  • If you are in the market for a pop up camper truck camper but you want the protection and comfort of a hard side camper vs a soft pop up camper...then you need to take a closer look at the pop up hard side truck campers from Alaskan Campers.
    They have been making pop up truck campers with fold down hard walls for over 60 years. They were originally used by construction workers who had to build the Alaska Canada highway by day and sleep in the snow by night hundreds of miles away from any town.
    Thats a seriously awesome history for a truck camper company. So you can have peace of mind that the folks at Alaskan Camper know what they are doing. What works and what doesn't work.
    Yes their campers are pricey but if you look close you will see they are worth every penny if you find yourself camping in a snow storm.
    Another big selling point is that the camper pop down giving the driver better gas mileage and better control since the center of gravity is lower. This probably pays off greatly when off road.
    I have already told myself that I will own one of these someday! I just need to save up some cash lol.

    It would be nice if the had a floor plan that included a wet bath and/or a shower in the dinette - like four wheel campers.
    It would also be cool if they did a shell model so it could be had at a lower price point. The hard side pop up style is awesome!

    I love these. But alot of money. I think a wet shower stall could be installed where current toilet is up to the ceiling and make the top portion sleeved inside lower portion and just compress and extend with roof. Drain the gray water into outside water bag and your good. And also retain the canister toilet. It would work. Maybe I should buy one and modify it. lol

    • @BearUkulele
      @BearUkulele Před 5 lety +2

      It depends on your travel style, but I imagine most folks will use rest stop & public campground toilets or a dump station. 💩 management & proper emptying procedure are critical. You do NOT want to attempt dumping a full cassette all at once...unless it's a pit toilet.

    • @robertottwell605
      @robertottwell605 Před 5 lety +1

      The cassette toilet take up way too much room and the box its in is a waste of space you could put i the biggest porti potty and have a nice seat on top and you can still carry the tank in to empty out or dump

    That's a neat build of an Alaskan camper, I have an late 80's one and we have "hammered" in it off road, sure It has some issues it's over 30 years old. will have to investigate this integrated water heater/heater featured, would be nice to see an install of a non rooftop AC, maybe a mini split in an AK camper. My AK camper is also installed on a flatbed though it is the truck bed style. put tool boxes where bed would sit.

Kimbo builds a comparible one for a Toyota Tacoma. It's mostly made of aluminum. The one doing the video could have done better. If someone could build a camper thing combining the best of wee roll(aluminum shark cage frame = No rot or rust),kimbo truck camper thicker aluminum walls n partitions,n Alaskan camper craftsmanship (ex.;cassette toilet ect.) Also the Australian Icarr tear drop (aluminum inside n cabinets,ect.)A retired person wouldn't need a house,n be able to travel at will. • @dlg5485
    @dlg5485 Před 4 lety +5

    Love Alaskan popup campers, but the fact that they still use wood framing is a major turn off for me. As expensive as these things are, they should be using aluminum framing throughout. That would also make them significantly lighter and less weight has so many benefits. Plus it needs an indoor shower. Aside from those issues, Alaskan is one of my top 2 favorite truck camper manufacturers with FourWheel campers.

    • @1966cambo
      @1966cambo Před 4 lety +1

      D LG there is nothing wrong with wood framing IF you maintain your camper, there are many that have been around for years that are not rotten. Everything has its issues, what most dont understand is that most aluminum framed campers still use wood inside the aluminum tube for screws to grab, so what happens when that rots?

    • @dlg5485
      @dlg5485 Před 4 lety +1

      @@1966cambo I must disagree. Anything that is exposed to the harsh elements will eventually suffer water infiltration and we all know what water does to wood. Of course, these campers are built far better than the typical wood framed camper, but there is simply no question that aluminum framing would make them even more durable, over the long term.

      Usually the sides of a regular truck camper are elevated because of the wheel wells in the truck bed. On a flatbed camper the whole thing is flat. You could probably make a regular truck camper work on a flat bed but you wouldn't be able to get a flatbed camper on a regular truck.

I purchased a used 1999 Elkhorn 9T that has everything in it for 2500$. sits on my used F250 2006 5.4 supercab 8' bed. i invested a total of approx 8K in a used truck that now has a new engine in it with a 50k mile warrenty.. so total investment is less than 12kcash. no debt. So this to me seems wasteful, but im glad there is a market for this, that means someone is making money to burn on this industry which is actually good for everyone..

      You pay them....they will install it.

      They make a shower arrangement where you stand on a tub mounted on the floor and have a wrap around curtain on an overhead track. You then use a pull out spigot on the sink with a spray head to wet and rinse. It would do in a pinch but an outside shower can easily be added.

    They truly messed up on the design. The camper door should have been on the driver side

      99% of American campers have sidewalk side access because Americans park on the right side of the road. Im sure they can build your camper to your specs though.

      mixflip yea it's the time old debade that's the same with the gas cap . For me it's always better to have it on the drivers side ( person in charge ) for smoother operation . Use the tool and don't let the tool use you !

    • @mixflip
      @mixflip  Před 6 lety +1

      I agree all gas caps should be on the drivers side. Or even better how about a gas filler on both sides or in the middle near the license plate?
