Paddington - Baby's First Wes Anderson Film

- Pixar and Disney have spoilt us. Most kids films aren't great; content, story or cinematically speaking. Poorly made fluff, focusing on lowest common denominator humour, simple plotting, needless Celebrity voiceovers and an over use of meaningless slo-mo. What makes it worse is that a good portion are based on nostalgic IP's, your Smurfs, Scooby Doos, or Garfields. So not only are they poor quality films, they're trashing your childhood.
Most reviews for these films have the disclaimer: 'harmless fun for the kids, tedious for adults'. And on the face of it, who cares? They are children, underdeveloped minds who won't realise that these films are woefully sub-par. But why not push the genre, make something that looks decent, has some depth, is actually in love with the medium of cinema. Why not create a child classic? Enter 2014's Paddington.

Great video. I love Wes Andersen and only saw Paddington recently and was struck by the stylistic influence. Going to Paddington 2 this weekend even though I don't have a kid to take because a great film is a great film at any age.
I'm 36 and the Paddington movies make me cry and I'm not ashamed of that fact.
Both Paddington films are a staple in our family!! We are all adults... we watch it when it's raining, when it's on telly, when we are sad... the best films!!
Whem I originally watched Paddington, I was expecting the movie to be another low-effort book adaption to cash in on kids and parents. I was overjoyed to see it was constructed by someone who really seemed to care about the characters and story!
Nacho Libre is the same. Being like a Wes film.
Just visually.
The cinematography is
Paddington & Paddington 2 are bloody beautiful
I never realized how Wes Anderson like Paddington was
How do you only have 188 subscribers? This video was amazing! I touched on Wes Anderson on my review, but I don't do cool video essays like you. Honestly, there aren't many video essays I like. I hate most of them. This was amazing.
Thanks a lot, I'm glad you didn't hate mine.
Thanks for giving ups to Paul King. He's one of my favorite directors
The Grand Budapest Hotel and Paddington 2 looks EXACTLY alike because they're both BASICALLY directed by Wes Anderson
That was lovely, informative, and insightful. I dabbled in video and movie making myself, and I believe that your video was clear and also very enjoyable. Kudos!
just discovered your vid off of my recommendations [from the "isle of dogs" trailer + interviews]
really great stuff man. Subbed and am looking forward to more essays from you in the future.
Love both Paddington 1 & 2
A couple videos back, I mentioned how I felt intimated by the thought of just jumping into a recently released KDrama... Because I felt there was a whole history of cinema I would be skipping over and that the lack of knowledge would keep me from appreciating it fully.
And you just go casually making a video that includes a reference to the kind of list that introduces the topic perfectly. I think the book list is intuitive; there's just some books you might not appreciate fully without having read another, first.
But the British Film list? That's it exactly. Like, EXACTLY what it feels like I need for Korean dramas & romcons & episodic content.
At 50+ I might not have seen EVERY Western-made movie, but I've seen a huge chunk of them (thanks TBS for only airing "classics" on Sunday, when literally nothing else was on the other 3 channels except indoctrination!) or I'm familiar with the impact/influence a film might have had on a writer/director and what the story might have represented in The Grand Canon of filmography. I come with a framework of knowledge - e.g. the typical romcom plot progression but also plot devices, tropes, archetypes, etc. - that I can draw on & really appreciate when I recognize an obvious homage or the barest hat tip... And can rave over when the expected is successfully subverted.
THAT is what I won't have when just picking a KDrama out of the ether, randomly choosing a starting point.
Which has me paralyzed with inaction.
(God, in rereading this I sound like an insufferable movie snob. I just need to get over myself, put a bunch of recs from Army friends into a random generator & let chance do it's thing.)
You're gonna blow up soon, man! This was terrific. I'd love to collaborate sometime.
Thanks, man. It means a lot. Yeah totally, shoot me a message whenever.
@@TrashTheory this aged well
I just watched these two movies for the first time and I’m in love. Great video.
linking Wes Anderson to Paddington is like linking Metropolis with Schindlers List
Great job with this! This caught my eye on Reddit, as I'm a huge Paddington fan and recently made my own video on the film. Keep up the great work!
Hi matt
I would love an essay on agency in films with examples of the importance and unimportant nature in some films. You have quite the knack for narrowing down the focus and theme quickly. I respect your craft and hope you find wide success.
Wes Anderson should honestly direct Paddington 3
He's already made 2 "family" movies
The isle of dogs
stop motion =/= family, a lot of the themes aren’t fit for children
amazing video love the editing, keep up the good work
I really have to see this movie.
2:38 NOOOO DONT REMIND ME OF ELLIOTT AAAAA
Loved the video man! Keep it up!
Couldn't agree more. Classics.
strongly object to the implication that the live-action Scooby-Doo movie isn't a masterpiece
HEY! the Scooby Doo movie was iconic!
How could you include Despicable Me in this? The film has a meaningful concept.
Honestly would have been my favorite Anderson film.
Excellent video. It shows that you took your time with this
Really good video. Keep going
Thank you.
Background music?
Very interesting video!

Really enjoyed this one, keep it up!
Wes Anderson wished he could make a movie as good and deceptively deep as Paddington.
I don't think paddington is a wes anderson movie.
Great video
Boss baby is funny as hell....how dare you
Plz don’t start off review with a negative aim like that, just make that shorter plz. You’re giving us information anyone who is watching this would already know. The start of this video is like “open your eyes” thank you we know
