want the movie to end. Exactly the way I felt too. As a child, I experienced multi-level dreams, trapped within dreams, and later, lucid dreams. Inception brought all that back as I remembered just how detailed and complex the dreams can be. I couldn’t believe it when the movie introduced Totems, because I had, in fact, developed such tests to help me determine whether I was dreaming or not, and whether I had to wake up again through another level of dreaming. Though Inception is highly dramatized, dreams within dreams are quite real in my experience.

    The point of the the final shot cutting before the top falls is not "is it real or not?" The top is clearly about to fall, but Nolan's point was that Cobb stopped obsessing over what is real and what is not, and made a commitment to his children his top value. He walked away from the top without waiting for it to fall, and the movie did too.

    I think the whole movie is a deception, and here's why: convincing Fischer to give up his father's empire wasn't the real mission, it was convincing Cobb to let go of his wife's memory. It's why Cobb had to go one level deeper to convince Saito to "come home" even though everyone was convinced Saito was dead, it's why Ariadne took so quickly and easily to manipulating the dream world, and it's why Cobb didn't wait for the top to stop spinning, the Inception had been achieved, he no longer needed to wait for the spinning to stop because he now accepted that he was home free.

    I saw this film in theatres and that first watch with a large crowd was such a great experience. There was a collective gasp right after we see the top falter but was cut with the black out and credits. Immediately people were murmuring how great they thought the film was and were conflicted with the end. Glass half empty/full people were conflicted but over all loved the film as the credits ran. Movies like this are rare but are fantastic to experience with others. You have a great channel and I enjoyed your reaction.

    Remember that scene where Cobb and Ariadne are at the cafe in Paris, and Cobb says "You never really remember the start of a dream do you?" and "How did we get here?"
    Notice how we never see how they got there either?
    This movie _is_ an inception on the audience.

    The Special Features of this video disc reveal that there are actual psychological cases that prove that dream-sharing is possible! But psychologists also admit that the same "brain wave functions" during conscious awareness are the same as those experienced during the "dream state!" Their conclusion discloses that our "conscious reality" may in fact be a SHARED DREAM!

    The only way you can experience that gem "nearly" for the first time again is the way we watchers do it: watching a reactor enjoy the movie for the first time.
    So what you have to do now is record a session with you watching ANOTHER reactor getting their first impressions of Inception. That would give you a second-layer nice experience and a third layer to us at the same time! Inception while watching Inception basically... 🤤💣💥

Its premise is like a combination of this film and _The Matrix._ (It also had the sheer, brutally bad luck to be released 3 weeks after _The Matrix_ premiered. It wasn't an action blockbuster, so it was overshadowed and mostly forgotten.)

    I always liked this movie because despite doing something criminal, they are never mean to their victim. They actually give him therapy. Sure, he will not become a superpower now, probably. He will still have more money than he can spend. I had an idea for a sequel where he would hunt down and gather the original team to have them do a job for him, someone he cares about who needs help similarly like he did and in the end he would have them all for dinner and thank them for what they did to him in first movie. Ending with Fisher opening up a clinic where dream therapy would be used by psychiatrists and therapists to help more effectively and naming it after Mal.

    Ariadne acts somewhat intrusive, but she's hardly to blame.
    The first time she shared the dreamscape with another person, she got banished out with a very real and painful feeling of a abdominal stab. If that team is going to wander around in the dreamscape SHE designed then it's imperative precautions that she needs to know if there's a twisted, warped guilt hounding them.

    I remember a dream that I had about twenty years ago like it was last night. I can remember friends and family that I had while I was there, I remember learning new things and getting older. When I sit and think about that place, I can still feel them and miss them. It’s so weird and surreal. When I woke up it took a few hours before I accepted that none of it had happened, that I wasn’t dreaming anymore.
    Some dreams are worth staying asleep for. Cheers.

    It's not important whether the top at the end will keep spinning or not. Cobb has accepted this as the reality, whether it is or not, and he is happy with his children. nothing else matters.
    Most people (including me) are quite sure it's real though. Cobb is always wearing his wedding ring in the dream scenes and he is never wearing it in the scenes that take place in reality. in the last scene he isn't wearing it. I personally don't think that is a coincidence.

      You're one of the few that understood the ending. In the opening scene Cobb spins his totem with a gun in his hand ready to blow his brains out. He is obsessed with knowing if he is dreaming. At the end he spins the totem and walks away, he doesn't care anymore. He wants to feel happy and see his kids.

    I doubt Fischer's father actually would have said "I was disappointed that you tried" irl. It was on the deepest level of his subconcious cause that's his deepest wish, everything he ever wanted, his father's love and respect. Also, keep in mind it's all just to get him to split up the empire of his father and the reason it's something wholesome is, as they said, that something positive as motivation works way better than something negative.
    This is a very good video on Fischer's journey/experience in this movie: czcams.com/video/7bcW1nRa9YE/video.html
