I bought the Peugeot wagon 6 weeks ago and I absolutely love it. People look at, the exterior and interior design are fantastic, the unusual driving position takes a bit of getting used and the steering wheel is amazing. Never thought I’d ever buy a Peugeot. But with a 5 year unlimited is warranty I had no choice. I was looking at the Mazda as well but it felt too out dated.

I have a 2013 Mazda 6 GT wagon and had a Mazda 3 before. No problems with either car. Peugeot sells so few cars in Australia, a major concern would be spare parts availability.
The Pug is a very nice looking vehicle, and good to see another wagon as an alternative to the ridiculous number of SUV's in the market.

Peugeot 508GT all the way ... I love mine and it's a head-turner and very good drive. Also in regards to the steering position due to the iCockpit design, it's not a problem as all you need to do is adjust the height of the steering and position the seat to your prepared height ... Also, to the point that a wagon is really designed for space and family and not judged to whether it's 2.6 or 1.6 for that matter. I had 4 Mazda's and yes for this, certainly Peugeot 508GT all the way ...

It’s bad enough that the US staunchly ignores the rest of the world, but if Australians are so overexposed to US video product that they’ve become confused as to their nationality, I suggest seeking immediate remedial therapy.

Comprehensive testing indeed. By taking out a measuring tape.
How about testers really put these family vehicles under typical family driving conditions. Try loading them up with luggage and throw 4 to five people in the car and take them for a drive. You'll then discover how the handling, suspension, fuel consumption and engine operate. A punesy 1.4 litre engine with 300Nm isn't going to cut it with me under full load.

For me now passengers and weight is not a huge issue, I am looking for comfort, quiet, fuel efficiency and luxury options, like massaging & heated seats, decent sound system, climate control, adaptive cruise control, etc, etc.
Not many mid sized wagons offer all that in one package these days for this price range.

Aussies need to wake up to themselves and stop buying Korean junk or Japanese cars with their claustrophobic interiors and dated tech, cheap interiors. For the same money you can get a beautiful Pug with brand pedigree, good looks, quality German (Bosch) and BMW/mini shared engines, traditional auto gearbox, functional and high-class interior and a drive that is unrivalled.
