The sherman is a good average tank with multi-purpose, but the German tanks are overall stronger. However the early german tanks are single purpose and weaker (ostwind, Stug iv), the panzer iv is similar to the sherman in terms of strength and the later tanks (panther, tiger) are much stronger. All tanks have stronger armour at the front, weaker armour on the sides and the weakest at the back.

@@ybp395 I hate to bring this up a year later but Sherman's were cheap to make. They could not stand up 1 on 1 to any comparable tank because they were just not made for that purpose. " About 4,300 Shermans were lost between D-Day and VE Day alone - roughly 13 a day for 11 months straight. [5] In addition to its relatively thin skin, the M4 had an unfortunate tendency to catch fire after being hit. Axis tank crews nicknamed it “the Tommy Cooker,” while the British sardonically dubbed it the “Ronson” after a popular brand of cigarette lighter. Soldiers joked that the motto “lights up the first time, every time” described the Sherman too." The Americans in WW2 relied on mass produced average weaponry that they cranked out at ludicrous speeds like 45 shermans a day for 3 straight years.

@@Wogix26 Late or not, thanks so much for sharing this! I'm having a good time going down this rabbit hole. 1.4 miles to the gallon for the M4 Sherman, according to the article you linked; wow these things were costly, even for being comparably cheap. The more you knooooww!
