It is 1942 and the German submarine fleet is heavily engaged in the so called "Battle of the Atlantic" to harass and destroy English shipping. With better escorts of the Destroyer Class, however, German U-Boats have begun to take heavy losses. "Das Boot" is the story of one such U-Boat crew, with the film examining how these submariners maintained their professionalism as soldiers, attempted to accomplish impossible missions, while all the time attempting to understand and obey the ideology of the government under which they served.

Awesome film. Never gets old. RIP Wolfgang Petersen.
One of the best war movies: like The Platoon, Apokalypse Now, 9th Batalion.
Stands the test of time for sure.
Dambusters, Battle of Britain

Ice cold in Alex, the desert rats, the colditz story, waterloo. Classics
In a way it is incidental because the movie was based on Buchheim's book: But for a movie it is just genius to have the rookie war correspondent character aboard since it provides an organic opportunity to explain concepts (e.g. wolf pack tactics) to that character and thus, the audience.
Buchheim was the rookie correspondent himself.
A lot of films do this so it is easier for the audience to understand as the rookie character has most of the stuff explained to them.
It's like the role of Maturin in the Jack Aubrey series...
Yeah but there is still a big difference between the correspondent in the movie and Buchheim himself as a character of his novel. They made the correspondent more newbish to use the technique you mentioned. It's well done that way.
It is called "fish out of water" character.
It is uncommon in my opinion to see a film as popular as this and be so accurate to real life. This film is at least 98% to real life.
The book author himself said that the only thing unrealistic in the movie is that the sailors act too emotionally (you know, Germans).
They were some tuff men and they is putting it lightly.
Jurgen Prochnow was an inspired casting as the captain , made this film totally memorable, enemies or not these submariners were very brave men, they suffered horrendous losses 😢😢.
They originally wanted to use someone else since Prochnow was seen as too old, but then used him anyways since the u boat commanders usually looked a lot older becuae of the immense stress.
Jurgen Prochnow spent years trying to get the film produced after reading the book.
@@yourfriendlyneighborhoodf1802Indeed, officers in WW2 were usually surprisingly young.
As an ex diesel boat man I can empathise with the crew, God knows how they had the courage to go out to sea time after time.
How did they refuel?
@@sagatuppercut2960there were access points where they would connect fuel lines when they were in port. The Type XIV "Milchkuh" could also refill them while at sea.
One of the best war movies ever but you must see it in German to get the full effect.
The subtitles are a bit of a problem, all the subs I've seen so far are terrible and inacurrate...
@@bojanivanisevic1072 There are some translation issues true but the intensity and desperation of the crew really doesn't come through as well in dubbed English.
@@alexfromboston8303 Agreed, I prefer to watch movies with subs, even if they're not super accurate since synchronized movies totally kill the vibe. To be fair, there's just loads of Umgangssprache and other stuff that gets lost in translation in Das Boot. I don't know if it's even translatable to a satisfying degree, I still think they could've done a better job.
@@bojanivanisevic1072
You prefer to watch movies with subs... With subtitles or submarines? ;-)
As a German speaker, many movies with English-speaking subtitles of German dialog irks me a bit. You git the gist of the meaning, but miss the nuances of the correct translation.
1:41 around this time it sounds like the engine is flaring in beat with the music, not sure if this was intentional, probably not, but it's a very beautiful moment
It's look aesthetic and there many aesthetic scene in this movie, I love it
Wouldn't doubt if it was intentional, also you can notice the trumpets flaring on beat with the flames as Johann opens the valves ;)
"Dast ist Thompsen!" 75%+ for U-Boat crews...damn. The scene where the Kaptian is yelling while breaking through the blockades, and sky is raining shells, is awesome too!
It will take another 50 years before someone can make another U boat movie like this.
The problem with modern u boat / war movies in general is they overuse CGI so everything just looks and feels fake
That one will be the us vs China
Maybe not, disaster movie is waiting when Australia gets its nuclear boats😅.
@@freeagent8225 We will all be dead with old age before they are ready
Today's actors guilds would never allow a movie made like this. These actors here were standing on big models moved around by hydraulics, and the water isn't production assistants throwing buckets of water, it's a machine capable of throwing a whole ton of water at once. There were several accidents during filming, for example one time an actor got washed off the thing - because some safety harness snapped.
The movie is a good candidate for a "production hell" kind of documentary. 😂
beautiful model submarine work in this movie...it looks quite real
the use of the music - just truly conveys the emotion of the crew - such an amazing movie
There will be only one"DAS BOOT" and not some fake remakes!
I could not agree more ...
They could have at least named the reboot something more clever like:
"Das ReBoot!"
wait, there are reboots?
Bester deutscher Kino Film und Serie ever

