  • SO a week of gluten free done. I know people always get super opinionated about stuff like this, and it always ends up as very interesting comment section, so lets stay nice to one another :))

    Also you’re right!! Unless you’re allergic or intolerant, you shouldn’t avoid gluten as doing this can actually make you develop an intolerance !!

    • @kellyb.9361
      @kellyb.9361 Před 4 lety +29

      Mmmm actually it cant, your body would just get used to not having to digest it and in turn, you may feel sorta icky for a bit. Its not an intolerance, just getting used to the extra work your body needs to digest glutenous foods again.

    • @annep8059
      @annep8059 Před 4 lety +17

      Thats what happened to me with lactose. Didn’t consume a drop for three years straight, so it wasn’t a surprise to me when I started eating I developed an intolerance🤷🏼‍♀️

    • @hermioneloasby9540
      @hermioneloasby9540 Před 4 lety +11

      Fleur Palmen yes this is so common!! If you have no exposure to something for a long enough time your body will reject it. For people who have a reaction to gluten, after avoiding it for a long time, if they accidentally eat it then they will find their reaction is much worse that it used to be as your body essentially becomes less tolerant to it over time of not consuming it!!

    • @hermioneloasby9540
      @hermioneloasby9540 Před 4 lety +5

      Kelly B. Food that contain gluten don’t take ‘extra work to digest’ - if you have no exposure to gluten for a long enough time your body will reject it when you consume it again, because you’ve developed an intolerance, this could be small or severe. X

    People shouldn’t avoid gluten especially if they aren’t intolerant/coeliac most ‘gluten free’ / free from alternatives are full of sugar and artificial ingredients - My sister is a coeliac and hates that people do it for ‘health reasons’ when it is worse for you to cut it out

    • @Luckygirlme111
      @Luckygirlme111 Před 4 lety +26

      True, if you buy those gluten substitutes. False if you go for natural, unprocessed products!! Buckwheat, quinoa, millet, oats (check if gluten free), rice, corn etc. are all naturally gluten free and extremely healthy. They are even healthier than refined flour. ALSO, some people who doesn't have celiac disease may benefit from cutting out gluten because wheat, rye etc. can contain other components that irritate some people's guts. I also have a friend who is not gluten intolerant according to blood tests, but whenever she eats gluten her face starts to itch.

    • @ciappy27
      @ciappy27 Před 4 lety +24

      It's not really for no reason. I'm gluten intollerante, my sister isn't and she tried this out and realized while gluten doesn't upset her digestion it makes her less bloated and makes her feel less heavy after eating. Think its important to test things out see what works for you what doesnt

    • @happycrafts_2310
      @happycrafts_2310 Před 4 lety +9

      Although I'm not gluten intolerant, I do buy gluten free products and make myself gluten free buckwheat bread due to a type of IBS I suffer from, which makes me intolerant to large quantities of oligosaccharides. Wheat unfortunately contains a lot of oligosaccharides, so I can't eat it without being in pain. However, I have recently discovered an ingredient called vital wheat gluten (which I use to make seitan and mock meats). Vital wheat gluten has had most oligosaccharides essentially taken out of it, so I can eat it without any problems.
      I thought I'd write this comment, since I've heard that a lot of people with IBS get shamed for buying gluten free products, even though they have a good reason for doing so. I also wish I'd discovered vital wheat gluten years ago; it's such a useful ingredient if you're trying to follow a vegan diet while dealing with IBS like me.

      @Melissa.Garrett Před 4 lety +6

      Maria Ciappara I find the same thing. I don’t get diarrhoea or anything from gluten, but it would make me bloat, slow down my digestion, and contribute to my headaches (it wasn’t the only cause of those). Since cutting out gluten my digestion just works better - I don’t know if that makes me gluten intolerant or not.

  • @skitsot9046
    @skitsot9046 Před 4 lety +75

    Sad how so many people feel the need to justify why they eat the way they eat in this comments section. Coeliac people are hating on gluten intolerant people, gluten intolerant people are hating on coeliacs because they don’t believe intolerance is that bad or a real thing, people with ibs are sad because everyone forgot about them and anyone else who has decided to cut out gluten cos it makes them less bloated or they just fine that they feel better etc etc. Whoooooo gives a shit. Everyone just eat what you want and what makes you happy and makes you feel good. Ugh. What one person puts in their mouth should not be an issue to another person.. especially some random on the internet

    • @nerdmaid1240
      @nerdmaid1240 Před 4 lety +8

      The reason coeliacs get so mad though is that because it's now seen as a 'fad' because lots of people tried it when it was trendy, and people in cafes and restaurants think it's a lifestyle choice rather than something that is dangerous and can make them really ill. That means that coeliacs are never taken seriously. I'm wheat intolerant and have been given food by mistake that has gluten in it when I specified I wanted gf, and the reason it wasn't taken seriously is because the place was offering what they thought was trendy, and the staff didn't see it as a health issue. For me that means a day on the couch and severe constipation. For some people it could mean a hospital trip. And it's hard not being able to eat like everyone else. So when someone says they went gf 'for health reasons' and what they mean is that they are following a trend, it can add to the feeling that the whole thing is some hippy fad, and that's why people get aggy about it. Personally, I'm thankful to those people. Because it became a bit trendy for a while, supermarkets started selling loads more options! When I first got told by my doctor to stop eating wheat, you could only get really horrible bread from health food shops!

