This Phat Puppy flugelhorn collaboration between Andy Taylor and CarolBrass may be the cutest flugelhorn that we've ever seen! It is also a lovely-playing instrument and its ergonomic design makes it more comfortable to play for long periods of time than some other flugelhorns. We love this little horn and think that you will too!

Here's what Taylor has to say about their instrument:
Trumpet players have been asking for years and years… When is someone going to build a pocket, or at least a much smaller flugelhorn. Something that sounds like a flugelhorn, that’s easy to play, uses my usual flugelhorn mouthpiece, that looks good and takes up half the space in my bag. Well, its here. Taylor have been making the Phat Boy flugelhorn for a good while now and in that time it has become established as probably the best flugelhorn you can buy right now. Using all that design and building experience Taylor have done it again, this time, with the Phat Puppy.
It’s no secret that the main issue with making a super compact flugelhorn has been the fat taper of the bell. It’s just too fat and unwieldy to wrap into tight spaces. The solution was to design a radical new bell taper and keep the fat big end where a lot of the tone generation comes from, then put the middle section on a diet. The result speaks for itself. It’s physically easier to play than a regular flugelhorn, it responds quicker than a regular flugelhorn, yet is still capable of that fluffy sweet sound that comes from a well set up flugelhorn with a good set of chops behind it. Just like any other flugelhorn, blow it wrong and it will sound wrong. Blow it sweet and it will respond sweet.

I picked one up - i’m honestly amazed at the sound and quality. It doesn’t have the super dark and floofy kind of sound, but it does have a magical ring/sparkle to it that’s totally unique.

Do you know where can I get a soft bag for a Phat Puppy? The case that it came with is too big for travel.

Serious Question: This flugelhorn is wrapped like a Trumpet! Trumpets always (as far as I know) have the bell on the left side of the valve cluster, but all the flugelhorns I have seen have the bell to the right of the valves. Do you know why this is? It has always puzzled me.

Your right thumb needs to sit under something for leverage when you hold the horn, on a trumpet the lead pipe is long enough that you can put your thumb there and then the tuning slide curves around to the valves. Because of the conical bore of the flugelhorn, the lead pipe has to go straight into the valves, meaning your thumb can’t go there, so they put the bell on the right side so you have some leverage. On this particular horn they happened to find a way to wrap it like a trumpet.

Actually it is wrapped like a cornet. I wonder if this helps with the intonation, since the way from the leadpipe into the valves is longer.
