How did south and north separate and why do the people look different with also different religions?

The North Sudanese are essentially the product of racial admixture between indigenous Sudanese and Arabs that arrived relatively recently; the admixture event took place around 650 AD.
The South Sudanese have no admixture and this is why the two groups look so different.
Sudan separated into two Countries because the admixed Afro-Arabs raided the South for slaves and continuously annexed Lebanon size territories from the South.
The North is Muslim while the South is mostly Christian and this was unfortunately yet another source of hostilities; Islamic fundamentalists in the North attempted to impose Shariah on the entire Country and we simply wouldn't have it.
PS: I'm not saying anything bad about Islam as a religion.

I am so happy how much the living of the people in South Sudan has improved I once held a presentation about climate change and poverty in some states which suffer from famine aswell.