    • @xl_psylocke_lx
      @xl_psylocke_lx Před 4 lety +3

      My son has celiac and will end up in the hospital if he has even a crumb of cross contamination. I think people with celiac get defensive because resturants think you are doing it for a fad because of all the people claiming to be intolerant when they never really had any testing. We no longer eat at resturants because of it.. one little crumb of gluten can mess up his small intestines enough that it would take 6 months to a year to recover from. But people with celiac, Hashimoto's, chrons, ibs, diverticulitis, colitis, an intolerance, etc (those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head) should all stay away from gluten

Not everyone who’s gluten free eats the gluten free processed food, if you do you just want to check what the ingredients are if it’s GF bread made from let’s say almond flour well that is more nutritious than wheat bread. It’s doesn’t really matter if your Gluten free or not both groups can eat healthy or not depending on what foods they choose to eat.

    Hiya! In case any of you out there are interested, here is my journey with coeliac disease.
    I got diagnosed with coeliac last year, so have now been gluten free for about a whole year, and there are a lot of things I have learned.
    EATING OUT: Eating out has been one of my biggest struggles this year. I have basically stopped eating out anywhere because there are no places I really feel comfortable. The one place that has been good to eat out at was pizza express as they cook their gluten free pizzas in a separate place. They are usually pretty good. Going out for drinks or coffee is also a struggle because some drinks, especially alcohol or hot chocolate can often contain gluten so my best advice is check ahead with those so you avoid holding up the queue whilst the server takes an embarrassing amount of time to go through the allergen booklet. (Seriously, It's mortifying...).
    Fast food- I never really ate fast food beforehand because I'm veggie, but something to look out for is chips from chip shops. Often they're not gluten free because they're fried in the same oil as battered fish and so on which isn't safe. I don't eat anything from any fast food restaurants like McDonalds now, but Itsu do have some good gluten free options so would recommend.
    AT HOME: One of the things that I had a real problem with is my family all eat gluten, so there is still a high chance of cross contamination in my kitchen even though I try to be careful. I have a separate side and cupboard where my food goes, as well as a separate toaster, which means I do have some safety. Something that caught me out at first was oat milk!!!!!!! My mum is vegan so uses oat milk instead of dairy. For the first few months we used Oatly but their milk is not gluten free so watch out!!!!
    Cooking- Most of the food I cook is vegan because of my mum, but it is also all gluten free. I used to be a huge baker but now I hardly bake because lets be honest its all a bit shit normally but Becky Excell has some good recipes. When it comes to dinner, curries, rice dishes, salads, potatoes and soups are all relatively easy and very tasty, and you can also get GF quiches from some supermarkets which are good. Be careful when it comes to things like sauces, as they can often have wheat or barley in them!
    Overall, coeliac has quite honestly just been a bit of an annoyance and very stressful to try and manage it especially as I go to college and have to make sure I bring enough food with me everywhere because I can't eat out anywhere. It is also a struggle when I'm travelling even in the UK because a lot of service stations don't really have any food. Although I feel a lot better than I did this time last year, and definitely eat a lot healthier, I still struggle with IBS from eating gluten for 17 years, and struggle with a lot of anxiety around eating, especially when I'm not the one who is cooking the food.
    I hope this is semi-helpful to someone out there. It does get better and easier as time goes on, don't worry, and for anyone who isn't coeliac or gluten intolerant, appreciate what you've got and eat some bloody bread. Love ya. x

    Thank you for telling it straight about gluten while being sensitive to people with real allergies! I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your "disclaimer" as gluten free diets are so often hailed as preferable for people who are NOT allergic for weight loss purposes which, as a recovered anorexic, is something I definitely fell prey to and have DEFINITELY since become a big fan of the glutens.

    The hardest thing about being gluten free is when you’re eating out. Some places are great but others look at you blankly and it can actually be really stressful not trusting what you’re eating and wondering if you’re going to get ill in a few hours. Especially being British and being v uncomfortable with making a fuss lol.... also things like buffets, canapés etc. There’s usually like one salad you can eat and you’re like cool... 🤦‍♀️I always bring snacks everywhere just in case.

      Yes, bag full of snacks! The worst is the dreaded blue folder. As soon as that comes out I'm nervous. At a posh artesian bakery I used to live by, I asked the young lad serving me if any of the bread was wheat free. He scanned down the allergy folder and said yes, showing me several amazing looking loaves. Luckily the baker who owned the place walked in because the lad had read it wrong and none was wheat free. Or I've had the blue folder scan and 'yeah, I think this cake is...I'm pretty sure?'

    @rafaelastoakes2062 Před 3 lety +2

    The confusion over gluten intolerance is due to the rapid increase of intolerances/allergies that have developed in the western world since the 1950s. There are more people with allergies and severe intolerances now than ever before. Farmers and Doctors agree that the severe damage to public digestive health can be linked to one prime factor - pesticides. Since large scale food growers introduced pesticides into their farming routines, the public have been slowly ingesting small amounts of the toxin in their bread, cereals, and sugars. These delicate crops (or those we don’t peel and wash) are the ones that are sprayed most (along with delicate fruits). This slow but constant exposure to pesticides has affected different people in different ways. Ie. coeliac, IBS, poor digestion, etc. So, when people give up foods that are heavily sprayed with pesticides (eg. Wheat, cereal, sugar cane) they start feeling a big difference in their bodies. The absence of gluten may play no part in it, but the fact that many gluten free products are made from organic rice, potato, or tuber flours, which can’t be sprayed directly, and are cleaned before they’re dried and milled, will make a difference to their symptoms. I agree with you that gluten itself isn’t “evil” - as people have been eating bread for thousands of years. But, in my opinion, pesticides should be eliminated from large scale farming and replaced with a safer alternative.
