    you did an outstanding job on the cattle guard. back in the late '40s and early 50's on the farm in Tenn. we made then basically the same way, but we used logs and 2X4 instead of concrete and steel pipes. (Mississippi gulf coast)

    Great work! When I worked for a farming company 85 percent of the time I did work independently, but it was a Labor of Love and I didn't call it a job it just came naturally. Unfortunately, the company closed down and I'll never find one like it again. Every day was a different work order. Thanks for tip on how to build a cattle guard.

      @@LewisRenovation I'm actually trying to solve a problem of ice on a long sloped drive for my girlfriend's parents in TN. I thought that a good ol TX cattle guard would provide the grate and lessen ice buildup that would keep them from sliding down the hill.

    very interesting, never imagined a cattle guard was this much work, however, the cows seemed to be most interested in what he was doing at one point.

      Mostly that much work because of my heavy clay soil. My dad 18 miles west of here can just put a cattle guard directly on the ground because he has rock on the surface. But my place sure looks better in the heat of summer.

    this here in Brazil is called a dumb forest, this prevents the herd of cattle from escaping and avoids the need for gates.

    My grandpa had one of those in his property now it's back in the 70s pretty much looks the same there's a little difference I was trained nice seeing how it was made cuz I was a little kid back then I can't add a general idea how it was made I was pretty close to Hope I was thinking nice to see the work you did I thought it turned out pretty decent what it's used for I do know

    Cattle guards also work for horses, as long as the horse can see it. On dark, foggy nights they will walk by feel and easily cross one and wind up standing in the middle of a paved county road. A road where no one obeys the 45 mph speed limit, even on dark, foggy early mornings. A compact pickup doing 60 mph hitting a large horse sounds just like you would think it does.

      I bet hitting a horse can cause some real damage. Generally in Texas hitting livestock is the driver's fault.

    Never needed this type of bridge.
    Cattle wont cross? Like them not going down stairs i guess? Ive seen plenty when i was a kid but never thought the purpose was that cows just dont cross them? I did notice them standing behind it before installed. Thought the dog was scaring em! Lol! Great vid!!

      They don't cross my 8' wide cattle guard but a couple do jump over my dad's 6' wide one

      @ascott They must be really scared of unsure footing. Shadows or even white strips will sometimes stop cows.

    Nice video. I saw a poor man's cattle guard somewhere in Utah. It was white stripes painted on the asphalt. Don't know how effective it was.

      I think its just the nature of Eastern US weather. When its wet in the east, its dry in Texas, and when its wet in Texas, its dry in the east.

      Yup, it’s directly caused by El Niño, when it’s here we’re wet, and your dry and when it’s there visa-versa.

    you should put a narrow strip of expanded metal where you walk up to lock the gate incase you fall thought it. i know a guy that fell through one and broke his leg and the dude was stuck there for five hours until they found him. thats if you put a gate there :P

    I build my forms first...Then I know how deep / wide the hole will be...... Spray paint the ground so I can see as I dig.... PLUS.... My driveway doesn't have a BIG HOLE in it as I am back at the shop building....... And the cattle LOL at you......

    What kind of weight will that handle? We usually build two perpendicular concrete supports approximately dump truck width apart for duallys with heavy loads, like concrete trucks, dump trucks, feed trucks, grain trucks, etc...

      It's designed to handle 80 tons. I've tested it once with a concrete truck snd it did fine. Take care.