Hats off to the camera man @0:27.
Gotta be tough moving from compartment to compartment and then doing it backwards carrying gear and keeping it pointed properly!
This Shot was actually his Idea. He said that he wants a shot going through the whole Boat so you get a better Feeling of how tight and cramped it is.
Jost Vacano. Story goes that Hollywood execs first thought of his shots being some kind of special effect. This production was on a completely different level compared to other german stuff of the time. and tbh - it still is.
@@Killian.Hardegenit was the peak of German filmmaking. It’s like the German version of Britains Battle of Britain film.
I agree, even more so the cameraman at 1.59. To keep the camera stabilized and pointed whilst swimming alongside the boat is phenomenal.
@@Killian.Hardegen The Iron Cross is another good film from the german's perspective.
Notice how close the engineers had to work with the exposed pistons. One wrong move or shift of the boat and there go a few fingers.
Rocker arms.
Fun fact: the future Admiral Chester Nimitz of the US Pacific Fleet lost half a finger to a diesel engine in the 1920s as a young officer aboard a submarine. The only reason he didn't lose his whole finger was the piston jammed on his Annapolis ring.
I found my DVD the other day... I want my kids to see this masterpiece !
You áre exemplary parents....this film reminds me of some Hollywood classics when I was growing up, which made you feel like you heard a moral message, after leaving the theater.
This is how you do a movie: real story, good music, convincing camerawork, no CGI, no cliches, no PC bulshit.
As a sailor and a submariner, I agree with the captain.
That's not a "captain". He's a Kaleun ;)
@@vindicator05 Kapitänleutnant. There, Kapitän is in his title. Literally Captain Lieutenant, but he is "captain" of his boat, meaning the one in command.
Captain is the right rank.
What submarine did you serve on? I was in the U.S. Submarine Force on SAN FRANCISCO.
The hum of the diesels! Pure music.
I’m English and have always been fascinated by uboats, I’ve played every uboat game possible over the years.
what s your favorite one?
der beste film aller Zeiten das hat echt den Namen Das U-Boot verdient !!! .👍👍👍👍👍👏👏Nicht die, am Amerikanische Version das hat nix mit U-Boot !! 😥😥😥
Welche Version meinst du? Die Serie die gerade läuft?
I agree, it’s a fantastic film and nothing else has ever matched it.
Der Film hat aber gar nicht den Namen „Das U-Boot“ …. 😅
The Grey Wolves..Karl Doenitz
.
I think the uboats could do 18 - 21 knots on the surface depending on weather.
The convoys could not go faster then the slowest ship .... maybe as slow as 10 knots or worse. Big ocean liners when alone could do say maybe 30 knots or maybe more so those were a hard catch.
Today the last man of the U96 (inspiration for the film) died of the age of 107
Crew on bridge arranged like figures in a Renaissance painting
The German U Boats suffered nearly 68% losses during World War II 785 or 793 out of 1,162. The crew was small only 35/36 men per U Boat but many ended up at the bottom of the Ocean.
Even Kamikaze pilots had better chances because oftentimes their missions were aborted.
Once a sub had fired a torpedo, it was easy prey.
Especially after the British engineered ASDIC and shortwave radar and the hedgehog was built (may have been US) and the Leigh lights.
A fellow in the model boat club I belonged to was a submariner. He built a beautiful working model of his U-boat.
The day before it was to sail, he went into hospital with a bad appendix and missed the sailing. The boat never returned.

This is The version I was dreaming about. German with fixed video. I have bought tv version, but it does not look nor sound as good as this :)

@@Komazur The English overdub, by nearly the entire principal cast (Jürgen Prochnow, Herbert Grönemeyer etc) who can actually speak English, is nothing to be scoffed at however. But it is best in original German.

Uno de los más brillantes film sobre el coraje y el heroísmo en el contexto de la ironía y el absurdo de la guerra. Excelente!!
Seeing this isolated scene with the pounding action music, I can see the original book's author's complaints about the miniseries/movie glamorizing war
the gathering u boat pack the thrill of the chase the sitting duck merchantmen its all in this one scene masterful
And that underwater music.....Jaws was great ...but here..music is...soo....
Remember being the topside watch several times going out to sea from Scotland. That was some cold water.
This is by far the best part of the movie
42 years later I am still trying to find that 1982 Das Boot pinball machine.

One of the best films ever made. BUT I would love it if they remade the END, with the crew being accorded a heroes welcome home instead of being peppered with bullets from a cowardly enemy PLANE.
I think this ending is perfect. It shows what could happen.
The life expectancy of Germans sailors on a Uboat was quite short. This is a fitting end to the film.
