  • Hey Maker. I'm SO excited to get back into the groove of making videos. Did ya miss me?! ;)
In today's video I will show you how I create my own digital cut files and make them laser ready. I'm going to keep it simple today and show you how I do this using an ipad, Procreate, and Lightburn. Be sure to check out the notes below because I may have forgotten a few easy tips ;)
    NOTE
Node editing - at 9:45, if you pull the handle on the left that controls your curve down more, it would make the bottom of your curve perfect. If the handles on the left and right of a node make a straight line, the curve will be perfect.
*Pro tip - use the S to automatically smooth the point.

I'm new to Lightburn and have never touched Procreate, but I've been a draftsman for almost 15 years. In my experience, simplifying and your drawings is the noblest virtue of drafting, and generally not that noticeable in the final product. At least not as noticeable as it should be given how much effort it takes. About 10-20% of the cleanup is critical... the last 80-90% hardly anyone will notice. You know who WILL notice, every time? You.
General vector drawing tip: you can edit nodes for days, seeking perfection. But perfection is MUCH easier to achieve when you start from the shape tools. They're mathematically perfect to start with, unlike our wiggly finger movements. And most vector packages let you hold a modifier key to lock the X & Y proportions together, to make perfect squares, circles, even polygons, etc.

Thank you for sharing this. I have procreate but kinda gave up lol. This encouraged me to try again. I really want to design files but I cannot draw for the life of me 😂

When doing simple curves just delete all nodes between end points and reshape with handles. Also use the make nodes smoth feature to get rid of the crooked nodes like at the very bottom. Atleast this is what I do.

This is pretty cool, I have really been wanting Procreate to design stuff but didn't know if it was worth it and I didn't know if I could create svgs with it, so I wonder, if I can do the same thing you did except with Inkscape? do you know if thats possible? Thank you for this video.

Hey. I am wanting to start making tiered tray svgs to sell that customers with lasers can use. Could you please do a tutorial on how to do this? Would I draw each image for each piece on the same canvas on procreate?

Hello!! Question about the nodes - what is the purpose of cleaning them up? You mentioned they are stop points for your laser, but if you hadn't cleaned up the nodes, what would be the difference? Does it take longer to cut or ..? Thanks!

    • @sassymouth2056
      @sassymouth2056 Před rokem

Gives a cleaner final look. Think of it like cutting cloth with scissors - the fewer start/stops the smoother the cut will look.

Thats pretty awesome. How has support been on your laser, would you still choose the same unit? That particular model appear to me to be the only printer to offer a reasonably sized bed and wattage in a compact form.

At 6:05, when you highlight your engrave area with C02 (red), it actually filled the area with the red color - like a flood fill. My LB is not doing that. What am I missing in the settings? (fyi, I have not updated to the 0.9.24 version)

    Hi “mom” 😉 …. I love you’re videos and learn a lot
I also did buy Procreate and still have a lot to learn but I’m loving it so far 👍🏽.
I have a question…. I did make a simple shape with 3 layers and did export these layers in png format. And did trace them in lightburn but I can not fill the shape in lightburn.
Do you have any idea what I did wrong?
    Greetings from Holland 🇱🇺

I feel like you should have skipped procreate because you redid all that stuff anyway and you should have used Adobe Illustrator to begin with. I also would have like to have seen the end result being cut.

Sorry about that. I intentionally wanted to keep the design simple for this and just demonstrate how I've done it before investing in a software like Ai. You can catch the full tutorial this Monday when it airs live during the Summer Creative Retreat workshop. Just head on over to my site at www.thatmomwithalaser.co and register to get the notifications. It's free. :)

Are you just emailing yourself the image?
Ive been working with Corel for years and wanted to try procreate on my iPad but its sooo annoying to send the images to my computer… its an added step that is making it actually less easy :(
